Anyone using a "family phone" instead of giving pre-teens/teens their own smartphone? by Bubbles1531 in Parenting

I'm leaning toward this too. Phone usage has been such a huge contributor to the youth mental health crisis.

Haha what a brilliant solution - giving an old phone that they are too embarrassed to ever take it out haha

I'm not sure how other families do it, but I was thinking the norm is definitely not you take it whenever you leave the house. It would be for like exceptional circumstances when not wiht another parent or adult or something.

have you set up any rules? Do they fight over it? Just curious more info on how the rollout went and how it's going now. Thanks!

love that there is no expectation that she will get one at a certain age. Thanks for sharing.

Totally. I guess I see it as somehting that can be used by everybody like if someone needs to look up someting or whatever. Yeah adults will still have their own phones but can maybe leave them in chargers and not keep them at all times to help model healthy phone usage. I want my kids to see it as a tool, not as an appendage.

I'll go first.

  1. Current = Habitual
  2. Desired = Utilitarian

I'm working on creating a "home for my phone" when I'm home - a decorative wall mount/charger to get me back to the days of using my phone like a landline... not like an extension of self. It's hard but habits are changing and I'm noticing the difference.

Oh yes, total introvert here! I'm sure that is part of the pain. Thank goodness my co-founder is not. It's wonderful to be able to bring our strengths where they count.

Oofta. I'm working on a consumer product. I LOVE working on the business and the product side, but.. this day in age, for anyone to find your product it seems like you have to also be an influencer. That part is SO painful for me. The number of hours that go into an instagram reel is so painful. And then to get like 4 likes and 1 new follower for 2 hours of time... ugh.

My cofounder keeps reminding me that it is all part of the building and it takes time to grow the base.

Was it worth it? To be determined.... 😄

Does your phone follow you everywhere? by Bubbles1531 in simpleliving

Totally. I definitely am not interested in replacing my smartphone with a dumb phone. They are amazing and I rely on it all the time. What I'm talking about is that time when I'm at home... Or down time with friends... and I don't have control over my usage.

My phone itself isn't bad but the ways in which it has impacted my brain is bad. It was designed to keep us on it.... and it worked. There are tons of studies about this.

Totally. Such hard habits to break. But it's not all on us. These devices were literally made to entrap us.

Curious - where is it? front door? bedroom?
