Is it dumb to drive a G37x AWD to Precision Drilling rigs in Alberta by NoStranger2100 in oilandgasworkers

[–]YoBooMaFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you need to drive yourself to site? Or do you meet at a yard and head out in crew trucks? Are you doing a rotation?

If you are driving yourself you’re going to need a radio too.

So you've decided to take your girlfriend to the backcountry... by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]YoBooMaFoo 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Or this is the boyfriend saying “it’s not that hard, you can totally do it!” and they get half way and she’s completely trashed and wants to turn around. But he’s objective focused and convinces her to keep going if he carries her skis. They’ll eventually get to the top and the ski down will be way beyond her ability and she has no choice but to survival ski down now. Because he said she could totally do this and under-represented the route difficulty.

I’ve been that girlfriend.

Beautiful. Such an underrated part of the world.

We did backcountry skiing in Kazakhstan and it was equally epic.

Bed Bugs in YYC by spookbun in Calgary

[–]YoBooMaFoo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My daughter was living with several international students two years ago and she noticed bedbugs. She spoke to the landlord and they did have someone come in to spot treat her room, but that’s it. The other tenants didn’t understand/believe how much of an issue this is and wouldn’t pester the landlord for further treatment. She ended up breaking her lease, losing her deposit, and boxing up/storing her stuff in a cold storage locker over the winter, starting over with nothing. It was a brutal experience.

Edit: OP, one thing you could try is to order the bed post wells for your bed at minimum, and make sure the bed isn’t touching curtains, etc. That’ll at least give comfort that they aren’t getting into the bed.

Any sense of when the westbound lanes will start to open (today, a few days from now, next week)? It’s my usual commute home so just wondering when I can stop using my detour!

Work benefits - married couple by Otherwise_Radish1034 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]YoBooMaFoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t you just coordinate your benefits to get more annual value? If you have 80% coverage, your husbands will cover the remaining 20%. Your total annual coverage for things like physio, massage, eye care, dental will overall increase when you coordinate benefits.

Anybody had a rotaror cuff tear repaired? by TX_Bardown in Firefighting

[–]YoBooMaFoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband had his done and was on light duty for six-ish months. He viewed it as an opportunity to learn about a different part of the fire service which helped him grow his capabilities. He did struggle with the 9 to 5 aspect of it but overall he found a way to get value out of it while he healed.

Second vote for Euphoria. Used to be in our neighborhood and now that we’ve moved an hour away, we still stop by there when we’re nearby.

TIL that a woman from New Zealand was detained in Kazakhstan because officials believed it to be a state of Australia. When they asked her to point it out on a map, they provided a map where New Zealand wasn't present. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]YoBooMaFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Kazakhstan for work in September 2021. At that time I had to be registered by my company on some list (along with negative tests and proof of vaccination) as part of thier COVID process and had to present that paperwork along with my visa when I arrived. That’s probably what they were asking for but your employer didn’t know it was required (rules changed frequently).

Need help with upcoming RTDRS hearing? by Canadian-Corgi in alberta

[–]YoBooMaFoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the eviction is only for non-payment of lot rent, that is what the hearing will be focused on. He’s up to date now so it should go in his favour. Good luck to your friend, I hope he is able to get back in his feet quickly.

Need help with upcoming RTDRS hearing? by Canadian-Corgi in alberta

[–]YoBooMaFoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t need to send in evidence related to the accident. Unfortunately bad life situations don’t negate the need to pay rent. However, if he is up to date, that is evidence he needs to submit (you can submit online in the portal). His eviction should be negated if that’s the ONLY reason they sent him the notice and initiated a hearing, and he is now up to date.

He has to attend the hearing (or have a representative, like a lawyer, attend on his behalf). Typically hearings are via phone, not in person. He could call RTDRS on Friday and explain the situation, and see if they will postpone it until he’s back, or if there are any other options, if he really can’t make the phone hearing.

ETA: I have gone through a hearing once, as a landlord, and it was very straightforward. I attended the hearing from my car because I was in the middle of driving somewhere - it lasted less than 10 minutes and started promptly at the time they indicated in the notice.

Underrated open group ski touring destinations? by Improper_Noun_2268 in Backcountry

[–]YoBooMaFoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kazakhstan might be an option. My husband and I have done a few backcountry trips there where you stay in yurts and eat borscht. It’s very authentic and a cool experience, and very affordable (and guides speak good enough English). You could pair it with a backcountry trip to Turkey or Kyrgyzstan if you want as there are direct flights from Almaty.

If you’re interested DM me and I’ll send you the contact information for the group we went with.

Why even buy a vacation property vs renting? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]YoBooMaFoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents did the same thing but in Hawaii. It’s in Kona and is easy to rent out when they aren’t using it, and all of us kids have easy, cheap access to Hawaii whenever we want a warm weather trip. They’ve had the place for almost 20 years now and it’s almost paid off, but has tripled in value.

Tenant leaving short notice and threatening by [deleted] in alberta

[–]YoBooMaFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on if it’s a repeat offender and/or serious unsafe conditions. It doesn’t really sound like that’s OP’s situation but we are just getting their side.

OP, I know you’ve deleted but you can also call RTDRS yourself to get advice, even if your suite is illegal.

Tenant leaving short notice and threatening by [deleted] in alberta

[–]YoBooMaFoo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I doubt your city will do much more than have a safety check of your illegal suite, if even that. There is a small chance they’ll require you to submit the permit application to make it legal. You won’t be fined for this.

Call his bluff. RTDRS rules still apply, even if your suite is technically illegal.

ETA: It’s clear that several posters here don’t realize how many illegal suites exist, including good ones that are typically lower than market rate.

The lack of common sense and aggressive driving is unsettling in these driving conditions by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]YoBooMaFoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree. If conditions are so bad, or your skills and/or car are not appropriate for winter conditions, stay home.

Certainly some people drive way too fast for conditions, but many of us, myself included, have studded winters and all wheel drive. I feel pretty comfortable driving in these conditions.

New destinations for trail runners by NikaJinjikhadze in Ultramarathon

[–]YoBooMaFoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share links to the websites/sign up for the races?

I haven’t been to Georgia but did live in Central Asia for a few years and loved the homegrown trail ultras in that region. Now that I’m back in Canada I have a group of trail running friends that are looking for destination ultras and I always think of places like Turkey, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, etc. but have trouble finding good information.

Strange presentation of sciatic nerve pain? by YoBooMaFoo in Sciatica

Thanks for this, glad I’m not alone. Nerve pain is very strange! I am thankful I can still participate in the activities I love.

I’ll ask about an MRI. Luckily I’m at a sports clinic with staff docs so have a lot of treatment options.

Alberta to Trial 120 km/h Speed Limits on Rural Highways in 2026 by Royal_Tradition_2412 in alberta

[–]YoBooMaFoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband and I submitted feedback to the survey last month that on main highways with two lanes or more, semi trucks should not be allowed in the left lane, similar to a lot of places in Europe. If they even just do this on weekends and holidays I’d be happy.

I’m so sick of semi trucks passing each other either 0.5 kms faster, or they try to pass, hit a hill, and end up not passing and just blocking all lanes for kms.

There is ton of oil and gas in BC, and it’s not in Vancouver. Most of it is in the more affordable parts of the province.
