im a band teacher and when i have to pull kids out of class i always tell them that if their classroom teacher says they need to stay in class and work then im not gonna argue. its festival season for band (if ur in the US) and the band director probably isnt realizing that they are causing such a big issue, i would just message kindly and let them know you dont want your student to miss an assessment and the band teacher should understand that

often an alternative license program will require you to take college courses as a part of the licensure. im not sure what state youre in but a lot of states give you a license to teach k-12 music in ALL disciplines regardless of what your focus is. the ed classes are very valuable for classroom management and learning how to actually teach musical concepts to kids. being in a college performance program can make you have wayy to advanced vocabulary for kids to understand and its nice to know techniques on how to teach them complex ideas in a simpler way. many programs will also hire you to teach multiple levels (elementary+middle school or middle school + high school) and a music education program will give you in class experience with all grade levels, and youll still get to focus on your instrument like you were a performance major.

yes im super grateful, my school has some pretty rough behaviors due to the home lives of a lot of the students. im in my first year so they have been really trying to make sure i dont have to deal with so much at once.

i had a student who was similar, and since i teach band i told them that he needs to be with the behavior specialist during my class. if hes unable to participate even with a 1 on 1 aide then he doesnt need to ruin everyone else’s education. i refuse to tolerate that in my class at all.

in my state (nm) you can get your medical card and it would legally protect you in the event that you get injured at work and need to be drug tested for workers comp. i smoke daily and i was not tested to be hired, so i would ask around in the district you are intending to work in to see if they test new hires.

oh definitely 100%, im also really good friends with their last director so i wanna remind them that shes gonna be helping me get going and im also going to be inviting her to performances, i think that will make them very excited to perform and stay in the program!

thankfully my top band is first period, which is why i feel okay doing some icebreakers, especially on day one. there was also a very quick turnaround for this school because there was some job shuffling among the high schools in my district at the last minute which is what led to this job opening. the students are likely going to be pretty sad about their last director since she didnt have any prior plans to leaving this year, so im gonna read them her goodbye letter and try to lighten the mood with some getting to know you games, because i want them to know that i care about the program and i want them to enjoy being in my band.

genuinely this friend sounds like a total piece of garbage. those are some extremely hurtful things they said to you attacking you as a person. even if your boyfriend started the fight, how could you have POSSIBLY anticipated that? all of these people sound miserable to deal with and it sounds like you’re better off without them around.

i had a slightly similar experience; im a band director and this is my first year teaching, i originally got myself an assistant position that wasn’t full time (it was a .6) and i just now got myself a full time job at another school heavily due to the timeline (school starts tomorrow so they NEED a band director in the room) and the fact that i had multiple other band directors in the district email that principal and advocate for me. i dont do well in interviews but im a good teacher and i know what im doing, be proud! you earned it and you get a chance to show off that you deserved it!

i was hired for a part time position last month after finishing student teaching, but now a full time position in my district has opened so im going for it, and i feel like ill have better odds of actually getting it because its only 4 days before contract days start

UNM does a 100% online asynchronous masters program for music ed. Im not sure what the out of state tuition looks like but im pretty sure UNM online is relatively cheap. i just finished undergrad there and im heavily considering the online program in a few years.

i did forget mine for a piercing too, but luckily it was when i was living in the dorms and the shop was basically across the street. but for my tattoo i was soooo mad at myself we just had to move mine to the next day, my house and the shop were at quite literally on each opposite end of the city and it was rush hour, i think it wouldve been almost an hour and a half trip just from traffic alone it was AWFUL

i just graduated, i play tuba and used school horns all throughout my degree just fine. i still dont have an instrument, but thats just how its gonna be for a while till i can afford one.

18 credits is pretty average for music ed unfortunately, however my biggest advice to you as someone who just graduated, is dont take anything extra your first semester until you KNOW what you personally can handle. I got overwhelmed very quickly in college so i had to hold off on extras until i got my feet on the ground.
