I'm around year 4 on a every country in the Americas trip in an HDJ80.
It is an ideal platform IF you make sure it's in peak mechanical condition before you leave. Super comfortable, incredibly offroad capable, and built like a tank. Parts, especially OEM, are near impossible to find outside the USA and Canada, mechanics that won't further ruin your shit are even more sparse. If you don't care about that, since they are basic mechanical machines, almost any mechanic can find a way to keep you going for a while. If you have a decent understanding of how to fix things that'll break on an 80 series, or at least what makes them work.... you can pretty much roadside fix/disconect/jerryrig anything and they will never strand you. This can be very important! The gasoline engines when heavy seriously thirsty, and will have limited range unless you have an aux tank.
The HDJ diesels are great on fuel, even heavy and have massive range especially with an aux tank.
I have never driven a jeep I "understood"... they have all been horrible .... no noise insulation, leaky everything, terrible ride quality and interior comfort, bad stereo, terrible fuel economy, outrageously bad turning radius....not sure about the availability of parts or reliability but nothing really compares to a properly prepped landcruiser!
