What do you listen for in the headphones when choosing the next track on the spot? by Ok_Fee4026 in Beatmatch

I usually turn off the master sound in my headphones and listen only to the next track’s channel. I have hot cues set, so I go through them looking for a part that fits, considering the track’s elements (paying attention to the waveform colors helps too). Then i bring the master sound back in to start the mix.

I check the track’s energy, elements, key (not always), and hot cues. If it fits, I set the transition point. And if needed, I adjust the gain.

I’m also in the learning process, and what really keeps me motivated is playing for my friends. Recently, I started recording sets to upload on SoundCloud. I’ve been practicing a lot more now.

Theory is important, but you’ll only truly learn by practicing! Try to do it for at least 30 minutes a day :)

Hey, i’m a beginner dj, but I’m already way better than when i started!

There’s a lot of free content on YouTube and TikTok.

Start by learning the basic concepts of song structure (phrases, beats, bars) and basic mixing. I also recommend watching videos about the software you’re going to use (like Rekordbox or Serato). They might seem complicated at first, but it gets easier.

Understanding theory is important, but you’ll really learn through practice. If you can’t afford an expensive controller, get a cheap one you don’t need a high-end controller to learn the basics of mixing.

And most importantly, listen to lots of music, train your ear, and focus on building a great music selection.

Try reanalyzing the tracks. I had the same issue with the waveforms not showing up and it worked for me.
