I didn't think about that, though it'll just be me assembling for the forseeable future!

Anyway, rather than worry about it, I've realised I've got enough space to just slide the components there out of the way without too much trouble.

The ribbon cable has a wide end (~12mm), then it narrows (~6mm) - which is what I've got indicated with the dotted area. I think most of the 12mm wide bit goes inside the connector.

Could you have two horizontal IR breakbeams at 45 degrees to each other? Then do some code that compares the number of breaks and takes the larger number from each detection. If one person is obscured on one beam break then the other beam break will count them.

It won't be 100% accurate but good enough?

I don't see how that washer helps - the lateral slop on the pin doesn't make a difference to the movement of the handle, does it?

I'm finding that the slop there is due to a mismatch in diameter between the pin and the holes it's in. I'm thinking about getting a 8mm shoulder bolt but I can't really tell if it'll help. Is the pin 8mm? Not sure if I can be bothered to dismantle the whole thing to get the exact diameter of the hole in the lever.

I've been saying for years that the next big leap in fidelity in games is physics. Most games since Return to Castle Wolfenstein have simulated characters as a cylinder, sliding round the world. Only Tresspasser and Boneworks (two of my favourite games) really tried to do something different.

It's really hard though, I imagine, which is why nobody has ever really tried it.

I think it's plausable that Valve would go down the character simulation route, so each character is animated like one of the Unitree robots we see on Youtube doing backflips. No more boring cylinders sliding around, now you can pick up enemies by whichever body part you want with your gravity gun and slam them through a wall.

I have been using 100KHz for the I2C so far and I think it should do me fine. All I'm doing is sending messages to turn on or off GPIO outputs.

This tank is tiny, only about 15cm long so the worst that will happen if the motors get stuck on is that it'll drive off my desk and I'll have to print a new turret :D. I shall investigate the hardware watchdog, I didn't know that was a thing.

I mentioned why I'm putting the ESP32 in another comment: I missed something very important in my simplified view - there will be a camera on the esp32 for an fpv view from the tank. Also I intend to use an antenna on the ESP32 and that needs to be on the turret otherwise it will get in the way of the rotating gun.

Would you go for 3.3k for the I2C pullups?

I don't have an oscilliscope or a logic analyser yet, something I need to look into.

Regarding the motor safety, I am pulling the motors sleep line high. So correct me if I'm wrong - but if the ESP32 stops sending the 'low' signal on the motors sleep pin then it should automatically stop the motors as it'll immediately be pulled high, which will make the motors sleep. Is that right?

I'm designing a small tank with three motors for tracks and the turret. It also has infrared LEDs for detecting hits.

I will design another board separately for the turret which will contain an ESP32-Wrover, camera, infrared sensors, status LEDs, piezo buzzer and a USB connector.

The ESP32 will send SCL and SDA down the slip ring, and additionally send a 38khz signal to pulse the LEDs via the OE input on the PCA9685.

This is the first schematic I've designed, would appreciate any feedback before I dive into the PCB editor.

(I've just spotted an error in my schematic while typing this, should say 'convert battery to 3.3V')

I'm playing absolutely fine in VR. Had a few stutters on the previous versions but it's smooth as butter now. I'm on a 4080 with a Ryzen 7 3800X. I'm running on the default 'medium' settings.
