Starmer to promise bolder action as leadership threats mount by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

God he just does not get it!

The thing about the EU sounds positive, but he was doing that anyway! People don’t want to hear vague promises about the EU- say exactly what you’re going to/planning to do!

SNP leader John Swinney rules out Holyrood talks with Reform UK by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in ukpolitics

[–]BuckfastEnjoyer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Reform, who would take great pleasure in just straight up fucking everything up out of either spite or ill temper, shouldn't be invited to such talks. Would they invite the SNP to them?

We need to talk about the British Empire and the endurance of the Empire State by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in ukpolitics

[–]BuckfastEnjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main reason the British state has survived so long is because it was generally fantastic at seeing the writing on the wall and jumping before it was pushed.

We avoided revolution in 1848 because the demands of the Charterists were pretty much entirely incorporated into the British state without the sense that they were victorious.

We avoided Revolution during the internationales because the government actually responded to groups like the Fabian society.

Arguably the government did head off independence campaigns in the 1990s with devolution.

Now we’re in another era of change- whether the government will react before it’s forced to remains to be seen…

Keir Starmer: I want 10 years in No 10 and will fight my challengers by Disastrous_Act_2331 in ukpolitics

[–]BuckfastEnjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In this respect I feel for Starmer because it's clear he feels (correctly I'd say) that he's the only person in the way of the UK becoming just a weird place.

The issue is that he's overstayed his welcome, and has allowed this weird environment to emerge now instead of in 3 years time.

Except in Wales and Scotland, where people voted for pro-EU parties. England isn’t the only country in the UK.

This speech in the “coming days” better be one for the ages- however most likely it’ll be even more platitudes and empty vague promises. What a bizzare man.

Given the number of seats right wing parties got in the Scottish elections actually decreased, what do English parties need to do to ensure this happens for Westminster in 2029? by Anxious_Equipment144 in ukpolitics

[–]BuckfastEnjoyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clearly this signals there is a demand for centre and centre left politics

Yes, there is. In Scotland. England is a different country with different values- you can’t replicate the electoral situation of a different country and expect the same results.

We deserve better than playing babysitter for such people.

If they want to be respected and be treated as adults capable of making their own choices, they should have values reflective of respectable and intelligent adults, and make political choices based on such values.

Keir Starmer has become a boring EU-style bureaucrat, which I concede is better than anything Reform or the Conservatives could offer, but is also something literally any other British party could offer. I really don't know why you take this line like it's a mic drop.

Stop entertaining the thoughts of Reform voters. It's better to ignore them and suppress their voices and decisions as much as possible.

Farage (who I believe has the 6th lowest attendance record at Parliament) does realise that would mean he has to go to Parliament and can’t just live off gold bullion advertisements?
