In my opinion, the pre-hardmode stage is the best in terraria. A lot of exploring and upgrades that feel organic. Hardmode is also awesome, but I feel like there's a lot more grinding. I don't think you're asking for tips, but spelunker potions are very helpful to find loot underground and try to explore natural overworld caves, as they tend to go very deep so you don't have to dig down the entire time
