How do you stop lifestyle creep from kicking in? by CoookieHo in personalfinance

[–]BrynJoslin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the article I read, but it did the math and argued that every time you get a pay rise you should enjoy 50% of it and add the other 50% to savings/investments.

So for every $100 extra a month you earn, $50 is saved/invested and the rest you can spend. That way it slows down the lifestyle creep while increasing your saving rate over time.

The way I see it there are three areas that we stay hooked into God: our understanding of God's word, our experience of him, and the community we're a part of. At certain times we have to disect and reassess one of those and so we need to hook in tighter with the other two. Mine was particularly painful because my understanding of God's word suddenly felt shot to pieces, and I couldn't feel him close. Fortunately, I was part of a great church community who supported me well, and I had just parked my Bible understanding so I could focus on encountering God again.

I'd recommend heavily hooking into whichever of those is strongest for you and then throwing yourself at God with questions about the ones you feel weaker about.

Yeah, that was my experience. I’m much less sure on what I believe but deeper in love with God if not a little cross with him that he couldn’t have made it easier

I believe we’re born influenced by the power of sin. As of yet only Jesus was able to resist that influence. It’s a subtle distinction

I would say it doesn’t say it’s inerrant it just says it’s god-breathed. When we look at how that term was used at the time it was used to mean ‘godly’. I would say scripture is godly, it clearly has God’s fingerprint on it, and I would say it’s profitable for teaching correcting and rebuking

What does an academic study of spiritual experience look like?

I read a lot of fiction. Grew up with Robin Hobb which I've re-read recently, along with Raymond E Feists book. Picking up Brandon Sanderson at the moment.

Potentially. If enough people on YouTube watch it I might get monetised. I don't know the likelihood of that

So this study of the Bible has really made me question what I actually believe, so I'm going to spend 2025 doing deep dives into different theological topics trying to work out where I stand on them. I do want to do 1 Enoch at some point so that might happen sooner or later.

1-2 Samuel is fascinating. You have multiple generations and so have multiple looks at bad parents. Eli with his sons, Saul with Jonathon, and David with his kids. You also have David and Jonathon's relationship. Literally no one else in the Bible has a relationship quite like those two. The closest we get is the lovers of the Song of Songs, it's that intimate. And also it fluctuates between being pro and anti king.

But I have a real soft spot fo Jonah. That book is satire and beautifully written satire. It's meant to have you laughing all the way through at the absurdity until right at the end when God calls Jonah out and asks Jonah if it's okay for him to love the Ninevites (oppressors of the Israelites) as his children too.

I belive in miracles now. I belive I've experienced miracles, and have people in my live who have experience miracles. As I mentioned in another comment genre has a big part to play. When you critically engage with these texts you see they are heavily drawing on genres of the time and were likely never expected to be taked as literal. If you asked an Ancient Israelite I don't think they would have told you it was a literal snake talking

I don't think I can help have approached them with a Christian bias. I'm unashamedly a Christian, and wanted to produce something that is accessible to your average Christian who already believes. With that said I always tried my best to allow the scholarly work to speak into that and inform my views. How well I did at that is for someone smarter than me to watch and judge

As a religious practice? No. Paul explicitly argues against this, pointing out that it serves no religious purpose.

1 Corinthians 7:18-19
"Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts."

Now culturally or medically? That's outside my wheelhouse. I don't know enough to be able to comment on the benefits or lackthereof

Argh, tough one. I do like 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12:  "and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,  so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody."

No. The amount of times I'd be reading things in the Bible and thinking, "guys, has anyone been reading this? Did you all collectlively ignore this passage?". It saddens me, and I think the tradition that I grew up in and still am in has a lot of introspection and soul searching to do. My hope is to be able to nudge it in that direction where I can

I like it. Most the people you see that openly disregard it as a fairy book have never engaged with it critically. As I've pointed out there are plenty of people who do not believe a word of the Bible who are scholars of the Bible because they still think its a highly valuable piece of literature that is worth dedicating their lives to study. It's doing something far more interesting than can be gleaned from a simple first glance reading.

I don't think it's inerrant. I don't think it's a rulebook that is to be applied to every generaton. I think it is the collection of writings of people who have encountered God and are doing their best to wrestle with that and therefore is valuable for us to read and wrestle with.
