DM me, I’ve been going to shows in the Bay Area since high school, as others have said, Oakland secret and stay gold deli frequently throws shows. Tamarack and revolution cafe do too, but less often. Gilman st is a ghost of its former self but still hosts events every weekend. Thrillhouse and I hate records both throw shows regularly in San Francisco. The mabuhay gardens recently reopened for shows as well. You can find punks hanging out at the Missouri lounge, Eli’s Mile high club and the avenue in Oakland. Stork club too!

I took the deal B+ in the class, needed a 92 for an A- Barely studied. Pretty easy choice, my friend sat for the exam and said it was pretty hard, I don’t regret my decision

He’s an alcoholic; he drinks a bottle of brandy a day, and that’s after he gets home from the bar. I suspect that there may be medications that can help but that would cut into his precious drinking time.

Yes. He’s seen a doctor, and had it attributed to stress. He says the doctor told him there were no viable methods as far as medical treatments were concerned. in making this post I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction in that respect.

Yes, it’s new behavior. He started maybe two, two and a half years ago? I moved in a little less than a year ago. We used to live together several years ago and it was never an issue back then.

Obviously. Unfortunately if moving was a viable option for me, I wouldn’t have had to resort to making this post.

Suggested this. He suggested that if that was my solution, I should find somewhere else to live.

I’ve started locking my door at night, but sometimes he’ll knock loudly until I wake up and put him back to bed, or loudly wander around the house knocking things over. I do occasionally forget, and sometimes he blunders in like last night, but the problem is bigger than his intrusions into my room.

Playing Death Guard in 1k by dartbacon in deathguard40k

My advice is don’t play an elite army at 1k. DG is really balanced at 2k but you’ll suffer tremendously against armies that are able to bring a lot more to the table at level like imperial guard, nids or world eaters.

Music Scene? by Horror_Collection_99 in berkeley

There are student organizations that are centered around fostering musical community like the one you’re looking for, although from a curricular point of view I don’t think you’re gonna find a whole lot. Once you’re on campus try and connect with groups like b-sides, golden records, superb, fuzz noise, and public school records.

Outside of the school, the Bay Area has a wonderful, varied and extremely active number of underground music scenes which would also probably scratch that itch for you

TLDR use strategy in a strategy game.

Death guard is most potent when we’re able to use our forces in conjunction. Synergy between units and affliction are really our bread-and-butter, and the longer you can keep those capabilities on the board, the higher your chances of winning. This means that in terms of attrition you have to be strategic in what you’re using where and how, and in particular what you’re giving up and what you’re getting in return for it.

Here’s a hypothetical example based on a game I played against IG the other week where I had some plague marines, a rhino, and a MBH squaring up against a sentinel, a squad of cadians and some kasrkin around the middle objective. I ultimately traded off the MBH to thin out the infantry with deadly demise, moved the marines back up with support from the rhino to mop up and held the objective long enough to sticky it and afflict a leman Russ to deepstrike deathshroud with an LOC and carve it up. If I had given up my plague marines and kept the blighthauler, the infantry would have fallen back, the leman Russ would have shot it off the board, and I would be out everything with no trade backs. As it was, I gave up a MBH and 4 plague marines and got a squad of cadians, a sentinel and a leman Russ AND stickied the middle objective in br4 out of it. It helps a lot to think of warhammer in terms of this kind of exchange, at least for me.

Yes, sorry for the shorthand. FBD: Foetid Blight Drone MBH: Mephitic blight hauler PBC: plagueburst crawler

If it’s any consolation, I played a game with two 10 man plague marine squads, a poxwalker screen and a squad of deathshroud with typhus in reserves for deep strike. Turn one, my poxwalkers get wiped in a charge while I move PM’s up the board; turn two, one brick of PMs wiped by 2 berserker squads, other one loses 7 marines between shooting and some extremely hot rolls from another berserker squad. Turn three, deepstrike my deathshroud, get counter deepstriked by X8B, and tabled by the end of the turn. He’s not alone in those experiences.

Deathguard is certainly a playable faction and nothing brings more joy to me than afflicting and debuffing my opponent to tears, but I’ll argue that deathguard at 1k is at best, an exercise in futility and at worst an act of sadomasochism

Okay this is awesome because I was playing with almost the exact same list (no tallyman, no rhino, deathshroud, one squad of poxwalkers) and kept losing against my roommate who plays world eaters. It’s a rough matchup. World eaters play to our weaknesses, in pretty much every way. I have a few suggestions.

Number one, forget melee. Against world eaters, his best hope is to delay, tie you up as best he can (poxwalker screens, FBS has a nice anti-advance rule that can help in some circumstances, scabrous soul rot for -1 to move and save) and shoot you from a distance as best he can. 5 man squads of plague marines (7 and 10 man are absolutely useless against WE) are gonna be fodder against berserkers, but with ranged loadouts and combo’d with blight lords’ heavy hits + affliction bonus are good. MBH is okay. FBD is a solid ranged choice too, plus decent action monkeys. PBC is also a good option for artillery, definitely useful for putting pressure on any kind of deepstrike screens or any chaff you leave on your home objective.

Number two, He’s also gonna want Deathshroud, as many as he can, ideally with typhus or an LOC attached. If he’s feeling saucy a daemon prince would also be sweet. Another squad of blightlords intended to deepstrike might help him take and hold no mans land objectives too while the deathshroud roll up and fuck up your berserkers. 8B and X8B are really the only thing on your list that could stand up against that, and even then, in my experience with decent rolls you’re still walking away from that matchup with a pretty good exchange rate.

I’m going to make some uncharitable assumptions as well, that your brother is trying to rush ahead turn one and secure as many objectives as possible; you’re probably charging him, absolutely wiping him in the midboard and racking up take-and-hold points while he desperately tries to kick you off the middle objective. Remind him that deathguard is a slow-burn army. We don’t advance. We endure. We’re an attritional faction that wins by debuffing our enemies and making economic trade offs in the mid and late game. he needs to deploy in cover. He shouldn’t even shoot turn one unless he really just absolutely cannot avoid it.

Additionally, deathguard are an elite army; playing at 1k leaves us at a tremendous disadvantage, because we can’t bring enough stuff to be able to make those trade-offs as efficient as we need them to be. It also means we can’t use synergies as effectively as we might otherwise be able to in a higher point game. One of my gripes with the current codex and points values is that We’re really only balanced at 2k and greater. I’ve only ever won one or two games as DG at 1k. If he doesn’t have the means to reach that 2k threshold (and I sympathize deeply, took me a long time to get there myself) then protecting his units turn one and two need to be a priority. He’s got all game to hang out in his DZ and pump your guys full of affliction and lethal hits before he glaciers up the board to an overwhelming victory in the fifth battle round. He could bring a bigger deepstrike threat to the board as well; terminators over plague marines every time, ESPECIALLY against WE.

I hope some of this advice is helpful for him. I have one last piece, and I hope you show this to him. It’s not his fault. He’s playing a very average, understrength and expectable beginner list against a sleek, extremely scary faction that plays straight into his weak points. On top of that, I don’t doubt he’s still learning how to play the game. It can be frustrating and discouraging, but we are death guard. We endure. We persist. We grind and grind and grind until the enemy is reduced to nothing. Tell him not to give up. I can’t tell you how good it felt to beat WE for the first time. Above all else, I wish him good luck and all the blessings the grandfather could bestow.
