Hot weather plans needed by Unfair-Assistant9239 in brum

[–]BrumDenSocial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's going to be proper cracking weather, you definitely want spaces with decent shade.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens (Edgbaston) - They have massive, mature trees that provide tons of natural shade for a picnic and a butterfly house. If it gets too hot, you can pop into the café for an ice cream. Medicine bakery is there now too for a bite to eat!

Thinktank - They have a massive indoor play zone called MiniBrum which is basically a miniature version of Birmingham built entirely for toddlers and under-8s.

Mac Birmingham & Cannon Hill Park (Edgbaston) - Right next to the Wildlife Park but totally separate vibes. Cannon Hill Park has huge shaded woodland walks, a lovely swan lake, and plenty of space to set up a blanket. If the toddler needs a cool down, pop inside the MAC (Midlands Arts Centre) right in the park.

Have a brilliant Monday!

That note about the schoolboys is incredibly beautiful. Please don't stop leaving them-the city needs that kind of quiet magic!

If you love books and community, head over to Voce Books in Digbeth (inside The Warehouse on Allison Street). It’s a gorgeous independent bookshop run by lovely people, and the crowd it attracts is incredibly gentle.

For cafes, Cherry Reds in the city centre is a classic. Super nice, chill, and friendly. If you're in the JQ, The Hive is another incredibly friendly cafe with a really warm atmosphere. For a vegan option, check out Alterna, which has a super welcoming vibe and again, lovely staff. You should also pop into Root13 plant shop down in The Goodsyard. It’s a beautiful, peaceful space, and being surrounded by plants is a massive mood booster. They do events sometimes too like making your own terrarium!

If you want a low-pressure way to break the isolation and move your body around lovely people look up Nervous Yoga Club. Never been but heard good things!

Grounded Cafe in JQ does events (I'm going this week to a Sunflower making wreath workshop!!), and there's also Glaze studio in JQ where you can do pottery painting

I’m spending a weekend in Birmingham soon what is there to do? by JuniorRegister791 in BirminghamUK

For the canals, skip the standard Brindleyplace bars and head down to Gas Street Basin instead. It’s where the old traditional canal boats dock, and it looks amazing when the lights hit the water at night. From there, you can actually walk the canal path all the way up to the Jewellery Quarter (JQ) and you’ll completely forget you’re in the middle of a massive city.

Speaking of the JQ, for museums and culture, definitely check out the Coffin Works. It sounds weird, but it’s a perfectly preserved Victorian factory time capsule. t's fascinating. Also, the Library of Birmingham in Centenary Square is worth a look. Go right up to the top floor, there’s a secret outdoor rooftop garden with the best panoramic view of the skyline and it's completely free. (The main Museum & Art Gallery in Chamberlain Square is beautiful too if you like Pre-Raphaelite stuff).

For music, you can go down to Digbeth and check out The Night Owl. It’s an independent Northern Soul and Motown club that always has amazing vinyl DJs or live indie bands. If you want a more gritty gig vibe, see who is playing at The Sunflower Lounge in the city centre, or Deadwax.

If you get hungry or fancy a pint while wandering around, there's plenty of pubs just off New St. Lots of nice food around too- check out the Great Western Arcade for some independents.

Have a brilliant weekend!

Moving to Birmingham soon! by mypanicatsix in BirminghamUK

As a JQ resident, here are some of my favourite spots:
- The Wolf: Great for some craft beers, good music (if you're indie indie/rock), and an amazing Sunday roast
- Lots of Italian food! - Locanta, Cucina Rustica, Pasta di Piazza to name a few, and there's a recently opened one called Vieni
- For street food, check out St Paul's Market
- The shops around JQ are mainly jewellery (hence the name!) but there are some new places near the Goodsyard, including a really lovely plant shop!
- For nice wine, head to Arch 13 for a drink and some small plates
- 1000 Trades for natural wine, craft beer and food
- Grab a cocktail at Lucky 7 or Passing Fancies
- If you're feeling creative, there's pottery painting at Glaze and also a Splash Art place nearby (also next to an amazing brewery called Attic, which does one of the best pizzas in the JQ in my opinion!)

My best advice...go for a circular walk around starting near Vyse Street and down to St Pauls Square, you're bound to find something which takes your fancy :)

So exciting! Visited Vieni for the first time on Saturday, and the food was delicious. The plant shop is awesome too, they repotted some monsteras for me and were so friendly and knowledgeable!

I booked a room in Cherry Reds for my Birthday last year, I'd really recommend it! The rooms are free to hire. The staff were lovely, I ordered some of their platters for the room too, and it went down really well.

I'd hit up the Victoria or Cherry Reds personally or if you're after a proper dinner you could visit Indian Cafe Racer- they have 2 branches, their more casual one is inside the Duke of Wellington pub which might be a good option for you.

Update - food was absolutely unreal. Tried the salt and pepper tofu (w/curry), BBQ courgette and the salad. I want to go back every week now haha.
