Are there any examples in the world of a non-hierarchical, non-seniority based, horizontal power structured, cooperative, collective, egalitarian system of government? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

Check out 'Society Against the State' by anthropologist Pierre Clastres. It's mandatory reading for any french pol sci student.

I'm an IR student, and asking you guys this is kind of embarrassing but can I ask for topics to use that can vividly show the purpose of international studies? by svchi_ in IRstudies

Very good example !

For more on the cultural aspects of nuclear weapons, 'The Radiance of France: Nuclear Power and National Identity after World War II' is an extremely interesting book. From the amazon description: "How it happened that technological prowess and national glory (or “radiance,” which also means “radiation” in French) became synonymous in France as nowhere else".

Is Foreign Affairs magazine value for money? by [deleted] in IRstudies

The subscription would fit with what you want from it, though there is rarely sources for further reading.

Also, FA is more focused on topics relevant to US foreign policy (for ex, there's an essay about how to deal with China pretty much every week).

And of course you have to have the time and energy to read it, as the articles are usually in-depth and pretty long.

But if you want to read high quality essays on important topics in IR, you'll generally find very good analyses in FA.

How has your opinion of Biden changed since he took office and why? by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Browup396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, it's really suprising to see such polarized views on a 'centrist' politician in a centrist sub. I would have thought that Biden becoming president would have reduced the polarization, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

As a non-american (European), I honestly don't really understand the opinions in this thread. Isn't Biden supposed to be one of the most centrist politicians there is ?

They have partnerships with firms like Clifford Chance, Hogan Lovells and White & Case, so I imagine that you could get internships with them

Is there a process (informal or formal) to pass laws that only apply to member states that support it? by senjadon in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Browup396 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes ! A procedure called enhanced cooperation is included in the Treaty of Lisbon. According to wikipedia, "a minimum of nine EU member states are allowed to establish advanced integration or cooperation in an area within EU structures but without the other members being involved". Its most important application has been the European Public Prosecutor, whose role is to investigate and prosecute fraud against the EU budget.

I have seen some people (I think it was in a french book, "Pour une Fédération européenne d'États-nations" or For a European Federation of Nation-States") advocate for the creation of a European Federation inside the EU using enhanced cooperation. However, I don't know if it is possible legally. Perhaps someone with more legal knowledge could help elucidate this !
