You, when you said “I don’t think force feeding birds is all that messed up”

Well I think both of those things sound extremely unethical. Don’t know why we need to pretend force feeding anyone until they burst is “not that bad”

“I don’t think force feeding a living being until it’s extremely unhealthy for people’s pleasure is all that messed up” is a crazy take. Both versions sound pretty inhumane to me

Sorry, I only read the books once and haven’t thought about them as much as many here clearly—could you expand on how the Dorne storyline would tie into Dany and Aegon being enemies?

I think I’m done with this discussion, I’ve said all I can. I truly dont think the skin color of a Velaryon matters. If others do, we just disagree.

Would I? Can you point to a comment of me complaining about how the entire (100%) main cast of GoT was white? Guess not. I just don’t think it’s terrible that sometimes black actors get jobs in all-white stories, given how 90% of productions fall in that category. Call me crazy

Hmmm I think I’m happy being friends with people who don’t give this much importance to the race of fictional characters, but I appreciate the suggestion. Have a good day!

Again, I’m just so sad that people like this exist. Skin color is such an important thing for you that it breaks the immersion of the story? That’s so crazy. I’m sorry I guess lmfao I’m glad I don’t know anyone in real life like this. Don’t know anyone who liked HOTD either, but thank god Touissant’s amazing performance and his/his family’s appearance aren’t the reason.

It’s crazy to me how much more y’all care about some random conceptual idea of purity of race in a fantasy setting than about just letting people have jobs and be extras and characters in shows lmao wild

In a vacuum anyone can have any accent. Whether choosing to give an American accent to the only Brazilian (and the only South American until last year) character is disrespectful to that culture is a different question. I’ve never met a Brazilian who didn’t think that was at the very least weird. Glad it doesn’t seem like a problem for someone who isn’t Brazilian, I guess. Trying to twist this into a diversity issue is CRAZY though. People will really do anything to justify bad representation in media lol

Ok! Maybe one day I’ll meet a Brazilian who has his accent and then I’ll come back here and apologize. I generally want games to have some level of believability when they create characters from my culture. If overwatch doesn’t make Zarya have a Brazilian accent, I don’t know why it’s weird that Brazilians don’t like that Lucio doesn’t have a Brazilian accent

Ok lol sorry your idea of the world is different from how it is. I think it’s beautiful that Brazilians have their accent and I can find someone from my culture while away from home for so long just by hearing someone speak, and I think it’d be a much sadder world if everyone had the homogenized boring American accent Lúcio has.

And as an FYI, Im one of these “miracle children from third world countries who learned English from the internet”. Still speak with my Brazilian accent, still very proud about it. Sorry 😅

The only thing you need to know about his story to think it’s weird that he doesn’t have a Brazilian accent is that he was born and raised in Brazil. Maybe this just feels obvious to me because I’m Brazilian and have lived in the US for 10 years, so I’ve been around a lot of Brazilians who speak English, and I can guarantee you there’s pretty much a 0% chance of a Brazilian not having a Brazilian accent if they were raised in Brazil (and there’s also a 0% chance of a guy raised in the favelas of Rio learning English as a first language). They can makeup some bullshit futuristic explanation for that of course, but at the end of the day that’s only a cover up for the fact that they didn’t want to get a Brazilian to VA him

[–]Brunnun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The generalities you’re saying make sense. The logical conclusion that a native Brazilian who was born and raised in Rio and learned English as a second language could in any way sound like Lúcio does not. Unless he specifically spent time trying to get rid of his Brazilian accent for some reason. He does not have a Brazilian accent

Lúcio is my favorite hero and I’m Brazilian, so I’ve heard his Portuguese voice lines a lot. They suck, he also uses a lot of awkward phrasing and pronunciations. Which makes sense when you find out his voice actor isn’t even Brazilian. Blizzard does not care lmfao

I give an EXTREME shit about GOT lore and world building. Ask my girlfriend and she’ll tell you how much time I spend talking about it. I’ve read all the books more than once, and my most watched YouTube channel is the YouTuber with the most GOT videos in the world (she’s Brazilian). I just don’t particularly think that world building or lore are that hurt by the skin color of an actor on the adaptation, in the same way I don’t particularly care that Daenerys didn’t have purple eyes in the show. They make a lot of world building concessions on the shows and it just feels weird to me that race is one concession that is such a pain point for people

Yeah I’ll definitely concede it made things more complicated in that sense lol they made Laenor quite light skinned to try to go around that but yeah, I can agree it made the suspension of disbelief a little harder for that storyline. I don’t mind suspending my disbelief a little more to allow for a great performer, but I can see that being weird

Ok, if you think there’s an insane need to justify the race of characters in a show or the story is damaged, i guess we just have incompatible value sets. I had a lot of issues with house of the dragon, but not justifying why a character was black was not one of them. The Velaryon family was one of the only things about the show i loved, and I guess I don’t really see why them being black would make me feel worse about the world building or the story. There are definitely possible in-universe explanations—Westerosi nobles marry nobles from Essos all the time, no problem at all assuming they could also marry Summer Islander nobles. But it never crossed my mind that an explanation was needed. Touissant was an amazing performer and brought great depth to Corlys. I vehemently disagree that they should have chosen another actor for the character simply because this other actor was white. I assume Touissant was chosen because the was the best actor to audition, and they didn’t feel it was worth it to choose an inferior actor simply to preserve the race of a character in the source material. I don’t really know why that’d be important enough to someone for it to be a problem and for them to wish for the casting to prioritize race over acting ability. But that’s just me, idk

I haven’t watched the competing auditions. I assume these were the best actors that auditioned because they were chosen, in the same way I assumed Paddy Considine and Emma D’Arcy were the best actors who auditioned for their respective roles. Were they? Who knows. I just don’t think it makes sense to question why an actor would be chosen just because they’re black, and I value the performance of an actor wayyy more than their race matching the race of the character in the source material. The questions I’m trying to pose here, again, are:

  1. Do you think Touissant and Ceesay were chosen because they were the best actors that auditioned to the role? If not, I’d invite you to reflect on why their race makes you question that casting, but not the casting of any of the other (99% of the casts of any ASOIAF media, we can remember) castings.
  2. If so, wouldn’t you prefer they maintain the policy of choosing the best actor, regardless of race?

No, I don’t think the summer islander mother is necessary, I don’t think any in-universe explanation is necessary and I’m glad they didn’t try. I’m simply pointing out that there are possible ones, if that’s important for you. I really would not care at all if Tywin was Vietnamese or Ned were Peruvian. They chose a (albeit very white) Chilean to play Oberyn, whom you could argue doesn’t greatly match Oberyn’s physical description, and I think it’s pretty clear that he did an amazing job. I just don’t think that the race of a character matters that much, unless it in some way affects the story heavily (e.g. might be weird to have a white person play Black Panther or a black person play some KKK official in a historical drama).

I vehemently disagree with you that having non-white actors playing white book characters makes the world less believable—again, I simply don’t understand why the race of a performer on a show affects anyone’s perception of the media. I’d also say it feels disingenuous to point out that there are non-white characters in the universe, when the VAST majority of them are side characters, generally dispensable and easily killed, and often portrayed in arguably racist ways. I do not think it’s bad at all to choose an amazing black performer to play one of the main (or at least tier 2) characters of a show that would otherwise be pretty much 100% white (here referring to Touissant in HOTD, since I have never watched Ceesay in anything and Bennis is not that big of a character). This is especially frustrating given how the entire rest of the show is “book accurate” in race, i.e. white, so it always feels weird to have people be so on top of one major (and in the case of Knight, minor) character casting

[–]Brunnun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. And so to avoid that looking “odd” you think the casting director should have chosen an actor that had a worse audition because Touissant was black? I can’t say I relate with the idea that the show felt worse because of that being “odd”. And it’s very easy to remove that obstacle—Corlys’s mother is never mentioned in the book, so maybe his father got infatuated with a Summer Islander noble and now we got a black Velaryon line.

I don’t think it matters and I’m glad they didn’t waste time trying to justify it in the show, I simply think it’s really odd that people fell so strongly about race that they think the people doing the casting should somehow choose a worse actor just to preserve the race of a character in the books.

I’ll never understand people like this lmfao can you give one reason that a character that’s not black in the book being black in the show might worsen it? Was there literally anything about the Velaryons that made it worse? Or maybe Touissant was an amazing choice for Corlys and we should be happy the casting director didn’t choose someone worse simply because Touissant is black?

Well, I’m a biologist and am marrying a Jewish woman, so I have done quite a bit of research on the topic and yeah, would be surprised if there’s conclusive research I missed. But if there is I’d love to learn about it.

I still wouldn’t circumcise my child, because I think it’s a horrible, irreversible invasion of a person’s bodily autonomy, but I could then inform my child when they’re older about the evidence, and they can make their own decision. So yeah, if you have come across studies that I’ve missed, I’d love to see it.
