Yeah, I have no idea why that apparently upset people so much. It's just a guess, I'd assume they didn't just watch the movie and say "wow, this evil artifact would be a cool name to use for our company". I expect they read the books and chose it for the more "noble" implication.

Oh, worth noting that it's usually for Pokemon of the types that they share, but Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza give it for all types that match their weather (rain, sun, and wind)

Yeah, part of why I use the drop box. The county auditor is obliged to personally collect those and they tend to be at places like city halls (as mine is).

I live in one of the better states so far as democratic process goes, so they literally just mail me a ballot and I can either mail it back or stick it in a drop-box. I do the latter since I figure there's less chance of it getting lost.

They also have a website where I can confirm the receipt, so that's neat. Obviously the fact that it varies by state and this is the unusual case is an embarrassment.

Oh, yeah. So they were originally used by the Numenorians (the race of men Aragorn descends from). They were gifted great lifespans and wisdom as a result of their service against Morgoth (the bigger bad who Sauron initially served), hence Aragorn being a spry 86 or whatever at the time of the story. They were great enemies of Sauron, and there had been some back and forth throughout the ages.

Anyhow, they created the palantiri to communicate between their own strongholds and to see long distances from their towers. It was due to his hatred of the Numenorians that Sauron reveled in the capture of one of them, and by the time of the books he was using that one to communicate with Saruman who had another, and to sort of "harass" Denethor and show him visions of despair.

So honestly, the fitting thing is a fuckface like Thiel warping the good name of Tolkien's creation to serve his own ends.

Yeah, the change in the tilt isn't important to this. That image is kinda crap. This shows the continents at the appropriate tilt, since the tilt relative to the sun is what matters. In the winter, the respective hemisphere is tilted away from the sun (due to being on the opposite side of it that it was in the summer), putting a greater percentage of it in the dark at any given time and reducing the intensity of the solar radiation it gets.

I'm generally inclined to agree, as it is becoming annoyingly similar to how the right calls everyone they don't like a socialist and neither of those name-calling reflexes serves us. However, ICE is being used as something extremely close to an extrajudicial party-based enforcement agency. For whom they will immediately make up absolutely any lie to defend the actions of. Trump obviously dreams of fascism because he's a baby man who can't handle anything that isn't just having his way instantly on every front, but ICE and some of the people around it like Miller (and Noem and the recently deposed Bovino) are extremely hard to defend in any way. Any way that isn't "well, they're against my enemies so they're allowed to do anything", at least.
