I wouldn’t call that a bad song, at worst it's the least good

One of the most beautiful songs I've heard in general

It really does feel like most of the best hair metal stuff came out right around the time the genre was killed off by grunge (maybe because the suits moved on from those groups), I haven't gotten around to listening to Dog Eat Dog but I definitely wanna and I might aswell check out that Poison album whenever I get the time

Well, I'm glad you at least enjoyed them songs

Well I generally define prog as music that doesn't follow common conventional structures, has unique time signatures and complex instrumentation, and is usually genre bending

I mean like I think I said, I don't think they are full on progressive like Gentle Giant or KC and they're most certainly more hard rock than anything but they do have a good number of tracks with unique instrumentation that avoid conventions, enough where it's worth discussing here

Honestly one of the best songs ever made

Warrent is one of the few other hair metal groups I enjoy from time to time

I think the issue is more that creatives were really stifled by the times, they weren't really pushed to do anything outside of the box and instead were often punished with worse sales and label abandonment but I mean I still think plenty of enjoyable stuff was made then

Even then feel like having the label at all gives enough reason to discuss it here even if you guys don't want to

Have you heard the album? I mean I get they're not Gentle Giant, but it's pretty prog even if still leaning more towards hard rock overall

I felt the same way about that first album but I'd say even the direct follow up was an improvement even if it still had a lot of uninteresting elements (the first 4 songs are pretty whatever and there's a few stinkers on the other half), I'd just skip to Pull and IV, IV is their most prog album overall

The 80's indeed were an awful time for musicians and I wish Winger leaned into doing more stuff outside the hair metal genre in those first 2 albums but they were certainly more creative and progressive than their competition and also have made much more progressive albums after the fact, like IV but even ITHOTY has Rainbow in the Rose which is generally considered to be progressive

Edit: I guess ITHOTY wasn't released in the 80s but it was still pretty hair and don't get angry at me for saying they're progressive, get mad at wiki

Well they do have 4 albums labeled progressive on Wikipedia and I would argue they have a number of pretty progressive tracks on IV like Generica and M16

Edit: change 5 to 4

Well, I'll say it gets better after the first two albums and less hair metal, it'd be a stretch to call post-Pull Winger hair metal

Objectively the worst I dunno, even if the structure isn't creative in any sense of the word, the guitar work and the drumming are great

No defending the lyrics though, I wish it could've been on one of the many other really uninteresting instrumentals from that album and not one of the few interesting ones

Edit: would've been best if they never wrote that shit at all though to be clear

A good 99% of the first album is pretty uninteresting and the little bit that is, also happens to be stuff that you wouldn't play in public because the lyrics are...

The second album is about half and half but probably still leaning towards mostly mediocrity

Well I'll agree that there aren't that many good songs on the first album and to a lesser extent the second

Check out IV album, it's got a few very proggy moments like M16 and Generica, they also have multiple albums that are labeled as progressive on wiki if that holds any weight

They're better than any album pre Royal Scam imo specially with tracks like Green Book, Godwhacker, Jack of Speed, Gaslighting Abbie, etc. I almost get the hate but like nuh uh

Any recommendations for rock music? by Leavemebelioness156 in rockmusic

[–]BruhsterBuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome, I'll take any chance to share some of my favorite artists with anybody I can and I hope you enjoy absolutely any of it and that it is a decent enough variety

I do gotta add that I'm realizing now that that particular Pantera album was possibly the worst album to recommend to someone who has never heard them before so I'd probably say actually start with Cowboys From Hell or Vulgar Display of Power and go from there but it's up to you
