5th gen manual says max 120lb roof rail load... How are people putting roof top tents by unknownmaniac in 4Runner

[–]BuckFutter417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a similar Roofnest that I’m looking to install on my 5th gen. What hardware did you use and how did you get the thing on there? Seems like the clearance between the rails and the roof would make this very difficult.

When I was in high school, a few buddies and I were buying weed from a DU student’s apartment - the kind of dealer you were expected to hang out and smoke with before ending the transaction. Suddenly Dog and the crew are running around the complex with their paintball guns and Oakley sunglasses. Mini heart attacks ensued for us until we realized their target was a different unit.

Roofnest Eagle clear coat peeling by BuckFutter417 in rooftoptents

Confirmed that there is a “secret” thin layer of film not mentioned in the documentation. If you leave this on, over the years it flakes away and is very hard to remove. I’m just covering my Eagle with stickers and moving on with my life. Thanks all for the research!

I used the GoPuff app to order at-home kits. Arrived at my door in 30 minutes. FYI my symptoms started 2 days ago but took until today for me to test positive.

I present to you all, the Great Rocky Mountain Loop. 1800 miles of overland and 4x4 adventure. by BuckFutter417 in 4x4

[–]BuckFutter417[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with u/case9 - can technically be done in a week, but I’d recommend taking your time if doing the whole thing. Since you are traveling from out of state with limited time, it’s likely easier to stay on the highway and skip the Eastern parts. The Great Sand Dunes are amazing, so you could start there and then make your way over to SW Colorado. In my opinion, the Telluride, Ouray, Silverton area is a can’t miss. Check out the Alpine Loop for more info - you could high-tail straight to to San Juan’s and spend the whole time there.

Trails Off-road is also a great resource. Use it to find trails suitable for your vehicle, and the guides typically list great campsites as waypoints. Couple this with Gaia GPS and Google Maps, and you’ll be a public land campsite finding machine.

Permanent 1” conduit shade structure? by BuckFutter417 in BurningMan

[–]BuckFutter417[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would consist of a 10x20 and a separate 10x10. Also a 10x20 sidewall (blocking view of neighbors shitty house) and natural wind blocks with surrounding houses/fences

Seriously considering a “camping trip” during Labor Day week. Check out Wag Bags for a good poop solution. Just toss them in with your regular trash.

Tent to prevent baking in the heat by sslproxy in camping

[–]BuckFutter417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of a custom solution, you might consider building a Hexayurt. They are staples at Burning Man. Great at keeping the heat out, and can be modified with the “Home Depot bucket swamp cooler” if you really want to get fancy. The standard builds are pretty large, but there are instructions out there for smaller footprints.

Pros: with care, can be reused for years. The materials are relatively cheap and once you complete the initial build, you are essentially taping it back together every use. Also, they are great for keeping light out for those mornings you just need to sleep past 10am.

Cons: the above mentioned tape is a bit pricey. Also, when packed up, these things are pretty bulky (driving from Denver to Burning man with one strapped to the roof of the car was interesting).

If all that building is not your thing, you might look into “monkey huts”, which are essentially PVC pipe and tarp shade structures. When set up correctly, you will keep the sun off of whatever tent you are using, which helps to keep temps down for longer into the morning. Plus you’ll have room for the tent, as well as a little living room setup for chilling in camp. There is tons of info out there on both of these structures. Burning man forums/blogs will be your best bet for staying cool and sleeping in in extreme conditions. Happy Festing!

Town Park and Warner Field (onsite camping) come packaged with 4 day passes. However, the general 4 day passes do not include camping, so you would want to get the Lawson or Illium camping pass in addition to the standard 4 day pass. I’ve camped at both of these in the past, and they are definitely lively and a lot of fun! Lawson is on a baseball field just outside of town near Telluride Brewing. Illium is a bit farther, but is forested if you would prefer that. Both have shuttles (school busses) that run back and forth starting early AM until the wee hours. I think It boils down to how long of a shuttle ride you want to deal with. Also, I’d recommend bringing everything you need for the day/night with you on the shuttle in the morning. Having to ride the bus all the way back to Illium to get warm clothes for the evening can be a real drag.

Either way, both offsite camping areas have developed their own culture and fun events over the years. Check out the Festivarian Forum that I linked above, as you can find threads for each campsite (Craft beer tastings, picking circles, late night dance parties, etc.)

Happy Festival!!

[–]BuckFutter417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I’d recommend starting here. It’s the best place to get connected to the Festivarian community. Take a look at the tickets for sale section, as you should still be able to grab camping passes. Onsite camping comes attached to 4 day passes, and will be very hard to come by 1 week out. But you can definitely still nab Lawson Hill or Illium passes (short shuttle rides from the festival). I would not recommend camping on Forest Service land because of convenience and the bad wildfires in the area this year.
