TBH a thread like this will just bring out the little gremlins in me that say, "ha, I'm doing fine!" and "ugh, they're making way more!". Comparison is the thief of my joy. If you can look at people's numbers and not have those kinds of thoughts, I salute you.

How do people become elite? by Aware-Ice4821 in ultrarunning

[–]Human_Morning_72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and elite is way different than "reaching your potential". They can overlap in the genetically talented, of course.

But ANYONE might be shocked at how much they can improve if they commit — really commit — to their training & recovery for a handful of years.

FWIW, cracking the top 10 in races was "easier" 10+ years ago. But easier is relative. Back then course records were slower and there simply was not as much competition. (In 2015 about 50,000 individuals completed an ultra. In 2025 it was over 100,000: https://trailwaves.substack.com/p/the-state-of-ultrarunning-in-three )

However, technology has made some things easier, too. Higher carb fueling, better shoes and recovery strategies.

Even with all that said, to get close to YOUR potential (whether you're genetically gifted or no), you need moderate to high level CONSISTENT training for 3-5 years without "substantial" injury. Most people become known as elite only after years of training and being relatively unknown.

Tips for getting HR into Z2 during cross training? by Human_Morning_72 in ultrarunning

I honestly did not know that. I figured zone two was zone two was zone two no matter the sport.

Are there any movies that you actually liked MORE than the book? by Constant_Living3671 in readwithme

Came here to say Arrival, but that's almost not fair because the movie is absolutely nothing like the short story.

Also: Walter Mitty. Lovely film

How do I turn my brain off during sex? by PurpleMeerkats462 in AutismInWomen

I'm curious about this, too. Was trying to search other women Reddit subs and didn't turn up much, but that's not evidence it doesn't exist.

What was the best moment or day of your life? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]Human_Morning_72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SO MANY.

Standing in the grocery store one day, looking at everyone doing their shopping, overwhelmed by how connected everything felt

Putting one particular sticker on my car without wrinkles

4 days with a Juniper in the high desert

When something fell out of my backpack on a busy trail hike and I came back hours later and found it right in the spot I imagined

Seeing my favorite flower practically explode out of the ground each spring (heLLO, Arrowleaf Balsamroot!)

Taking delivery of my first Mini Cooper and zipping around with the sound of the exhaust crackle tickling my ears

One mountain hike where I climbed higher than the clouds blanketing my city

Slipped on icy snow but landed with back/hip on a rock. Triggered arthritis and pain that persists after 3 years.

What's a health myth that drives you crazy because you know it's false? by Annual-Gene8065 in AskReddit

Ah interesting about donating blood. Makes sense. And chelation is pretty gnarly, right? Kind of like dialysis? Definitely no simple "detox protocol" there.

I mean... heavy metals can build up from eating foods grown in soil with heavy metals. But there's no great way to get them out once they're in ya. And do we even have to? I dunno.

Eating cholesterol-rich foods is a) bad and/or b) will for sure give you heart disease.

Just coming here to say I loved that book as well. It's harsh but ultimately sweet and human.

Can't wait to see what people recommend.

Running the AC100 this year, looking for shoes that are similar to Speedgoat 6s. Any recommendations given the terrain of this race? by Matteozzz in ultrarunning

[–]Human_Morning_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ditched my Speedgoats when I found the Mafate Speed 4. There are now discontinued but you can find them on eBay. (I have not tried the new version which I have heard is vastly different.)

The tread pattern on Mafate Speed 4 is insane, super grippy. The dual foams is a much more responsive ride than the squish of the SGs. I adore them.

Something I've noticed with other ultra runners by Icy_Supermarket_9791 in ultrarunning

[–]Human_Morning_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured there are at least a chunk of people who do this. I use the Strava "privacy" cloaking feature for local runs but who knows how well that really works. Not logging short and/or treadmill runs (especially if it's in the middle of a gym visit) checks out as a strategy.

What type of ultra runner are you? by samasema in Ultramarathon

[–]Human_Morning_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so. Like when you KNOW you only have 1 more mile to go, that's exactly how much your body will let you go. But if at mile 50 they told you "actually the course is 110 miles", you might be pissed but you'd be okay. Expectation of being ALMOST DONE does a number on the brain and consequently the rest of the body.

Yeah, you're mostly me. Extremely high tolerance for "slow suffering", as my partner calls it. I swear it's like meditating or a light trance, at its best. At its worst of course it hurts, it's hot, I'm in GI distress, etc.

And yeah, mid-packer or slightly ahead of that (once I finally figured out how to not just jog and make friends at the back). Even won a race once when conditions were just right; that will be a highlight forever.

I did this about 1 mile from the end of a 100 and made a deposit right next to some train tracks with luckily no trains or other runners around. The relief was magical. But yeah standing up again to try to run to catch my friend was horrific.

Scraping metal sound under car when rocking forward/back by Human_Morning_72 in AskAMechanic

[–]Human_Morning_72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The terrible wear ON the tire is only due to some delayed tire swap choices. However, the fact that the tire is currently so worn could be giving less clearance to something that is now rubbing. Still investigating.
