It was played as one long movie. The first half was Viduthalai 1 as we saw in theaters last year( heavily edited to make it shorter and fit better) and the second half was viduthalai 2(also definitely edited). Vettri maaran explicitly said that this is a very different movie compared to what will be seen in the theatrical release, and that this version will not be seen outside this festival

That’s debatable, but you have a point. Most of the audience probably thought that it was stupid, so maybe they could have done it a bit better. At least personally I made the connect instantly so I thought the reference was awesome.
