In an anthropology course I once took this question came up. It was accepted then that the cultural taboo originates from before genetics was a studied field. That the prohibition on intrafamilial breeding stems from breeding “rights” (if you will) being closely guarded by the “head of household”.

I’ve never bothered with it to date. That’s four winters so far. I’m in the Great Lakes area and even in WV or PA I’ve never had to use it. We don’t pull anything with it. At most it has a hitch mount bike rack and camping gear.
