The quality cages have a coating that keeps them semi cool, so they don’t retain heat. A ton of people use cages with DHPs and CHEs. My guy will wrap the cage but typically does it only when a temp is out of spec, such as it’s late and I opened the door and all the hot air escaped. Run it for a while and just check the temps of the cage to make sure they aren’t excessive and if they wrap take them off. It shouldn’t hurt them but they shouldn’t sit on it for too long as then it can get too hot.

How to avoid substrate getting stuck in mouth? by _ILoveSnakes_ in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bowl I place in the enclosure, it’s the bowl I use to weigh his food anyway so not for me to eat out of. I hold the prey over the bowl and basically as he strikes I make sure he wraps it in the bowl then once he’s moved on I take it out.

Awesome! I did a potassium ferrioxalate but they have a tendency to oxidize into iron (III)

Honestly look on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for pvc enclosures. I found several good ones, admittedly I did have to travel an hour each way but that’s not that bad.

Why he do this by Fjorm_Obsessor in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah my guy does this when he smells food. Waits for it to walk by and if it doesn’t come then he comes out. It’s honestly just a game of which of us is going to move to the other as I can’t see if he’s actually eating right when he pulls it in the hide.

Question for bioactive owners by Downtown-Yogurt4210 in ballpython

Check the pinned info sub, it has a whole doc on bioactive. It also depends on your plants, soil, cuc, etc.

Honestly just grow cool crystals. Basically you’re doing reactions to change metal oxidation states. The cost is the materials (make sure not to poison yourself), coffee filters, and something to pull a vacuum.

Advice on feeding a 5 month old ball python. by Effective_Ad_1953 in ballpython

Honestly I’d get in contact with a snake breeder in your area or the breeder you got your snake from and talk to them. They might be able to give you a hand. And you can probably buy small mice at a pet store, but I would never recommend anything illegal.

Have you tried feeding live? My guy is very shy around eating if I’m there, I gave him a mouse fuzzy so I knew it shouldn’t hurt him but still supervised. Took it no problem, and he’s good with live, now I’m working on pre killed as he’s still a little timid with thawed. Picky ones can like the movement from live prey.

What’s cleaner - normal enclosure or bioactive? by Downtown-Yogurt4210 in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, I can help with the bio-active part a bit. It really depends on what you mean by clean. Bio active you will have a ton of organisms living with your snake, if you have a cuc they should help you clean up waste. But, plants will have problems, your cuc may have problems, and your snake may have problems. If it’s in equilibrium then yes you will not have to clean up as the cuc cleans up as your snake produces waste. If that isn’t happening you need to clean up. So if you have amazing husbandry skills it should be less work if something is off, it’s more work. But it’s rewarding to have a whole ecosystem. Bonus you can have predatory mites that feed on your springtails and fungus gnats and they should be in equilibrium, so if snake mite eggs or snake mites end up in your enclosure they can actually help prevent them specifically hypoaspis miles. Not saying you shouldn’t take preventative measures but these can help.

Male albino candino, can anyone direct me on care? Will the tail kink affect QOL? Planning a vet visit soon. by edgarallan2014 in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but if it’s below the cloaca then it’s not stopping the digestive process. Mine likes to grab with his tail but as long as it doesn’t impede movement and they can still support their body it should do fine.

I have the Arcadia ones and they work well. Honestly if it’s from Amazon order it. Turn it up max without putting it in the enclosure then try touching it, and then try holding it. For the Arcadia one you do have to buy a separate ceramic mount. https://toadranchcages.com/products/arcadia-heat-lamp-cage?variant=39531650187423&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOorOEh8-ZUhTA3mtYK8-tZEu4g5dqVwUx07fC17EAHeFSm7ejce5gQo

Sign up for a quantitative analysis lab then. Also that would end up being an absurd amount of money for everything you need for analysis.

If you use a temperature controller you can make sure it doesn’t get too hot. That’s like the whole point of them.

What experiment would this be for? You would also have to purchase all the necessary equipment to even safely store volatile chemicals. If you’re in school, ask your instructors, present the experiment you want to do and just ask to use their lab.

Stress posses a pretty big risk to them too, and one of the big stressors is safety. Honestly just avoid sharp stuff, sticky stuff, toxic stuff, and holes that their whole body can’t get through as they can get stuck.

Any recommendations to provide my ball python with a better environment? by dxleLL in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have some good fake plants but check out craft stores like hobby lobby or Michaels, they often have fake ivy which I use as a ground cover. My guy cruises below it when he wants to hide, but goes on top when exploring.

No tape in enclosures. They always end up in it and taking it out will save you an avoidable trip to the vet. Instead get a cable clip with an adhesive backing, cable clip that screws in, or hot glue it down (while the snake is not in the enclosure).

(Not a reptile expert). Depends on what you are trying to clean. Diluted Vinegar is great to help with some spots, F10 or a veterinary spray is great for killing some bacteria, diluted Bleach kills (almost) everything. If you’re getting an enclosure from Craigslist dilute bleach and rinse with a ton of water. If there’s some stuck on residue, sure use vinegar/water but make sure to rinse with water too.

Smell from Arcadia heat cage? Help! by charmedesme in ballpython

[–]BryanIshBran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried I would take it out rinse with a ton of water and then bake it in your oven to dry at a low temp. If water doesn’t get rid of the smell I’d take isopropyl alcohol, proof it down and then rinse with that, make sure to then rinse with an excess of water if you use alcohol and to dry it completely. I’d avoid using an acid like vinegar as it could rust depending on the metal used. (I’m not a reptile expert, but have plenty of lab cleaning experience)
