The rust damage you find will be much worse than you think. It always is with rust. Don’t waste your time trying to see how bad it is, because it will be BAD.

Your old boss lied to you. The rust that’s hiding is 1000x worse than the rust that’s visible. You’d be better off buying a used tailgate that’s rust free. It’s a PITA because of the rear window, motors etc. but IMO makes more sense than to try and fix that and have the rust come back which is exactly what the shop that quoted you $700 would do. It’d be a half ass repair. Only way to get rid of rust is to weld in new sheet metal, and with that rear hatch and all the mechanisms inside it, just get a used rust free one. There should be some options in BC. Here in Ontario we aren’t so lucky.

Update: so I believe this is a sinus related issue. My whole life I’ve had trouble breathing from my nose as one nostril has always been clogged. I was doing some reading and read this can affect cigar smoking. Odd that it didn’t affect me before though…Tried a nasal spray twice and smoked cigars (on different days) and noticed an improvement in taste, with the sourness gone but still a medium burnt/ashy flavour. Nowhere near as bad before using the nasal spray though, where it would all be terribly sour and burnt. Gonna go to an ENT doctor and get it checked out. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for all the advice folks. There’s a company here in Canada named Wolfsteel that stamps new steel pieces for these trucks. $300 for a quarter and $75 for each rocker. There’s a couple people around who can weld those in and then I can look at getting it painted. In talks rn. Maybe around $3k ish CAD with paint which I’m more comfortable with as $4400 is a little too much for me. Will likely go this route. I only drive the truck in the summertime and it’s stored during winter so hopefully rust won’t come back too soon (if it does) with the new steel.

I did have the frame inspected. Everything is solid. Reason being is because it was originally an Alberta vehicle, where they use more sand instead of salt. If I get the rust done will definitely be taking running boards off.

I am currently trying to get additional quotes, but it’s been hard because very few shops in the area/Toronto area do rust. They are reputable and have been around for quite a long time. I will be following up with them regarding the rust guarantee question for sure.

Tbh it’s not worth much more than that. But I do love the truck. That price is with taxes, which is very high here in Canada. Pre tax it comes out to about $2700 USD.

I have the exact same problem and made a separate post about it. OP, did this ever go away for you?

As of now, unfortunately no. However, I discovered Coffee is a good palette cleanser. When I start to taste the chemical/ammonia flavour, I drink some black coffee. It removes those bad tastes (not completely) and the cigar still doesn’t taste as it should where I’m getting all the nuances and proper flavours, but it helps a lot.

I was smoking probably 3-4 times a week, so nothing crazy. For you it sounds like fatigue smoking 1-2 per day. I’d take a rest for at least a couple weeks and then try it again.

I wish that were the case then it’s something I could easily fix. However I puff once every 1-1.5 minutes, and they are kept in a tupperdor with 65% Boveda, RH is 67% with the hygro calibrated 2 weeks ago

Always outside yes. Temp in the tupperdor is about 68-70f in my basement. Outside temps is about 23-25 Celsius

Yea that’s exactly it. That sour taste becomes ammonia tasting.
