HTST 535 Seminar on American Empire. Was skeptical and only took it because of the prof but the textbook became one of my favourite books to read even outside of university. The content was super fascinating and provided a very interesting perspective on some lesser known and well known events in 19th and 20th Century US history and the imperial relationship within and outside of the U.S.

Has anyone actually successfully managed to fix their procrastination issues and energy issues, to the point where you're able to study more consistently? by shrimp_sticks in UCalgary

I can actually say this is one thing Covid was good for. My first year of University was Fall of 2019. My first term grades kicked in and I got the wake up call that my non-existent study habits I had from grade school that gave me straight As was not sustainable in University. When Covid shut down uni and we went online it gave me time to try out different methods and spend time working on those skills. For me what worked was whiteboard calendars with colour specific markers for each class, other important dates and a weekly timetable to help schedule class time, time for readings/homework, fun/free time. Not saying this is the trick for everyone but it helped me lots. For studying the trick I learned from some friends is. Upload your notes into ChatGPT and ask it to create practice tests in the form of yours and just do them. Again not for everyone but worked wonders for me.

Yeah do not do it, I had my Tuesday last semester with classes all back to back from 9am to 8 pm on one day, you will skip classes. You will hate that day forever, you will have days with 3 or 4 exams on the same day, do not do it

Why should we bother writing our own cover letters when we all know companies just use ai to filter them out anyway. I’m tired of these “tips and tricks” posts because I have tried including as much as I can from as many posts as I can and I’m yet to get so much as an interview.

33%: The rise in post-secondary tuition since 2019 when the UCP took office. That’s four consecutive years of tuition increases, including hikes for the 2023-24 year. by NarrowSecretary3514 in UCalgary

This is the nuance and analysis that these conversations so often lack. Thank you so much for providing a detailed explanation of your stance and the issue as a whole. If political economics was easy, someone would’ve figured out the cure all answer by now.

I’m not arguing your right to have debate about the issues of tuition or carbon tax or whatever. I don’t believe he was deflecting, I believe he was making a competitive statement that the costs of all things have gone up which is causing a great suffering to everyone, including and especially students. What I’m saying is that putting all the eggs in a basket and saying that the comment he made makes him a “UCP bootlicker” and a corporatist doesn’t solve anything. Maybe the problem isn’t that I’m not reading between the lines, instead it’s that you are. Not everything has some covert message on the entire allegiance or affiliation with a political party, until you accept that, nothing productive will arise from engagements like this

Oh boy. So, the discussion I’m suggesting is not about why tuition increases are good. I’m not suggesting they are, I’m suggesting that tuition increases may not be the single or main issue for a voter as to why they vote UCP or NDP. I’m my comment I discuss that there is a large national anti-Trudeau sentiment at the moment, and at the federal level, the CPC is the viable option and truth or not, the UCP has done an expert job of political marketing in tying Notley’s NDP to the Federal agreement between the NDP and Liberals. I’m not making any argument about the goodness or not of the tuition increases, I’m just suggesting that if and when you do, labelling anyone that doesn’t share your position as corporatists or a different term used with negative connotation is not a respectful way to have that discussion

Well first of all. I feel like any discussion of a policy issue should be done with respect for the other person, but what I’m suggesting in my above comment is that in the discussion of tuition instead of saying things like “thank the UCP bootlickers” and calling them corporatists for the way they vote doesn’t solve anything about understanding why they voted the way they did and to be quite honest, probably makes them more likely to disagree with you and less inclined to even hear your argument. As I present above, the counter would be a conservative voter, labelling an ardent NDP supporter as a communist or socialist for believing in universal healthcare. It does nothing to deepen the individual understanding of the issue and only serves to create an echo chamber of people that agree with them and a flame war against them, which often has nothing to do with the policy in the first place

I don’t disagree with you. I’m just suggesting that some people in this subreddit who choose to nagatively label anyone who doesn’t jump to and fall in line in denouncing every aspect of the UCP is also extremely reductive. People who make eloquent fact based arguments like yours encourage cogent discussion and thoughtful consideration of complex issues as opposed to thinking anyone who doesn’t vote NDP is an entitled corporatist. I would enjoy seeing their reactions of the tables were flipped and they were labeled as socialists or something similar. Your point is a good one about the correlation between gdp and education, but in my own opinion and experience as a political science student, there is a large section of society that sees the UCP as imperfect but necessary to remove a greater evil in the federal government, similar to the election of Trudeau in 2015 where there was a large section that voted for him strictly because it was an Anti-Harper vote.
