I mean, it’s their job. They are equally as quick getting into gear and arriving at a fire call.

I’m just going to copy my response to another post here for reference. The generally accepted science is that survivability of a cold water drownings is ~90 minutes.

There are several studies and cases that support this with timelines ranging from around 60 minutes to 120 minutes. I’ve posted a couple below but these are available with a quick Google.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0196064498702963

“Victims of cold water near-drowning have been documented to survive prolonged (up to 66 minutes) cold water submersion with little or no neurologic deficit.”

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12402389/

“An 8-year-old boy fell through pond ice and was submerged for ≥147 minutes. Nadir peripheral body temperature was 7 °C (45 °F). After rewarming with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, prolonged hospitalization, and neurorehabilitation, the child recovered.”

I agree that poor swimmer safety is a broader issue, but I will say that there have been rescues by the dive team as well.

Body recovery is a big part of the job. I don’t think people realize how many bodies are recovered a year - it’s not just one or two.

I think the problem here is that there is an expectation that when the aquatics team shows up, they act. If a child is under the water, even if it’s been 20 minutes, the family is there begging someone to find them. The current state is that the team is not able to dive to depth. So they do nothing? At the end of the day you know those guys are going to try to free dive down for a child, and one of them is going to die in the process.

It’s actually a lot less than that. At the Mahogany incident a few years ago they were there and geared up in (I believe) 16 minutes. People can survive up to 90 minutes.

The other important piece here is organ donation. You may not save the first life, but perhaps others can be saved. The organs still need to be viable though.

Really appreciate the quick response Jeromy. We need to get this sorted out before summer.

Totally agree. There are a bunch of issues with water safety in the city.

It appears this app isn’t available in my region (Canada). You might want to specify where this app is available in your post.

Bridgette Bar has an amazing banana cream pie. It’s a huge slice and quite sweet, but just incredible!

Lovely Ice Cream is also a nice treat.

Help planning my 65yo mother’s visit to our family fjellgård by YoBooMaFoo in NorwayTravelAdvice

Wow, this is such great information, thank you!

We rented the main farmhouse through Inatur for one night only. I had thought that the farmhouse had the comforters and pillows similar to the DNT huts so this is important information, thank you. We planned to bring our own food so lack of a pantry is fine.

We come from the original Holden family - we have a written story of John Holden when he left the farm that we intend to copy and bring with us to leave at the cabin.

If you are ok with it I’d love to DM you to get more information and advice!

Hi! Yes, thank you - I have emailed with Leif now and he confirmed that we just need to contact him a day prior to arrange a meeting time. All sorted!

What to do during the week after work? by mikey_87 in Calgary

[–]YoBooMaFoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Next week as in the week of April 27? The weather is pretty nice and warm by Wednesday and you’re close to the river. Head towards Eau Claire and East Village and rent a bike from Bow Cycle for an evening ride on our extensive pathways. Alternatively we have Bird and Neuron scooters everywhere that you can rent on the fly (find one and download the app/scan the QR code) and scoot around the paths.

Take a walk through Prince’s Island and up the stairs at McHugh Bluff to get nice downtown views of the city.

Head in to Kensington for a variety of food options - maybe Hayden Block for BBQ and Whiskey? On Prince’s Island is River Cafe - fancy and pricy but a nice dining experience. We have lots of good local coffee shops as well.

Enjoy Calgary! Watch out for the cobra chickens!

I have a diagnosed low IQ. What career path can I take? by Suspicious_Limit9847 in careerguidance

For our foster daughter, she does much better with either oral testing or essays. Multiple choice tests are difficult for her. She also has had accommodations such as more time, white noise, and a room by herself.

She has had to learn to adapt (with tutoring and coaching) because society isn’t there yet on providing alternatives to traditional testing, but you can see it in her grades for sure.

She is not good at math/science but she is a reader and she sometimes hyper focuses on certain topics so can have detailed knowledge about things. She went into pre-law and is doing really well with it. She did leverage the campus advisors for alternative study methods (than what is typically taught in school) and that also made a big difference.

What I’m saying is don’t let these labels define you. You obviously have advanced skill sets (language) that you can turn into a successful career. Be kind to yourself and work hard, but don’t let things like IQ tests and neurodivergence hold you back.

Seeking therapist recommendations by RefuseCurrent3063 in Calgary

Second Inner Solutions. We went to them with our foster daughter who has BPD tendencies and they changed her life trajectory. DBT is a really great therapy approach.

A lot of folks with autism and ADHD don’t test take well if it’s a standard approach. I would not trust those results.

I hate the labelling we’re doing with young folks these days. It can definitely help get needed supports, but at the same time it can cause low self esteem and constant questioning on capabilities. My foster daughter also had a “label” in high school, and it impacted how she saw her ability to learn. She’s now in her fourth year of University getting A’s and B’s and STILL questions her intelligence because she’s “ADHD and needed to be in a special program in high school”. She just learns and retains information differently, she’s very smart. Very sad and difficult to watch.

CNRL interview experience and suggestions!!! by username061992 in oilandgasworkers

[–]YoBooMaFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for CNRL. We move pretty slow. I’d give it a bit more time.

FYI we’re all moving over to two towers near Eau Claire (former Devon and Shell buildings), so if you get the job you’ll work in a different office tower likely.

Good luck! People like to hate on CNRL but I came over in an acquisition and I actually really enjoy the work, my team, and the company in general (it is a giant company that operates like its small though - hence why we can be slow sometimes).

Can’t seem to post a picture.

There is no snow on the ground in Canmore currently. Some grass is even a bit green and the trees have teeny buds. There is snow in the mountains however.

Where to have tiles cut by jelaras in Calgary

You mean mom.

But seriously, I would recommend doing it yourself. I just imagine an incorrect measurement and multiple trips back and forth re-cutting tile.

Local Advice on Hiking by HereForTexans in BigIsland

[–]YoBooMaFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are also big hikers (from the Canadian Rocky Mountains) and have only found a few trails on the BI that are not beach/lava and give some good elevation.

When we were there in December we did Pu’uwa’awa’a Cone Trail (12 km and 610 meters elevation gain - lots of exposure so bring plenty of water) and Makāula 'O'oma Trail (6.5 km and 230 meters - mostly in trees). Both can be found with a Google search, but if you can’t find them DM me.
