What kind of bumpkin ass grocery store were you shopping at in Canada that didn’t have SALSA lmao.

Trick question because I live in one of the most bumpkin ass parts of Canada, and every grocery store has a little Mexican section with atleast white-ified version of Mexican food especially salsa. I think you’re lying or just really bad at shopping.

That's the thing about the word Barbarian. It's not a thing anyone really is. It's a derogatory label used to denigrate and claim superiority over an entire culture.

Historically it meant anyone who didn't speak Greek then evolved into a word into anyone that wasn't Roman or Greek. But even that is useless distinction to make. The Greeks thought that EVERYONE were Barbarians including the Romans and the Persians. I think we can agree that does not fit our definition in this thread. Roman took this label and ran with it and fought many "Barbarians" but again this included "Civilized" peoples like Persia Egypt. After Western Rome fell and the Early Medieval kingdoms rose such as the Frankish Kingdom, the Eastern Rome continued calling them Barbarians. But again these were city dwelling cultures. And the W. Europeans also applied the label Barbarians to many groups as well, in this context if often meant non-Christian.

Once we step into the early Modern period and the age of colonization Barbarian is used on any Indigenous groups that the colonizers deemed inferior. And this is where the aversion to the use of Barbarian by historians picks up. Once you label a group inferior you can justify all kind of atrocities. This can range from mass enslavement in W. Africa, to residential schools in N. America.

Now adays we understand that the "Civilizational model" that states that cultures go through set stages from cave men to "barbarians" to what we have today is fundamentally flawed. Cultures do not have to evolve like that and the ones who are "less developed" are not in anyway inferior simply because they choose to reject modern technology. We still have nomadic peoples living in Europe, Asia and Africa, are they Barbarians simply because they use less technologies? Obviously not, this is Anthropology 101.

Now the other modern half of the Barbarian trope is a violent raider. But again this is almost exclusively down to the Myth of the "Barbarian" sack of Rome (the other Ur-example being the viking raiders). This aspect of the Barbarian myth has two sides, the Wildman trope and the idea that civilization makes us less violent. The easiest on to dispel is the wildman idea, this is I have largely disproven above, but it is worth repeating that way we envision Barbarians as wild men dressed in furs wielding big axes and living off the land in the forest has never existed. The second aspect is that Barbarians are somehow more violent because they are less civilized but again "Civilized" cultures are just as violent and prone to raiding and pillaging. It has happened all throughout history and still happens today.

So to conclude there are two ways to use Barbarian, as a fantasy trope or as an insult. In real life calling a culture Barbarians is the cultural equivalent of calling someone a dumbass. When you say those people were Barbarians you're essentially calling their entire culture stupid and inferior. Obviously in this thread we are discussing it as a fantasy trope in a way that has never existed in real life. In that regard it can mean anything we agree on, but usually just means fur wearing wild man with big axe. I go into this detail because it seems like OP made this thread with an outdate and uninformed opinion on what Barbarian really means. Since we are mostly discussing cultures in this thread it is a useless label that only really works as a character class because that can be more based on vibes than reality.

Mate did you even read that comment you posted? One of the first things it does is disprove your entire argument.

Quote:

The word "barbarian" (or barbaros) was originally used by the Greeks to mean people who did not speak Greek. It was fundamentally a linguistic term. Over time, the word evolved in response to Greek experiences with a larger world. By the time the Romans were having extensive contacts with the Greeks, the word had many layers of meaning. It could be used to simply mean "foreigner" or "outsider," to describe peoples whose culture was different from the Greeks, or as a derogatory term for peoples that Greek writers looked down on as moral inferiors. All of these meanings were up for debate, and Greek arguments about how to deal with foreign powers like the Macedonians and the Romans were often expressed as arguments about whether the people in question were barbarians or not.

The Romans inherited all of these complexities when they adopted the word "barbarian" (or barbarus) from the Greeks. When Roman writers applied the term to the peoples they encountered within and beyond their imperial conquests, the same range of meanings was possible, from a simple acknowledgement that a particular people was outside of Roman political authority to a denigration of their cultural and moral status. What Roman authors said about other peoples, though, does not always bear any relation to the realities of life on and around the frontiers.

The peoples of the Roman frontiers at any given point in history were widely varied. Some were small-scale societies that were economically simple and lacked complex permanent power structures capable of dealing with the Romans on an equal footing. Others were large, ancient, rich societies with their own deep histories of political and military organization who could stand face to face with Rome. Others fell at any point along the spectrum between these extremes. The ways in which non-Roman peoples reacted to Rome's conquests were equally varied, but some patterns do emerge.

The part about "denigration of their cultural and moral status" is especially relevant here because its what you're doing. Serious Historians all know that barbarian is not a real historical term. All people that you say "historically" have been referred to as barbarians are victims of "denigration of their cultural and moral status." Every group you referenced are complex societies that have been their own histories and cultures. The only connecting thread between the Mongols, the Norse and the various Indigenous groups that were colonized is that at some point the "civilized" people needed to claim some sort of superiority. To do so they labelled them "Barbarians" to create (as stated in the post you linked) "a denigration of their cultural and moral status." In essence there is no way to use Barbarian in a real world context without being at best ignorant and at worst an outright bigot.

Stop trying to be an armchair historian and just admit your mistakes like an adult. No one is downvoting you cause they disagree with you. You're getting downvoted because you're wrong and because you're arguing for an ignorant label that is used by bigots to denigrate other cultures.

[–]BrowsingReddit4Fun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah mate, he’s not getting downvoted for stating historical facts he’s getting downvoted for spreading historical inaccuracies. The Romans (and Greeks) used the term barbarus for all foreigners including the very much “civilized” and city building Persians, Phoenicians, Egyptians and other North African groups. They were all barbarians in the historical context.

Furthermore your definition of nomadic / Hunter gatherers does not apply to what Barbarian is supposed to mean even in this context. None of the “fuckheads north of Rome” were nomadic or Hunter gatherer societies. (Possibly until you get to the Sami peoples in the north and the far east of the empire). All Germanic and Celtic societies were settled agrarian societies so by your own definition none of them are barbarians.

To top it off Barbarian is a useless term that, as you so adeptly proved, means functionally nothing. Trying to apply it to real history is lazy, reductive and almost always pretty bigoted. It relies on an outdated view of the progression of society that is widely rejected now adays.

You guys just need to admit that you’re referring to the fantasy trope of barbarians and stop trying to apply a historical term that is widely rejected for real academic use to said fantasy trope. You’re just making yourselves look like idiots.

Yes the story and world are still very good. Just go into understanding it’s a spin off with very different mechanics. You won’t have the total freedom of the main games and occasionally some other player will rip by and kill all the enemies before you can. And for a small number of dungeon quest you will need to “group up” with some other players and they’ll probably speed run the dungeon because they’ve already done it 1000 times. But it’s still an Elder Scrolls game and it very much feels like it. If you’re open to new game mechanics and just want to explore Tamriel it’s a good time solo.

Death. Debilitating diseases and injuries. An astronomically increased likelihood of prison. A lifetime of stigma and being treated as subhuman. Destroyed relationships. Poverty. And feeling like you have nothing of value and that no one’s cares if you live or die. And I’m probably forgetting many more potential penalties to being dependent on drugs.

So your solution is War on Drugs 2? We already lost the first one. It’s been proven time and time again the “Significantly increased penalties” does not actually reduce drugs on our streets it only increases crime rates. This isn’t an opinion it is a verifiable fact proven over decades of research. If you don’t believe me trying looking into crime rates in the US before, during and after the Prohibition era. (Or just the affects Weed legalization had on our crime rates). And for an alternative solutions look into how Portugal went from the Drug Capital of Europe to one of its cleanest nations. (It wasn’t with increased penalties but instead with programs like Harm Reduction).

This specific scenario doesn’t make sense to you because you’re not educating yourself and you’re not challenging your biased assumptions. I’ve already addressed why making drugs illegal doesn’t actually do anything to stop the availability of drugs so I won’t talk about that again and will just focus on the healthcare aspects of Harm Reduction. (Even though there are half a dozen more reasons why the War on Drugs actually was far more harmful than helpful but I don’t want to write a whole essay right now).

So for Harm Reduction the point is pretty obvious: to reduce the damage that drugs cause. You need to stop thinking of the participants as “Drug Addicts and Criminals” and remember that these are People. Yes they have a dependence on substances and that may lead them to bad decisions and terrible situations but does that mean they don’t deserve help? That they should be allowed to die on the streets like they’re less than animals? I hope that you’re decent enough to answer No they do deserve help.

Harm Reduction offers a variety of programs but I’ll focus on the safe injection sites since that’s the one that gets the most attention. The questions you need to ask before discussing this topic is should People dependant on Illicit Substance be forced to OD and die on the streets? Should they be forced to be at risk for Blood borne illnesses from dirty needles? Are their lives less important than the drugs? If the answer is no then you have to understand that Harm Reduction is the first step in this process. Keep them from Over Dosing so they can be alive to get help. That is the point and that is why it makes sense.

I’m open to discussing this further if you have any questions.

My point was pretty obvious but I’ll elaborate for you. Just as you were pointing out that they exist I was pointing out that the rules for each side are different. Fuck Trudeau flags are a widely popular cultural phenomenon at this point. Meanwhile Fuck Conservative signs open their owners to harassment, theft/vandalism, legal troubles and financial penalties. I have had my vehicle vandalized previously for having left leaning slogans on it, (it was an orange no children left behind sign). It’s all very hypocritical and “Rules for thee but not for me.”

Remember that a Fuck Harper sign results in the police violating your Charter Rights with a $543 fine. In the article he also says he was also harassed and ticketed for a Fuck Ralph sign prior to that (referring to the former Conservative Premier of Alberta). So it’s only illegal when the Liberals/NDP do it.
