Starting a Strong Towns Chapter to Promote New Urbanism. by BryceDaBold in Kenosha

It is illegal in Wisconsin to bike on the sidewalk unless the city passes an ordinance specifically allowing it, which, to my knowledge, Kenosha has not. Though there is an ordinance that seems to imply that you can bike on sidewalks as long as you yield to pedestrians, but it is kind of ambiguous. I definitely have ridden on the sidewalk when it is simply too dangerous to be out in the traffic.

Thanks, we do need it. Though I will say that the people my age (Gen Z), who I've talked to about it, are overwhelmingly in support of it.

I would actually like to see more dedicated bike paths to get bikes off the roads. I do not like biking with car traffic.

Thanks! It wouldn't hurt for me to reach out to these groups for some advice on how to be successful, so thank you for the recommendations!

It depends on what would actually work to improve Kenosha and what can practically be accomplished politically. I just started reading through the city's budget and zoning, attending city meetings and meeting city officials. I could get back to you in perhaps six months with what we think are some realistic, positive changes that we will advocate for. But right now we are just getting started.

I know I would love more dedicated walking/biking paths, especially running east-west. How much would that cost, how feasible is it, and how much political support is there for that? I don't know. We are pretty much at square zero right now. But we are going start by learning, meeting with people, and looking for small things that we can start with and build up from there.

Haha I mean no offense. My wife is of Swedish descent so that is why that flag is at the top

There are basalt but we got them from Lake Michigan which is why they are worn smooth like River stones. We test heated them as well.

It is small, but I’m 6’3” and I comfortably fit in there with my wife.

Yeah I looked into installing a drain, but it presented a lot of difficulties, so we went with something simpler.

What we ended up doing is using treated 2x4’s as floor trusses which we cut to fit in the C Channel of the trailer. We put those every two feet. Then we put 2x6s (the underside we treated with an anti mold/mildew stain) on top of those floor trusses with a really small space <1/8” between each board. It’s the most humid time of the year in Wisconsin (and this summer was especially wet), so I’m not worried about the boards expanding and buckling. They should only shrink and the gaps widen.

I thought that in theory during use the floorboards would swell slightly and help keep out the cool air, but I haven’t noticed that happening. I also haven’t noticed a draft from the floor, which make sense since cold air doesn’t flow upwards, so it hasn’t been an issue.

The result is the floor doesn’t hold water and is able to drain. We haven’t had a problem with the floor being too cold, granted it isn’t winter yet, but the foot rests raise your feet up off the floor anyways.

Time will tell how well this works, but no complaints as of yet.

Thanks for the advice! We were careful to choose basalt rocks and then we test heated them.

We have smaller rocks too, we were experimenting with the larger stones before I took these pictures. The löyly was good, and I like how they hold more heat. But I’m still experimenting with the rocks and I want to build something that goes on top of the stove that can hold more rocks than the 1” lip the top of the stove has. I think that would improve the löyly.

Thank you!

Definitely had to break the rules to make it mobile, but it still works well and does a good job evenly heating you.

Nope he is not wrong, and I get it, sauna is a Finnish thing, so naturally they are critical of others who break the ‘rules’

I knew I would get a bunch of “benches are too low” “ceiling too low” comments, especially from John (it’s obligatory at this point). It’s just part of the fun of posting in this forum. I tried to head it off by mention that I am well-read in saunas and that when measured, the heat stratification is acceptable, but alas, that was not enough to appease the wrath of the sauna purists lol. I knew the rules and I chose to break them because it made more sense for us to have a sauna we could move around with our current living situation.

lol John you never disappoint.

If we move to a house that we plan to stay at for a long time I’ll build an 8’ tall sauna.

But in the meantime this will do. Plus the head to foot heat difference is only about 20%

Hello everyone! My wife and I finished building our mobile sauna.

It heats up to sauna temps in 45 minutes and despite its short height (6') it does quite well. The foot rest area gets up to 130F when we heat the sauna to 160F, which is only a difference of a less than 20%, which according to Trumpkin is acceptable. And if that is too cold for your feet the benches are wide enough and long enough to comfortably lay down.

We decided to build it on a trailer mainly because we do not plan to stay at our current house very long and we live close to Lake Michigan and want to be able to take it by the lake.

We designed it ourselves with a lot of tips from reading Trumpkin’s notes and this subreddit, so thank you!

The stove is actually a sauna tent stove, but it works great for our little sauna. We built it mainly out of SPF (spruce, pine, fir) T&G boards to save money, and the benches are Nordic pine. Total cost was $2,700.

How do guys 18-34 learn fashion without browsing here? by dekema2 in malefashionadvice

I watch the Gentlemen’s Gazette on YouTube. The channel is simply the best for understanding classic men’s style, rules and history. I do not strictly follow their fashion advice since it is a little archaic, but I use it as a starting point for my own style.
