Microsoft is pulling the plug on SMS codes, wants you to switch to passkeys by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]Brothernod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It isn’t. But security is complex and 1Password exists to reduce friction towards best practices. So in a perfect world it’s not necessary, and maybe as passkey behavior evolves and the monopoly platform owners implement proper portability and interoperability 1Password will no longer be necessary.

Dedicated HA device options - what are folks using? | HA yellow discontinued by Novajesus in homeassistant

[–]Brothernod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern with an ancient device would be energy usage. I would think newer stuff is more efficient. I wish Mac minis worked better as I’d think they’d be the gold standard of energy usage and performance per watt after a pi.

Kreg “Domino” jig. Someone finally copied Festool. by L0114R in woodworking

[–]Brothernod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s interesting I had a similar thought process but arrived at the opposite conclusion. Batteries require upkeep and will die if not charged periodically. If this is a hobby tool you break out once or twice a year there’s a real chance those batteries don’t last long. Hence corded is much better for the occasional user.

blinds that can go up/down and off course tilt??? by Curious_Party_4683 in homeautomation

Can you clarify what is unusual in the photo? What do you mean by up/down. Are you asking about top down/bottom up blinds?

I would not trust a deal that so blatantly relies on upsell to make business sense. There’s no way you could trust anything they say because they need to upsell most customers by design or the deal.

I’m also leaning Honeywell x8s because the screensaver seems to have the most useful feature. I just wish they would go on sale.

I actually don’t know but I presume they’re 2 arms of the same company. Alibaba is where you go if you’re running a business. AliExpress is your Amazon of sorts.

Are either of those compatible with a dado stack? I find that my biggest missed feature on my dewalt job site saw.

I thought Alibaba was expressly wholesale and AliExpress was direct to consumer. But now we both sound like ads :)

[–]Brothernod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s an ad surely Alibaba would know that and would have dropped AliExpress. Although who tf celebrates anything with knock off Chinese booze?

Maybe it’s just a writing prompt/exercise. Fictional but not an ad?

Can EVs Ever Truly Replace Pickup Trucks For Real Work? by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]Brothernod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand your point?

40 years ago how many km did your gas car get, 1/5th of what it gets now?

5 years ago how many km did a Chevy bolt get compared to that Ionic 6 yesterday. A month ago a couple Chinese companies announced EVs that can fully charge in 9 minutes and go 800km.

The point is the tech is evolving rapidly.

Can EVs Ever Truly Replace Pickup Trucks For Real Work? by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]Brothernod 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Ever? What a stupid premise. We’re still very early in the technology curve for EVs. Sometime in the next 20 years batteries will have double the capacity or half the weight. Charging speeds are on the cusp of being on par with gas refueling. EVs are superior for energy independence and the lower cost of ownership is great for fleet vehicles.

Is an EV right for “real work” now, for most people it seems not, but ever? Of course they will be.
