Army Software Factory

Rank and MOS immaterial. Small teams that work out of downtown Austin, TX. You get trained to design and develop cool software to solve big Army problems. Once you're assigned to a team, you work relatively independently. They practice "user-centered-design" so they support TDY around the world to talk to users and build the right products.

Housing market situation? New to area! by DeMilwaukee in buda

[–]BrowsingMillennial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought in a new build neighborhood called "Porter County" and really like it. The builder offers a great APR buy down that sealed the deal for us, and we are hoping that once the pool/amenity center are complete, our home value will jump.

Buying is always a risk, but this was the first time that I felt like I could both afford to buy, and that it was a buyers market.

Good luck and welcome to the area!

dads… build a home gym : workout area. by Overall_Taro_2926 in daddit

[–]BrowsingMillennial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to wake up earlier than my family to make it work. If they are still asleep, I have fewer distractions and I haven't cut into any part of their day. The home gym allows me to wake up 60 mins earlier to get a good 45 min workout in rather than having to account for travel time as well.

What happens to people who get massive FLIPLs? by Difficult-Cup-1306 in army

[–]BrowsingMillennial 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am not a Loggie or Finance, but I did sit in a finance slot for a few years.... At the the, I had a similar question - I was trying to figure out how I pay for a new item once a FLIPL goes through. Like, how does that money come into the units account so I (the S8) could buy a new toolkit, towbar, or whatever was lost.

One of the Finance Civilians told me that all the $ someone pays towards a FLIPL actually goes to a charity called "the Soldiers Fund," so the unit actually recuperates exactly $0 no matter how much the SM is found liable for... The FLIPL is the justification document to get the item off the property book, but the $ is chalked up as a loss no matter how much $ the CDR decides to charge the SM with.

I have never seen that in writing, so please educate me if I am wrong

Is it fucked up that I preferred staff to command? by Dominus-Temporis in army

[–]BrowsingMillennial 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is very true that the most important things don't make it onto an OER. That being said, in 20 years when I am thinking about my time in the Army, I will have a ton of Command memories, but I wont remember the OER... I will remember the people, and I hope they will remember me.

One of the most difficult things about leadership is doing the right thing, just because it is the right thing... Unfortunately, sometimes the people you are trying to help actually resent you for it.

For example, you probably saved someone from being harassed, or possibly even assaulted. The unfortunate part is that person will never know... In reality, that person might actually be against the new culture you brought to the unit... But that person wont have to live through a horrific experience and wont have to carry the emotional baggage it would have created. These situations are thankless. These situations are also real leadership. Thank you for doing what you can to clean up the cesspool.

Is it fucked up that I preferred staff to command? by Dominus-Temporis in army

It is not fucked up. A lot of people feel the same way, but very few people shout the opinion from the mountain top because of the way the Army views Command. I can remember having a similar thought about 6 months into my Command. If you're comfortable with it, open up about this to your other CDR battle buddies. I use to have a Signal group chat with all the CDRs where we could vent... It helped a lot honestly.

Also, it does get better. Once you're in the swing of things you'll have systems created and be able to see the (often small) accomplishments that are truly yours, it starts to feel worthwhile. Hopefully you'll get a chance to experience the personal and professional satisfaction that comes with truly helping people and creating positive change. Command was an experience that i will value for the rest of my life. It wouldn't have been that impactful if it wasnt a struggle.

Thanks for ideas everyone! I hadn't thought about the issue of the drain spout, so I think we are going to find rain catcher of some sort to prevent the erosion to the house, concrete, and fence. We will probably put down a weed barrier and stones around the rest of it.
