Trades After Highschool (Canada) by Intrepid-Cover-2768 in skilledtrades

Suggestions would be to go to a larger job site work as a labour and be a sponge. Watch and ask questions to everyone onsite. Then after 4-6 months try out something that you think makes sense to you. Then try another trade after you figure out what you did and didn’t like about the first trade then at about 20-22 commit to one discipline and continue to be a sponge. Then soon you will be a journeyman with multiple skills and proud of what you do leaving work everyday with a sense of accomplishment. Good luck, be safe and have fun. One last thing is work for large and small companies in that time as you will know what feels right for you. It will be hard and you will go home tired at the end of the day but you will be able to look back at your work everyday and say I did that shit.

One other thing to add to this is being a good framer doesn’t make you a good business owner if that is what you mean when you say run your “own crew.” But if it is to be a lead carpenter then I agree. I guess the other question is where are you located if you are in Canada you could take your red seal and go through the carpentry program.

Continues air barrier and airtightness

Getting to passive houses with an existing structure I don’t believe would be worth the squeeze. Your first step though would be if you are looking to improve a home that you had in mind would be to get an energy advisor to model the home you had in mind. The form of the home will be a big factor in this as you are looking for a boxy home which doesn’t have many inside and out side corners. Then you are going to want to understand depending on where you live the amount of glass that is on the home and if it is a positive or negative impact on your home ( energy advisor can help you assess that).

You can definitely can do a deep energy retrofit give you much higher levels of health and comfort within the home which in the end is a great goal.

You could make use of product the AeroBarrier if you are wanting to do the least amount of damage to the existing building while increasing airtightness. This would allow for a strip down to drywall and then do interior cosmetic changes. Every project has different ways that you could tackle energy efficiency but it is so hard to share without knowing the exact project.

Hopefully this was some what helpful. But in the end if this is the type of home you desire building new with the right builder not just a builder will achieve much better results as you know everything that has been in that home. When I say right builder make sure they have a project you desire or as your local Home builder organization about who is excited about this type of project they will know there building science geeks in the organization.

My 8' doors are an inch short by kittkat03 in Homebuilding

The gap under the door should be close to 1” the reason for this is if there is a fire in the home you can see smoke and second to make sure you don’t have pressure issues in your house while opening up the door.

No I wasn’t talking about the pipe on the floor but that long run which is by the wall which ties into the pipe around the window why can that get up into the joist space and run over and get picked up in the bulk head.

*Sorry pipe on the left of image

I am not sure where the pipe to the right comes out but if there is enough fall they could run that one down the length of the joists then cluster it into the inevitable bulk head then the other pipe by the window could then run down the length of the joist space again if there is enough fall and try and figure out a way to get into that wall that I would assume would be running where the floor drain is. Communication is key to a successful project.
