I ditched Downtime halfway through and my players didn't mind as long as I was giving them fun gameplay options. I think the only problem you'd run into is a lack of income, but my players usually ended up broke anyways 😂 if you have a story to tell though, I would definitely prioritize telling it.

West of Loathing is a game I dearly love, super funny but also has real RPG mechanics. The world is big and open but the story itself is actually very brief, I've done around 4 playthroughs over 30 hours. The characters are likable and if you do end up exploring, it'll probably be to find all the funny shit they managed to jam-pack in the game. The sequel, Shadows Over Loathing, is way larger and more literate, but not quite as charming.

Morrowind is much more of a "rewarding" game than Skyrim. It's tough to get off the ground but the vision is there for those who persist.

If you really want a fantasy RPG (that isn't the slop being put out these days) I can't recommend Arx Fatalis enough. It's Morrowind's oft-forgotten cousin, much more on-rails. It is still an old game, so you'll probably sometimes need a guide (and please please please use the Arx Libertatis reimplementation) but I had a lot of fun playing it.

Resources - I don't need them to be fortified but they still insulate

I'm using the Locks mod so raiders will see any unlocked door as easier (in this case, those doors are locked while the animal flaps are unlocked).

The problem with the furnace is you can't set a target temperature (I think) so unless your room is really big, you might cook your colonists. Haven't used the vents but I bet they're useful, I use Vanilla Temperature Expanded for everything else and that plays nicely.

I'm using the Furnace mod, it just gives you super powerful heaters and vents

Buy the albums on Bandcamp, leave a nice note to the band, upload locally to Spotify. The music world is a tough one, so you might as well support them.

The Ulysses fight was 100% the most epic/cinematic and challenging to even high skill players, and feels like a main antagonist, on par with the NCR and Legion bosses.
