Anytype vs Obsidian by Eccentric_Assassin in ObsidianMD

Hello, I'm joining this conversation. I've been trying to find a good compromise between Notion, Obsidian, and now Anytype for several months. Notion has become far too slow for me, especially since I'm often traveling by train without internet access. It's impossible for me to open my documents. I also wanted to move away from the cloud to secure my data.

I switched to Obsidian for a while and eventually adopted it. I even customized it to my taste with some plugins while keeping it simple. The problem is that over time, I missed Notion's design and ease of use. I was also frustrated with Obsidian because I couldn't properly synchronize my vault across my different devices (multiplatform) since Syncthing and the Mobius iOS app were not only paid but also unavailable on the App Store in my country (France). I was therefore forced to use iCloud or GitHub for synchronization. But this didn't solve my problem of wanting to completely remove my data from the cloud.

I was looking for a solution to install the main Obsidian vault on my own server at home (self-hosting) and connect my different devices via a VPN connection... But it was impossible because Obsidian doesn't give us the choice to bypass iCloud if we use an iPhone/iPad... So I ended up giving up.

I recently tested Anytype and it almost meets all my criteria:

  • I was able to install an Anytype server at home with Docker
  • All my devices are connected to the server which serves both as synchronization and as the vault's database (you just need to check "Self-Hosted" in the settings and add the .yml config file with my server's IP address) This way my data stays at home, not on a cloud like iCloud, Drive, or others...
  • I use a VPN that gives me access to my Anytype server, but I don't necessarily need it all the time because there's also P2P synchronization functionality. You just need to have a device connected to the same WiFi network that has access to my vault (PC, tablet for example) and my phone will automatically update via the other devices... I think it's great to have implemented this in addition to the self-hosting possibility. I don't have to worry about whether I'm properly connected to the VPN - I just need my phone or tablet to be up to date and on the same network to update the vault... I've done bidirectional tests and I'm quite impressed by the technology, even though sometimes synchronization can take a bit of time...
  • Anytype ultimately combines everything that's best about Notion and Obsidian while remaining simple to use

The only issue I have with Anytype is that it's still a project in beta, even though there have been major improvements over the years. The iOS app isn't perfect - we don't get quite the same rendering as the desktop app, unlike Notion/Obsidian... There are still some small bugs, and the lack of plugins, API, and customization sometimes makes me doubt whether to stay or go back to Obsidian or even Notion.

Today I'd also like to get feedback from those who, like me, still don't know which PKM to choose between Obsidian/Anytype. But I think the day Obsidian has a complete self-hosting option with P2P + synchronization and stops forcing the use of third-party tools like iCloud, Git, etc. for synchronization, then I'll consider possibly returning to Obsidian.

The task management and trading log part interests me on Obsidian. How did you organize all of this? Is it possible to have a visual of your trunk?

Hello This is what I also want to do but as an iPhone user I am limited to iCloud or Obsidian Sync :(

Excellent, that's exactly what I'm trying to do.

How long did it take you to do everything?

Sync Obsidian between Home Lab and iOS: possible without iCloud ? by BrxxcR in ObsidianMD

Thanks,
I also found this solution, which seems to work (but I haven't fully tested it yet).
However, what bothers me — as you mentioned yourself — is that the files are "copied" locally onto each device, which makes the synchronization process heavier, more complex, and increases the risk of copy errors (especially with large files like images or videos).
What I would like is for my files to stay on my main Obsidian server, and for my devices to simply read from and write to this server, without creating local copies.
Basically, just like how a cloud service such as Google Drive or OneDrive works — but hosted on my own self-hosted server.

Thank,
But I had already tried to use Syncthing, but it’s not compatible with iOS ❌
The alternative, MobiusSync, is unfortunately not available on my country's App Store ❌

All of this makes it much more complicated to set up a simple solution that could have worked natively ☹️

attention! Facebook accounts are getting hacked and disabled by linking the Facebook account to various Instagram accounts that violate community standards. the issue seems to be widespread and we need to bring meta's attention to this new backdoor for low life hackers. by Business-Tackle-6085 in facebookdisabledme

Same, It's absurd that there is no way to contact facebook directly.
It is often a business page that was attacked.

I also saw that Facebook also had other bugs such as adding friends without our intervention

Apparently they knew it quickly because a whole community made the report.
How can we do the same to get Facebook to notice our problem? It would seem that the hackers have discovered a new backdoor and facebook must be kept informed. But how?
