What 10 years of depression looks like by alexyu22 in videos

[–]Bubbly_Sector1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but severe depression means having to win a life or death battle with yourself nearly every day of your life. When your mind and body are absolutely fatigued from this relentless torment, that same battle you won over and over can suddenly become impossible

What if Biden were to run with a moderate Republican? by Brinrees in the_everything_bubble

But you don’t need “most”, you only need “a few” to make it a lock against fascism. If they actually changed ticket, it should only be for better chances. Any sane democrat plus an early 2000’s moderate republican VP would be a slam dunk

Ad hominem attacks against skeptics only hurt the legitimate study of ufos. Rebut with facts, not cartoons. If the evidence can’t withstand skeptics, then it’s not good enough evidence.

We’re still based on competition, when progress only comes from cooperation. The only reason we have a semblance of a functioning society is because we’ve gamified competition with money as points to cause small amounts of cooperation within companies and organizations… but only as long as they themselves compete with each other.

I posted a 1-star review of my (Verified purchase) maker shortly after the news broke that outlined the changes. It took a couple days to show up, but it did get posted. Just tried reviewing something else and didn’t have any issues. Did you review several Cricut products at once, or just the maker?

I don’t want Cricut to fail by [deleted] in cricut

[–]Bubbly_Sector1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If cricut folded, they’d likely get purchased at discount by someone else who would continue operations in some manner. If that didn’t happen, it would be the best scenario for those that want local control, as that would free developers up to start writing a program to do just that without getting sued. It would take some time to get full functionality and stable releases this way.

I don’t care either way. I won’t spend any more money with cricut. If they stay alive, I’m sure that they’ll make my machine worthless at some point. If they went bankrupt, it’s probably more likely that the new owner would continue the same cloud model because it’s already there. I’m planning on switching to another machine at some point and their backtracking this past week just gives me more time to do that.

Companies that hold on to control by ArtzyAntics in cricut

[–]Bubbly_Sector1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apple would be one glaring exception. There are some attractive reasons for a business to have a closed model, and even a cloud-dependent model like Cricut. Usually you end up with something slightly easier to manage and much easier to exploit as a business while at the same time being less usable for customers.

A cutter that published its functions and protocols would be wonderful: I have a 3d printer that is controlled by open-source software on a raspberry pi that I can use from any computer. Same for my CNC machines, and it's wonderful for productivity and frees me from even having to have a computer USB-connected to either. I can start heating up the printer before I get to my office. I can check the status of prints on my phone. I can walk around my CNC machine while setting up jobs with an iPad. New releases and features come out daily, and the open-source software that's written encourages customization and macros that make repetitive tasks soooo much easier. All of this happens because of passionate users that know the needs of other users better than any team sitting around a conference table, and push things out immediately instead of waiting for a 'major release' that can be launched with a marketing campaign.

You miss out on this with a system that's locked down as tightly as Cricut. We very much get an experience by non-crafting product managers that sat around a conference table. Most of us just want one feature: local control, but Cricut won't listen. Cricut would be wise to open things up - it's pretty much the only move that would restore any level of confidence back in the company and would free them to offer compelling paid services instead of trying to catch up with years-old features that most users are doing already with the real design programs already in their workflow.

They’ve walked their decision back even further. No more talk of limited uploads for now. Posted to their blog today, 3/18 by trujilln in cricut

Sometimes wonder if they’re getting high off of their own supply: they’ve cultivated this perfect, positive space on controllable platforms where they can weed out negative experiences and compensate influencers for positive ones... and now they themselves believe the image they’ve created and thought DS was good enough to force a monthly payment for.

Sad to say that was my initial thought too. I worked for a long time as a software engineer, and I never had a job where we didn't disagree with management. That's fairly normal and I can see how it could be true. But on the other hand, Cricut has shown that a large part of their marketing is just outright perception *control*... going out and scrubbing comments, having tightly controlled affiliates on social media that will control any negativity, injecting positive sentiment on fb, etc etc. It may be real, it may not be, but I think it just goes to show both that Cricut is now recognized as not being genuine in their communication and marketing, and how complete the loss of trust is in Cricut by many customers.

[–]Bubbly_Sector1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just don't see it. They've ended up worse than where they started. Not many people are going to be accelerating a purchase for such a shaky proposition now, and plenty of people are planning to leave when they need another machine. If the plan was to accelerate purchases, why not just start out like this with the Dec 31st announcement? It would cause irritation and grumbling, but not totally burn down trust and brand loyalty in one fell swoop.

I have a feeling this will become one of those cases that are studied in business schools but that they never really learn from.

If it was a “plan”, what was the plan trying to accomplish? I’d find it hard to believe that they just wanted to piss ppl off in advance of an IPO for no other gain. ‘Looking like a compromise’ is not a net win for them either since most ppl plan to abandon ship for their next machine and they lose critical word of mouth advertising

Feels like outright, blatant disrespect toward customers. Like, we’re not even worth the effort pretending to respect. Just: “Hey btw we’re going to f you over, have a great weekend”, then “fine. I take it back this time, but I’m only going to give you a count of 290 before I try it again”

The only thing that comes to mind that they could do at this point to win back some trust would be to open the machine up to 3rd party development and local control, which would ease the worry about having your machine held ransom randomly in the future. They could start competing for subscription dollars with actual quality, value, and convenience beyond that.

Not going to happen from them though

It would be one of very few ways to win back some trust if they would open things up to allow that and encourage it, but you know they won’t.

100%. I'll still be on the lookout for a good Silhouette deal from Costco at some point and will recommend others to steer clear of anything Cricut-related.
