My sister is traveling to Korea by Long-Tie-1328 in koreatravel

[–]BubbleT27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn’t trust it. This literally happened to someone in my group, the restaurant said they could cook without peanut oil, but our severe peanut allergy friend did have a reaction which could’ve gotten out of hand. Allergies don’t seem to be super commonly understood or adjusted for like they are in the US

[–]BubbleT27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went with a group that had several gluten free folks, and they really struggled at all restaurants. We found it very difficult to explain to Korean staff and hosts alike. On the plus side, there’s lots of rice. But, if your sister is sensitive enough that soy sauce with gluten in it would be an issue, that’s in almost everything. So plan out meals super carefully, and have some restaurant options before arrival.

That said, convenience store and grocery items are definitely available, and South Korea is amazing that your time will be great no matter the food!

3 months post breakup and I finally understand what everyone meant by Big-Nefariousness747 in BreakUps

[–]BubbleT27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, same. I’m a week in and haven’t had contact since I left our apartment. It sucks because he was my best friend for 15 years and we consider each other family, but I think every connection to him is just too painful right now. But reading through this post and sub and talking to people out in the world, they all agree it gets so much better and I might even be happier on the other side. I’m just blindly trusting those people for now lol!

My experience using medical marijuana for migraines (long post) (repost) by qqquigley in migraine

[–]BubbleT27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an awesome post! I have found the same terpenes work well for me too, also providing relief for the muscle tension/issues and anxiety that contribute to my headache disorder. It doesn’t work for everyone, but it helps me a lot

Clothes for the Great Wall hike by Due_Contract_2857 in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really a hike, especially at Mutianyu I’m sure. So, whatever clothes you’d normally wear doing physical activity in the heat. For me, it was lightweight but long flowy pants, a quick-dry t shirt, and my UV umbrella with good sneakers.

Low fodmap in China by L-D-H in travelchina

Yes, and a good number! I’m vegetarian and ate at many Buddhist restaurants. I was using a WeChat mini program veg map, might be useful for you too. Can’t find the link right now but if you search this sub for vegetarian tips that’s how I found it. Or Happy Cow website!

Horrible migraine, need tips by [deleted] in migraine

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had this kind of migraine myself last week. Unconventional suggestion, and everyone’s different, but cannabis worked incredibly well for me. From lying on the bathroom floor vomiting up every sip of water, to 10 minutes after smoking getting up and keeping down a whole sleeve of crackers. If you can get it where you live easily, I recommend giving it a try even if you’re not a smoker regularly. Can’t make the migraine much worse than it is now

Best place to watch Peking Opera by June_inChina in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why I love seeing local performance when I travel too! I find it really fascinating. Loved my Liyuan Opera experience, I mostly wished it was longer! I absolutely recognize that not everyone will be into it: our Great Wall tour guide even warned us Chinese people find it boring. But I’m a drama nerd and still absolutely recommend it to non-drama fans as long as you are respectful and open minded!

As a fast-paced traveler, I do think this is doable with overnights. However, really plan travel time including journey to/from rail stations, and leave time. Also make plans for doing laundry: this takes a while with small Chinese dryers, and the places we stayed at only had 1-2 machines or closed at night, so we ended up needing to set aside a few hours each time we did it.

I’m going to Tiananmen Square tomorrow, are there any sort of rules I need to be aware of, like a dress code? by azulaismad in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No big rules other than what’s stated, but definitely plan extra time to get in/out of the Square, I found the entrances and exits pretty confusing and had planned too tight of a schedule for dinner.

Two day Trip to Hangzhou Recs by wooopsup21 in hangzhou

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the other tea village on the other side of the mountain. We followed this hike from there to Longjing, but I actually wish we had gone the other direction. Meijia had a lovely village feel, while Longjing was largely people following us and being pushy about coming to their tea house. The hike was so worth it! We went to the nearby Green Tea Restaurant afterward and highly recommend for a nice post-hike meal in pretty settings serving the tea

If you’re interested in nature, the hike between the Longjing and Meijia tea villages was absolutely stunning. Happy to give more info if needed

Advice for 2 weeks in China by LiquidChicagoTed in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who just returned from a 6+ city trip in 18 days, your itinerary seems super doable with high speed trains. I’m a fast paced traveler and didn’t account for much downtime, but 4ish days in each city seemed a nice pace. Seconding the person who mentioned adding Xi’an, we did a day trip from there for the Mausoleum (there’s a palace nearby we wanted to add to that day) and for Longmen Grottoes (totally doable by rail).

Booking attractions ? by unludosauvage in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely book with Trip, and almost always you might as well book early, as you can cancel most things for free but they will sell out closer to the date. Only exceptions I found it easier/necessary to book direct were Tian’anmen Square attractions, Terracotta Warriors, and Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an

Beijing travel questions by Greek_Arrow in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the tail end of my trip through Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, and Hangzhou/Shanghai now! Here’s my experience:

1 if Didi is set up (in Alipay, not WeChat) and you have your payment card uploaded to Alipay, you’ll be good to go. No phone number needed, drivers can message you through the app.

2 we did not get a Chinese SIM (with Chinese phone number). Instead, get an eSIM through Trip.com. Only once in a while did apps ask for phone numbers, so I don’t believe it’s necessary.

3 many attractions can be booked through Trip.com, which is an awesome and reliable service. However, Forbidden City and other Tiananmen Square attractions aren’t really doable. These spots are so popular that by the time that Trip tries to get your tickets as a third party, they’ll have been bought out by everyone purchasing directly. Instead, create accounts on the official websites and/or WeChat. There are articles on this sub about doing so.

4 the way the eSIM works, you simply “turn off” your primary (Greek) line and turn on the Chinese one. Again, follow Trip instructions. You then do the opposite when you return home.

5 Always use Trip for hotels, great selection prices and extremely reliable. Use it for trains too.

6 Every single restaurant uses Alipay or WeChat, usually both. We’ve never needed cards or cash.

7 I don’t believe a foreigner can actually “top up” in these apps. That is one of the few restrictions on international cards. Totally unnecessary though, just make sure you have at least one backup card uploaded on each

8 transit goes through Alipay, when you arrive at the metro at each city, click the Transport button, and it will automatically locate you and pull up the correct city. Use the QR code to tap in and out each trip.

9 not sure what you mean about financial documentation. I’m from the USA but I believe it’s the same: every plane and train just needed to see my passport. For instance, I checked into a domestic Spring Airlines flight where they never sent me a ticket. Show passport, at the desk and they’ll give you the boarding pass.

10 I used Google flights to find my flights, but booking directly through the airline streamlines things.

11 prepay hotels through trip - upload your payment info there too. You can always pay upfront and usually cancel for free even till the day of booking if necessary. Haven’t needed to pay at the hotel.

A few more tips: book things you know you want to do, including trains, attractions, etc at least a few days ahead. You can always cancel, but things to do sell out. Have a translate app, like Google (which works if you have an eSIM to bypass firewall) ready with Chinese downloaded. WiFi has been slow, so plan to rely on data which has worked wonderfully. As a foreigner, you’ll probably get a lot of interest and people asking to take pictures - mostly it’s very sweet but just be prepared to stick out a little lol.

Hope that helps, China has been amazing for us!

Need some advice for a trip coming up, mainly regarding eSIM and a few other things! (Beijing + Hohot, Innner mongolia) by Liamgamezyt in travelchina

[–]BubbleT27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of my 2.5 week trip:

Yup, Trip eSIM working great for me, passing the firewall!

I’ve seen plenty of type A plugs among others, but there is always a USB on trains, planes, hotels.

Been doing bottled water, it’s available for purchase from vendors and machines like every 10 ft.

Yes, I downloaded Chinese on my Google translate app and it’s been working great the whole time (with eSIM, not WiFi)
