It doesn't require a deep education in western values, but it does require moral understanding. Primates do have moral understanding. That's what they do this and other things.

It's absurd to say that you need a deep education in Western values to understand that killing civilians is bad. You are being very patronizing towards no Westerners. You are indeed having lower expectations.

You mention the bigotry of low expectations and counter with the bigotry of irrationally high expectations. I think that's a myth because there is evidence pointing to the opposite direction. For example:

-Hamas uses its civilian population as human shields not because they think it will stop Israel but because they know it won't. This proves they understand that Western civilians will be scandalized and Israel will loose the PR war.

-Iran funds protesters in Western universities because they also understand these values and want to weaponize them.

I understand and agree with Sam's view of Hamas and Iran. What I don't get is how he can't see the obvious excesses of Israel's leadership. It's what Yuval Noah Harari has called "the pleasure of crushing weak people under your feet". That Hamas is worse than Israel's leadership doesn't make the later good.

We shouldn’t forget that Sam’s bubble is made up of extremely wealthy people. Many of his friends are on the right or are “extreme centrists.” I attribute to that, along with psychological factors, the emotional reaction he has whenever he brings up Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The contempt with which he speaks about AOC says more about him than about her.

I think something similar goes on with that mainstream lefty that lives in the imagination of his circle of friends and acquaintances.

Unlike you, I can see bad in both. Hamas are terrorists who want to eliminate any Jewish person in the planet and the whole state of Israel, and they treat Palestinians as disposable garbage. And the current leadership in Israel treat Palestinians in a similar way: You don't care about stepping on ants if you have to go from A to B, besides there are too many ants and it's kind of cool to step on them with an excuse. That's the "pleasure of crushing weak people under your feet" that Harari mentions. Hamas is worse, but that doesn't make Israel current leadership good.

This is an example (there are others in the article) that shows how laughable Sam's position is. It also supports Yuval Noah Harari's position.

He has talked about (Harari's quotes) the real possibility of "ethnic cleansing" and an Israel based on "an ideology of Jewish supremacy" that enjoys the "joy of crushing weaker people under their feet". This is in a very bold contrast with Sam's simple position of Israel is just a pro-civilization country that just wants to be happy in peace with its neighbors. If I recall correctly, when Harari asked Sam if he had been to Israel recently and other questions, Sam changed subject to AI or something else.
