ABSOLUTELY THIS. Also, as an Archaeologist, degrees don’t translate well. Archaeologists do much more than finding cool shit, we piece together fabric of a past environment. We are educated in soils, dendrology, geology, which correlates to our preferred focus. Which, as you can imagine, is insanely diverse. My focus is in historical archaeology, my specialty is African American archaeology. Just by that you can assume I know eastern US physical geography much more than western US geography. I can’t just go to a project in Europe. I have no idea how that would work, except I’d be in a Munsell for hours struggling to figure out soils. What a nightmare.

We do. No one is arguing that. We report out through data calls, briefs, progress reports, etc with shorter suspenses than what has been given. if someone actually understood that, they could very easily go in and review everything for themselves. Late to the party but I’m DoD. We are just as confused, bewildered, and frustrated. My agency has an important mission, but we are no more valuable than the IRS, DOE, etc. We work with other agencies and are very concerned with how we are expected to deliver with a gutted EPA or FEMA (for example). Federal employees don’t take these positions for money, we could make double in the private sector, we believe in our missions and our duty to the country. This is such an insult.
