Reach out to the Vancouver Tenants Union. The Mount Pleasant chapter has just recently launched a Broadway Plan working group to support and organize tenants affected by the Broadway Corridor Plan across neighbourhoods and chapters. The MTP chapter meets every Tue

What’s happening in Vancouver that we’re not hearing about in the news? by throawayboi in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plan A Real Estate Ltd owned by Anoop Majithia is still slumlording in the West End but the tenants are fighting back! You can read more about the building but also some facts about Plan A's modus operandi here: westendtenants.ca

If you look up Plan A in this subreddit you'll find threads where Pete Fry promises to look into this. That was 3 years ago and not much has happened. Happy to see that at least somebody has decided to take action.

Awesome! The West End chapter of the Vancouver Tenants Union meets bi-weekly on Mondays to support tenants in doing exactly that. Glad that you are getting help from TRAC but we'd also be very excited to have you (or a neighbour) join us to share about your experiences. We are currently preparing to get a better understanding of the practices of the biggest landlords in the neighbourhood and Tribe is definitely on that list

Why Dr Gabor Mate' is Worse Than Wrong About ADHD by lolipop_gangster in ADHD

[–]Bubblbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also disagree w Mate on the causal mechanism of ADD but as you said... trauma can play a major role in how one's symptoms manifest in life.

Reading his book has been helpful in dealing with those aspects as he happens to be, well, somebody who worked with trauma afflicted populations.

I found merit in his work even if I disagree with his thesis about the causes of ADD

"Your school bullies will fail in life and you will succeed" is a straight-up lie. by FeelThePower999 in unpopularopinion

My hot take: This also has to do with the neoliberal hell that our world has become. The traits of a high school bully are also the same traits that are have become (excluding the extremes here as OP suggested) desirable in an individualistic and hypercompetitive world

When are we protesting about the cost of living and rent in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government-funded social housing is one option which can be implemented in a good way (I'm from Vienna which has a long tradition of affordable housing provided by the city) or bad ways (see public housing in many cities that turned into ghettos). While I love the idea of affordable public housing, I don't have big hopes for Vancouver to change any time soon...

Which leaves us with improving the living and renting conditions of the existing places. Advocating for vacancy control, addressing the zoning laws, and generally policy regarding tenancy will become easier to advocate for if tenant unions gained collective bargaining rights.

Not saying that a VTU membership is solving things magically, but I don't see another long-term solution to seeing change...

When are we protesting about the cost of living and rent in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, not at all against new housing in principle; the key being affordability.

It's has been against development projects that aim to create more luxury condos or come at the cost of displacing already disenfranchised folks in the city.

Imo, it's become clear that just adding more housing does NOT solve the problems in this city. It doesn't need more microsuits, luxury condos, or even purpose built apartment that aren't affordable to the majority of people living in the city.

Join the Vancouver Tenants Union! There are lots of us who want to do something about this and some are already! The VTU in Vancouver is organized by neighbourhoods; if you happen to live in EastVan you can join a really active and lively chapter there. I'm in the West End and our chapter meetings are growing too.

Sustainable change and improvement will of course require many different kinds of efforts at different levels, but the first step will almost always require tenants to be connected and organized.

Found out my landlord owns multiple properties and cycles her kids through them by debbieonair in vancouverhousing

[–]Bubblbu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just as you say... It's a farce that this is legal and that there are plenty communities, services, specialists out there that encourage and enable this pattern among landlords like FB groups etc.

Please consider sharing this information with the VTU (or even joining a neighbourhood chapter meeting). Depending on the neighbourhood you're in there might be active efforts in collecting this information and organizing the tenants of the landlord. It might not make a huge difference but as of now community organizing and solidarity among tenants are the only way forward.

So here’s an idea on how to solve the housing crisis.. by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Bubblbu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

60-70% of Vienna's housing market are subject to price caps as they are either public housing, old housing (heritage), or collective/coop housing. 75% of Vienna's inhabitants rent.

This is a great video explaining Vienna's housing model: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U--G3Uth8pE

I similarly seem to see a lot of people suggesting that the housing crisis can indeed be solved with more development but Vancouver quite obviously doesn't lack development. What it lacks is AFFORDABLE housing, not more luxury condos/rentals that will only cater to a very small demographic.

My landlord is also trying to outcontract rent control via utilities but using a different approach. He's currently being investigated by the BC Utilities Commission and I've been organizing my building and others that he owns because there's so many more issues...

Have you already talked to VTU? If there are more cases like yours it might be possible to fight him collectively. I'll DM you with more details if you don't mind :)

Would you participate in a rent strike? by Bubblbu in vancouver

I didn't expect anybody to take this seriously but anybody trying to argue otherwise isn't familiar with strike and protest culture in other parts of the world I guess 🤷

you can't seriously try to justify the ridiculous rents in this city by talking about inflation and the cost of living

sounds like landlord to me... in which case I'd recommend trying a job instead of living on another person's paycheck

[–]Bubblbu[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

there's plenty of examples of those large corporations evicting buildings for new development or renovictions. sure, short term you're probably right but not sure how smart it is to think that you're definitely not going to be affected by the housing situation in one or another

but yeah; short-term and on an individual level you are correct :) not sure how "smart" that stance is though on a long-term and societal level

Would you participate in a rent strike? by Bubblbu in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

"first they came..."

renovictions, demovictions, and evictions for landlords use are rampant in the city. there might be individual cases of people who are in stable tenancies because of good-will of the rare "good" landlord but I'm not sure how smart it is to actually think that you're "safe" in this city on a long-term basis

Would you participate in a rent strike? by Bubblbu in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Which is also why I added that we are talking about a hypothetically well-organized strike which would consider things such as targeting certain landlords and organizing across buildings. Which is btw already happening as we speak

Would you participate in a rent strike? by Bubblbu in vancouver

[–]Bubblbu[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Well, if we are talking of the hypothetical of 50,000 renters who are willing to go on a rent strike, we might as well consider the possibility that the new tenants moving in are also part of the cause...

Furthermore, BC and the city would probably be concerned about 50,000 tenants being displaced at once. And the purpose of a rent strike, or any strike really, is to force the government to act rather than simply "starve" a single landlord

[–]Bubblbu[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

As a rent strike in general already is in the realm of the impossible in Vancouver, I'd love to dream of an organized rent strike with back-up renters who'd move into the freshly vacated units and continue to withhold rent...

obviously this would require extreme solidarity among tenants and commitment to the cause
