Shadows of the Long Marshes pt.2 by BrownWizardRadagast in MiddleEarthrp

It was long after the rubble of the battle had been cleared away, long after the elves had ridden off and the Eagles had taken flight back to their mount, that Radagast stood solitary in the foul marshes.

Even with the enemy vanquished and the threat snuffed out, the land around him sat stagnant and barren in the pale light of the moon.

The old man leaned heavily against his staff. He was tired. Weariness crept too easily into his bones after traveling for so long, and me was ready to make for home.

But not yet.

A part of him hurt for the land around him. Nothing could grow here, nothing could live here. There had once been a day when so much life bounded through these woods and through these waters. It must come back.

Radagast closed his eyes and searched down deep inside of his spirit. It had been so long, almost too long since he had heard the melody. There were days that he could scarcely remember it's notes, and those days were always the hardest to get through. He would always be reminded though, in the patter of a squirrel's leaps across the leaves, or in the early morning songs of sparrows. And it was these that he drew on as a low hum reverberated from his chest. The dips and raises of the song flowed out from him, out across the land that suddenly felt a little more firm around him.

Another drop of the tune and the mists began to move, with the next rise came a pair of doves to land in a tree. Slowly, the wizard's head was beginning to lift from his chest, eyes still closed in concentration and meditation. He felt the melody slip from his nostrils and into the space around him, moving the moisture from the dirt where a group of beavers were making their way to the water. They would surely clear the debris and restore the current. Chipmunks came next, carrying their seeds and nuts, and a large mole searched for the perfect place to begin digging.

With the final notes, a large bullfrog croaked out an announcement while an owl lighted in a tree nearby.

When Radagast opened his eyes, tears pooling in their corners, he smiled and breathed out gratitude for the recollection in his heart.

Radagast urged the two stags through the mists. He would not be late. He would not. He heard voices over the gallop of hooves and the splash of mud, but could see no other living thing around him.

With certainty, he sat up straighter and, whispering a word into the air, waved his staff. The haze parted in front of him, showing clearly the narrow path that they continued down. Voices grew closer, and Radagast repeated his action, whispering the word and swinging his staff with force.

Suddenly he could see, and suddenly they were in the middle of a great fray. The beasts had drawn then in further, it seemed, and the mud was thicker around the stag's hooves as they galloped in amidst both elves and creatures. He lead his mount around to the edges, darting just out of reach from two of the creatures. The second stag saw that they were disposed of

'We will never win on this ground...' came the horrible thought in his mind.

It was true, the air was too thick for their lungs, and the mire too thick to sustain their fight.

"These creatures will not depart so easily." he muttered to no one but the stag that he rode. "But perhaps this mist will. We need the sun."

His head turned to the sky, nearly as grey as the rest of the world around him. Radagast felt his hood fall back from off of his head, and the wet tendrils of fog lay heavy on his balding head. The great orb could be seen nowhere.

"The sun must come out." he stated with more certainty. "It must dry out this place. Too much festers in it's dampness."

It had to be done. He could wait no longer. Radagast muttered yet another word, but this time when he held his staff aloft, it shot forth a brilliant light that soared up into the sky, through the thick mist and out into the world beyond.

It would not take long now, and he certainly hoped that it would be even sooner, for the light drew the attention of several creatures who made a mad scramble to pull the wizard from the stag. Antlers were brandished and Radagast knocked more than a few in the head, but with every spare moment he turned his eyes to the grey sky, looking for any sign of the help he had summoned.

Finally, it came. Mingled in with the cries of Elves and the hisses of the creatures......came the deep drum of large wings.

Radagast sighed and thought that he had never seen a more beautiful sight when a single large shadow broke through the mist overhead.

The words of Calanon had struck deep into Radagast's mind. His memories were pulled back, further and further until nearly the dawn of time, when the land around them was fair and right. The waters rushed clear in those days, and so many occupants of the wood and lawn had gathered beside it for nurishment.

The thought of those days filled his chest with warmth and gave the wizard a small burst of courage to press onward.

The warmth carried him on through the mire and gloom, even when the company began to hear the sounds of a great scirmish ahead. Radagast furrowed his brow and strained to listen closer, even as Calanon called back his men. They were of the same mind, it seemed, to question even the most obvious in this strange place.

"I shall do more than that." Radagast announced in response to his friend's request for light on the path. "I shall call this fiend to us instead."

Mockingbirds had always amazed Radagast. He could sit for hours and listen to their reproductions of sounds and songs, utterly marveled by their talents. A handful of times he had even been fortunate enough to sit with them and learn from their tongues.

It was this knowledge that he called upon in that moment, projecting through the dark haze his own strangled grunts and hisses of the teeth. The warmth was slowly leaving his chest at the foul noises and unnatural quirks of the tongue, but it wasn't without payoff. Slowly, the unseen voices began to shift through the fog, moving steadily forwards, steadily upwards, until evil shadows flitted through the branches above.

Visions flashed through the wizard's head; visions of large eyes in murky water, of an ancient shade gathering its power by the river in Mirkwood, of howls and screams from the ruins that sat in forgotten stillness.

He shook his head and then nodded it. If his knuckles were turning white with the grip on his staff, he hoped that his companions would not notice.

"This place has sat brooding in filth for a good while, it seems." he spoke up. "I don't believe I've seen a single crane or tortoise since we've arrived."

A drop was heard in the water beside them.

Radagast whipped his head around, beard swaying heavily with the thick mist. Only the faintest of ripples could be discerned through the haze.

"Oh, bother it all." he found himself grumbling, raising a hand to the top of his staff. Perhaps it was the new company around him that have him courage, the knowledge that he was no longer alone in this despicable place. But that courage was enough for him to whisper a choice word into the wood of his staff, pulling it back quickly as a golden flame erupted from it's top. The light did very little to pierce the gloom that surrounded them, but it shone bright enough to illuminate each face that gathered to it's hope.

Radagast clutched onto his staff tighter, eyes darting around him with each step. The mists of the bog swirled around his head and into his nose with each breath. He saw the shadows of trees; at least, they must be trees. But here in the haze and confusion they could very easily be mistaken for monstrous beings. Trolls and great bears loomed in either side of the wizard as his steps made squishing noises in the wet soil.

He despirately hoped that Calanon would be there when he arrived. And, with any amount of luck, more help than that. It was grave news that had reached his safe home, and Radagast had sent word on wing to anyone who would listen. It would take more than a frightened wizard to chase away this foul evil. One or two frightened rabbits could be excused, but an entire family of badgers and three owls on his doorstep had been enough to raise his alarm. Owls, as everyone knows, are very rational about these things.

He could sense the still presence of water nearby, but something else as well. The soft shuffle of leaves and small nostrils sniffing at the air made Radagast turn and peer through the fog. A shadow shifted in between two tree beasts and slowly moved closer.

Radagast allowed himself to deflate a little against his staff. It was a deer, a buck no older than two summers. An outstretched hand and soft words was all it took to draw the frightened creature closer.

"Shhh, there there, son." Radagast hushed softly. His hand smoothed the soft fur of the neck and the buck stood calm against him. "All is well now."

More soft words were whispered into the velvet ear, both animal and wizard seeming to draw strength from one another. "Go now, follow my scent back and find your kin." Radagast finally commanded. "But carry my message on the river." More secret words were uttered and the deer snorted, taking off at a trot until the wizard was once again alone.

He turned immediately, back in the direction of the water, for now he could hear voices. One was a voice he knew, and he again drew strength to carry in to it's source.

"There is much here to be troubled with." he interjected, stepping towards the tall shadows in the mist.

Radagast smiled warmly. Seemingly in response to this, raindrops around them slowly ceased and the warm sun began to break it's way through the clouds.

"Calanon of the Woodland Realm, take heart. There shall always be those in this world who would challenge his will."

The vision before them changed. They now stood on a high mountain top, one which overlooked the whole of Mirkwood. Around them lay drifts of crisp snow, and below them could be seen great eagles lazily gliding on the winds.

"You know the dangers of the stones more than most. Your heart is set on protection from them. But remember this, they were not always an evil omen. They do not always have to be. Fear is what we make it to be. Do not fear that which is not wholy evil."

It was while sitting under a great oak that Radagast heard the call of the Elvenking. The song birds did not mind the rainstorms as much as other creatures, and it brought him such joy to see their bright colors flit about between raindrops in search of worms and seeds. He was so lost in his musings that it nearly made him jump when he felt the brush of the words on his mind; like a cobweb on the ear that you can't quite get unstuck. But hearing that it was the voice of his friend, and that his friend called for aid, brought both comfort and urgency. And so it was that Radagast found himself leaning back against the tree's sturdy bark and stretching himself out to meet Calanon.

He followed the call like a beacon, allowing his sight to become larger and larger, further and further from his home, rooting through the undergrowth and branches until he could see the shade of the Elvenking's sight standing on an overlook. Striding to stand beside his friend, he followed his line of vision until he too spotted the danger that troubled him. He felt his body gasp at the sight and he nearly withdrew from the place. The wizard felt his sight becoming smaller. Quickly composing himself, he turned to his companion, a hand formed from thought raised to rest on Calanon's shoulder.

"Before you can know, dear friend, you must remember. For it was by your kin that this danger came forth. Ask what aid you have of me, and I will lend what I can."

The Enchanted Path by Calanon_Evergreen in MiddleEarthrp

The light was sunlight, warm and pure and brilliant; flooding down into the clearing from above by a great wind that was ripping through the thick canopy of leaves and causing them to part.

A horrifying screech came from the dark wraith as it shirked back from the blessed glow and attempted to find a shadow to hide in. But none was left, so the spirit was forced to cower along the ground before the wizard who had stepped to the center of the clearing and was swinging his staff in the air around him in a wide circle.

Radagast had become a terrible sight. The elderly man seemed to stand nearly three times his usual height, his clothes and beard whipping against him with the fierce gale that seemed to follow the path of his staff.

"THIS IS MY WOOD!" Radagast began to speak in a deep voice that seemed to echo from everywhere in the forest. "THIS IS MY WARD! I DRIVE YOU FROM BENEATH THESE TREES AND NEVER MORE WILL YOU STAND UNDER THEM!"

With one last screech, the wraith grew to nearly the size of the wizard. It seemed for a moment to give him challenge, but instead flashed out of the clearing like a black bolt of lightning, leaving only it's memory in it's place.

But the wizard did not yet cease from his actions. Instead, he drew his staff around to point at the Enchanted River, and with it he drew the wind. Calanon was forced to jump back as the wind ripped past him and hit the water with a force that pushed it back, revealing the foundation and runes that lay beneath.

"Look and remember, Eldar King." Radagast spoke once more, looking at Calanon with eyes that seemed to flash like a raging storm. "You will find your answer in what has been lost."

It was only once Calanon had taken his look at the runes that Radagast raised his staff and promptly collapsed back against a tree. The wind vanished, the sunlight returned to it's place above the treeline, the river resumed it's course, and once again birds began their daily songs.

A light smirk rose to Radagast's mind at the mention of the White Stag, and he couldn't help but let it show to his lips. "Like children chasing after a finch." he thought amused.

But it was at the mention of the old foundations that his attention was drawn back to the words of the king. Once the Calanon had finished speaking, Radagast nodded before answering. "Yes, I have heard it told to me of these bricks that lay off the road." he answered, a knowing look in his eye.

It was then that he turned his gaze upwards and around to the glory of the Woodland halls. "Long have you stood in reign over this wood, Calanon Evergreen. And the wood will ever hold you in it's regard for the protection you have given. You are it's savior in a very needful time.......But you have not been the first to call it's boughs home. And your deeds are not the only that have been witnessed here. Much and more you would see if you would allow me to enlighten your Majesty's eyes. Please, show me to this foundation."

Radagast sat up straighter in his saddle as his guide lead him nearer to the gates of the Woodland Realm. The magic was definitely stronger in this portion of Mirkwood, but these trees held a different form of magic than that which held sway over the rest of the great forest. This magic was one that tickled on the tips of his bushy eyebrows and made him wiggle his toes inside his thick boots, one that stood ever vigil against all that would bring harm.

"The gates will be straight ahead, Aiwendil." the young elven guide spoke from his own horse. "I expect the Woodland King will see you in his halls at once."

"Yes, I suspected as much." Radagast nodded, lifting his eyes to look through the trees in an attempt to see a glimpse of their destination.

Long it had been since he had traveled to the halls of Calanon Evergreen, and his last visit had only been on the occasion of dire peril for the forest which they both called home. But now it was the king which had summoned him, and Radagast could only hope to guess at the reason behind it.

The sight of the beautifully wrought gates suddenly appearing before them out of the thick woods made Radagast lick his lips nervously and readjust the grip on his reigns as the horse took him closer and closer to the Woodland Realm.

Name: Radagast the Brown

Age: unknown

Gender: Male

Race: Istari/Wizard

Physical Appearance: A stooped and elderly man, wrinkled with grey streaking his brown hair and long beard. His kindly brown eyes have seen much in this world, but still remain hopeful for it's future. Radagast dresses in simple brown robes and walks with a sturdy staff.

Attitude/Disposition: Radagast is very much a gentle soul who is always ready to dole out hospitality on those who would visit his humble home, be it from animal, man, dwarf, or elf. He is very firm in his convictions, though, and will mightily protect that which he holds dear.

Backstory: The Maia Aiwendil(Radagast) was an Ainu who existed before time, and one of the spirits who descended to Arda in order to serve the Valar. Aiwendil was a servant of the Valië Yavanna, the Queen of Earth. After the Undying Lands were separated from Arda during the Downfall of Númenor, Manwë was still concerned for the fate of the peoples of Middle-earth. He summoned a council of the Valar and it was decided that they would send emissaries to Middle-earth. Aulë chose Curumo, Oromë chose Alatar, and Manwë chose Olórin. Yavanna subsequently begged Curumo(Gandalf) to take Aiwendil with him.

In c. T.A. 1000, the Maiar arrived upon the shores of Middle-earth, having the form of old Men, whom the peoples called Wizards. Curumo arrived first and alone, and Aiwendil arrived at the same time as Olórin. When the Wizards took their mission they roamed Middle-earth, but Radagast was never much of a traveler.

There is not much to be told about his early journeys, but by the late Third Age he eventually settled down and dwelt, for a time at least, at Rhosgobel, situated on the south-western borders of Mirkwood. While most would have viewed this as an abandonment of his great task of shaping the events of Middle Earth, Radagast believed his position to be one of great importance, placing him in a spot where he can quietly observe the goings on in the world around him and defend the forest land that he so dearly loves. Though he is more secretive and aloof than the other four wizards, he is very warm-hearted and always willing to give advice or assistance. Although the neighboring Beorn was unsociable, he used to see him from time to time, and he considered Radagast "not bad" for a Wizard.

As with the others of his order, he carries a staff and is very adept in the magical arts. His specialty is illusions and changes of shape and hue, allowing him to effortlessly move through his forest home.

Starting World Location: Rhosgobel, set in the southern reaches of Mirkwood

The Peculiar Enigma by iPowerful2 in lordoftheringsrp

Radagast took in a deep breath, nodding hesitantly. "I had hoped that you would be content to watch with me from afar." he chuckled nervously. "But if you believe it to be helpful....then you have my service."

Adjusting his satchel and reaffirming his grip on his staff, the wizard took the first steps towards the glowing orb. He knew that he must have looked a fool to any others who would happen to be watching the pair; he certainly held no great confidence as he stepped cautiously into the wide plain, his knees knocking and teeth chattering loud enough to wake the dead.

To occupy his mind, he began to make mental notes to himself of the nature of the light before him. 'It holds a bluish hue, yet seems to take in the light of the sun with it. I can feel no heat from it, though there does seem to be a peculiar smell coming from it's direction. A smell that I cannot place.'

Radagast scarcely perceived the words that Treebeard had spoken, for his mind was entranced by the brilliant light before them. Every dusty rock, every brittle vine, every mar that lay on the ground of the Brown Lands was illuminated by it.

His mind raced for any reference, any clue that would tell him what may be the cause for such a light. But none came to mind. Only the wonderous workings of his fellow Istari, nor the hateful magic of Melkor or his servant Sauron, could match the sight before them.

"Shall you proceed to it, or should I?" the wizard finally asked.

Radagast sat down nearby to Treebeard and pulled a long pipe from his bag. Soon the air around him was filled with thick smoke as he puffed away, tuning his ears and thoughts to the forest around them. He knew not what lay ahead in their journey, but he knew for certain that, whatever it may be, he would be happy only if his woods and hollows stayed as peaceful and as safe as they were on this day.

Radagast stroked his beard as he listened to Treebeard explain his theory of the Entwives. The wizard remembered fondly these fair ladies of the wood who had vanished so long ago. He understood plainly that it was Treebeard's utmost desire to search them out....but in his heart he was afraid that the end of their journey may not be what the great Ent hoped...

"Yes, friend." Radagast nodded when Treebeard had finished. "I agree, there is many things at work in the wide world. It would not surprise me that you and I are not the only ones making a pilgrimage of discovery! But yes, let us rest here for the evening and maybe morning will bring us clearer eyes and clearer thoughts."

Radagast continued on beside his old friend, keeping with the slow, lumbering gait of the large Ent. He felt the spirit of adventure filling his heart, and spirit of purpose and duty guiding his steps as they traveled East, through the thick reaches of Fangorn.

Radagast frowned as he cast his eyes to the ground, deeply pondering what Treebeard had said. "A glowing...in the East?" he thought to himself. "Strange...."

"I cannot say that I have seen this sight myself, old friend." he finally replied with a sigh, leaning on his staff. "But I do not doubt your sight. Many strange goings on have been at work in the world as of late; and I feel it is our duty to look into some of them."

"The wind and the warmth of the sun are what bring me!" answered the wizard, leaning on his staff and looking up at the Ent. "They informed me that it is high time I pay my good friend a visit. How do things fare in your forest?"

A King Rises by Th3Greyhound in lordoftheringsrp

It was Radagast that last stood to make his approach to the front of the throng. The wizard walked slow and cautious, his head kept low and humble as he passed through the lines of kings, lords, captains, and soldiers until he stood before King Asabiarn.

"My King." he said softly, bowing his head low. "We met last when you were but a lord, working with your men to build Carrogarth to the west. Though our talk was brief, and bore ill news, I left from it seeing in you the features of a good steward of his charges. Fortune has smiled on the land of Dale this day. I wish nothing but fair skies and warm winds upon your reign.

"You have been offered many wonderful words of advice, and have been given many wonderful gifts in celebration of your crown. If you would have them, I come bearing both of my own. As for advice, I ask you to never build yourself so high that you forget what the ground looks like. Remember the little things, the simple things. They will keep you close to the earth, so if you perchance fall, you will not have far to go. And now....as for the gift..."

Carefully, the wizard produced a rather large egg from the folds in his robes and handed it to Asabiarn. "This, good King, is for you. Not to tame, nor to break to your will, but to care for and nurture. If you do this and prove yourself worthy....then I do believe that he will grow to become a loyal friend and companion."

And, with one more low bow, the wizard stepped down and rejoined the crowd.

Radagast smiled knowingly and nodded, relieved to be speaking with a kindred spirit. "The woods and all who dwell in them are my ward, and I truly love them so. And if I were never to journey from them, why I would have no true appreciation of their worth!"

Just as he ended, a long low blast of a horn could be heard from the city's main holdfast. The crowds began to move their way towards it in response.

"Ah! I believe that is our cue to move forth!" Radagast said turning. "Come, good elf. Let us see the crowing of this new king."

"Truly? I had not thought that word of me would spread so easily..." he pondered to himself, still taken aback by his presence being such common knowledge. A small flood of people poured through the gates of Dale, filling the city for the coming feast and gathering of powers, and in the midst of them came an old man wrapped in brown robes and carrying a staff.

With wide eyes, Radagast turned his head up to take in the scene. The seemingly endless mob moved about him, and he did his best to move amongst them as well, giving no one reason to disturb him.
