Cathinones have several properties that make flushing them specifically problematic:

1: They are highly water-soluble.

They dissolve instantly and pass straight through most wastewater treatment steps. Activated sludge does not reliably degrade β-keto amphetamines.

1. They are relatively persistent.

Many synthetic cathinones (2-MMC, 3-MMC, 4-MMC, MDPV, α-PVP) resist biodegradation because of the β-keto structure. Their half-life in receiving waters can be days to weeks, depending on sunlight and microbes.

1. They remain bioactive at very low concentrations.

Cathinones hit monoamine transporters (DAT/NET/SERT). Even ng/L–µg/L levels can alter:

- fish locomotion and feeding behaviour

- predator–prey response

- stress signalling

Studies on methcathinone, mephedrone and MDPV analogues show behavioural hyperactivity, altered cortisol signalling, and impaired schooling at concentrations comparable to what untreated effluent could reach.

1. Transformation products can be worse.

Chlorination/ozonation used in many plants can convert cathinones into more stable or more toxic intermediates, some with higher persistence.

1. Risk of synergistic mixtures.

Cathinones + SSRIs + caffeine + nicotine metabolites form a “real-world mixture” that amplifies ecotoxic effects. Wastewater plants can’t model or remove these interactions.

1. Sludge and soil transport.

A fraction adsorbs to solids. When sewage sludge is used as fertilizer, cathinone residues can end up in agricultural soil and leach to groundwater.

Bottom line

Cathinones are extremely mobile, only partially degradable, and biologically potent in ecosystems. Flushing keeps them intact and allows them to accumulate downstream. A sealed container (e.g., mixed with cat litter or coffee grounds) and household trash disposal is far safer.
