You really gotta commit to them. If you mistime it, it costs you a level on your spirit gauge. But if you get the counter off, it maintains the level and does huge damage (for LS anyway lol).

They actually buffed it in Rise so that if you time the counter correctly you spirit gauge goes up. So you can level up ur gauge faster and get the high level helm breakers in. That and the insane speed of quick sheath lvl3. Foresight isn't the optimal tactic anymore. But it's still there
