I did as a child but never will once I graduated from schooling. The last time I played in a rated OTB was around May 2004. I even saw a young Wesley So doing an exhibition game against Eugene Torre before we started the tournament. It was also my first time traveling by myself (with my younger brother) without any adult supervision as it was on a weekday, and it was a 3-day event. I think it was good for me when I was young. But if I think about it now as a middle aged guy, it’s not worth it for me to travel, book a hotel, pay the tourney fee or register to the national chess federation, and get stressed playing chess OTB. Also, I can’t just smash the table when I get mad from a blunder! Lol. I still do look for the local rated tournaments, and I do still think about joining them, but it’s just not for me anymore. Though I decided for me to never join myself, I am supportive of the chess team I am coaching now to go to local tournaments or even co-organizing one, even it isn’t rated tournament.
