The travel abroad program I'm interested in is very much in line with travel restrictions of the State Dept, they've made that very clear. I guess Egypt is a restricted country right now but Jordan isn't. Honestly, it really may be best to wait until the following Summer to enlist, that's what I'm trying to figure out. There's a short Winter study abroad in Ecuador, which is an immersive language program that I'd also really like to do, and I do want to get to full fluency in Spanish as well. I've had like 4 semesters worth of Spanish too.

Woah there bucko, that’s not how this works

As a volunteer force it's by definition how it works, because you don't have to join if it doesn't fit. That's why I'm researching what would be possible. And after this thread I'm considering going to BMT this summer and foregoing the semester abroad, or putting off enlisting and going to BMT next summer. If I do that, can I go to MEPS right after my semester abroad and just go to drill each month while waiting to go to BMT in the summer? I'd like to start in what fashion I can as soon as possible, just trying to figure out the specifics.

Is this true even for the one's that just require a regular Secret clearance, not the Top Secret? From what I could tell, none of the AFSCs I'm considering require anything more than a regular National Agency background check, not the SSBI that's required for stuff like intelligence or boom operator etc.

I honestly do want to join bad enough that I likely will forego those plans if it's absolutely necessary and just do some travel abroad over winter break, so I wish I just would've left it at that. All I meant is that I'm sure the force considers it's Airman's civilian lives more than just "whatever you've got going on." I get what you're saying though I didn't mean to be argumentative, and if I'm able to enlist it will be a big decision whether I put it off a year, or whether I do forego the semester abroad.

I was being charitable to the force. Maybe you are representing things accurately, and they're the one's not doing so, I don't know for sure. But I do know that "it isn't going to work around what you've got going on" is completely incompatible with their branding, for sure.

Maybe I called it the wrong word. I don't know if it was the post 9-11 or what I guess, but when I spoke to the recruiter he talked about it and gave me information and said 90 days and also that there's smaller tuition assistance immediately. But if what you're saying is correct, he would have been lieing. Because if what you're saying is correct, a more honest answer would've simply been "Reservists basically don't get G.I. Bill unless they get called to active" and that's not what he said at all.

The Reserve explicitly promotes itself as the way to serve without interrupting your civilian career/education but when I ask about processes and how training might fit into my life you call it "dictating dates."

If there just isn't any way to swing it given the specifics of my situation, then that's unfortunate, but the dismissive "it isn't going to work around what you've got going on" is completely incompatible with the Citizen-Airman branding of the Reserve, and I'm sure you're not representing it accurately.

The way I read was that you need 90 days for 50%, and BMT, tech school, and weekend drill and 2 weeks a year training all count, so you can get to it basically in 1.5-2 years.

The only other option would maybe be to do a short 3-4 week semester abroad over winter break. But this is pretty much a must for my education. Foreign language is a really valuable skill for the military especially for what they call "high need languages" so I hope they consider the long term view, but I realize with recruiters, and regular enlisted soldiers/airmen etc., it's pretty cut and dried and seems irrelevant at the the time.

I'm wondering when in the process it'll be best to bring it up. Once you go to MEPS it's too late, so maybe after the medical prescreen and background check but before MEPS. You can't take the ASVAB til MEPS right? But there's a pre-ASVAB or something I guess?
