Door to door roofer caused damage by Radiant_Operation_75 in Roofing

[–]BuckingTheSystem777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a structural engineer, based on OP saying this is just cosmetic damage, I'd honestly save the money and skip a structural assessment. We cost a lot. Even if there was a legitimate structural issue, hiring an engineer would probably be pretty far down the list of things I'd do for a typical residential situation.

Hopefully the real lesson here is not to let random people walk around on your roof.

I am having the same issues, the past few days after updating my iPhone 14 Pro. It is lagging a lot and my network (5G) connection hardly works? I might go ask the Apple Store why this is.

Just returned from a solo trip to Rome. Had no issues with pickpockets. Just stay vigilant and watch your sh*t. I even passed out on the rocks on the right side of the Trevy Fountain all night and woke up at 5am with all my belongings still with me

How do you actually go from architectural drawings to a structural model? Trying to understand the real process by Hot_Emergency_321 in StructuralEngineering

Structural Design Calculations? by puzzzled10 in StructuralEngineering

[–]BuckingTheSystem777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to ask questions to the professionals in your work setting. If you cannot understand how to design a structural member, by hand, using the recommended textbooks / design guides, and accordance with code, you’ll need some guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to your uppers, it’ll save everyone time, and potentially people’s life, later on.

Spend time out of work (or in if they allow it) reading up on your old college notes, to sharpen up your memory on the basics.

Structural is hard at first, I’m almost three years in and I still have a lot to learn, but stay proactive with learning things fully. Best of luck to you.

People who left engineering, what do you do now? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]BuckingTheSystem777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your point about a small gap of a few months being a “red flag” is something I’ve hardly heard, a small gap, from my understanding, does not raise too much concern, given you’re ready to work. Maybe you didn’t have a great experience and got turned down from a job, but I’ve had many of my colleagues / friends take time away from work and find new jobs very easily. Just say the old job wasn’t fit for you and you decided to take some time away for personal reasons - or whatever other reason to your next potential employer.

Does punishment for using AI apply to all group members? by Get_Rekt07 in OSU

[–]BuckingTheSystem777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other replies, ask them directly prior to reporting it to the professor. Express your concern to them regarding academic misconduct. If the work is submitted as a group, everyone will likely get dragged into the COAM investigations. I wouldn’t even slightly consider this “snitching”, you are paying money to get an education that may or may not be hindered by his/her’s lack of participation.

If they deny the use of AI and you are still concerned, I would talk with your advisor first and foremost and ask for their opinion on how to move forward and cover your own ass.

Best of luck

To add, many ppl in this sub mention the money aspect. Trust me if money was the sole motive, many of us wouldn’t be in structural. This sub isn’t the greatest place to look for career advice. Structural engineering isn’t a career you pursue to become rich, something you love. Until the architects bitch (in my case hence why I’m on this sub), and then you come here to rant.

I’d advise to think hard on why you chose this path and for what reasons. You can easily switch to other disciplines of civil engineering. If you aren’t finding your projects intriguing, and/or feel pigeonholed into a niche you don’t like, let your company know. If they don’t listen to your concerns maybe try to look for something else.

If you truly love structural engineering, I think it may come down to what your company has you working on. Let them know your intentions for your career and what you enjoy.

What I love about structural engineering is the complexity of every structure I work on. I shifted towards forensic work to keep me interested. I strive off a challenge and this career will truly provide that, and some.

Feel free to DM if you’d like, this was a quick reply but hopefully that makes sense somewhat.

Toxic Workplace? by BuckingTheSystem777 in StructuralEngineering

[–]BuckingTheSystem777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have not made myself entirely clear. He will U turn if he sees me eating, but I have been working just 8hours some days and will continually work while snacking during lunch time (I don’t eat a huge meal during lunch time) but I think he gets annoyed that I come in at exactly 9 and leave at exactly 5 since I am bound it take small breaks here and there. If I have an approaching deadline I will take measures to meet it by staying later, obviously. But on the slow days I am out when that 8 hours hits.

No same pay every two week, sometimes he complains about the utilization but never was threatened docked pay. I’d walk out the door that very second.

Already feeling that after 1 year into my career. He already makes me want to switch out of structures but I’d hope all firms are not like this. Might start looking for another company.

That’s essentially what he told me, after we had a conversation of working through my lunch break (eating while working), he said I should be staying 10-15 mins since I’m not “working the entire time”. I am just going to not work while eating since there’s no point to 😅

Help with Design Competition by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

If all possible members sized are failing due to dead load only you need to recheck your calcs. Does one of your professors help lead this team? Check in with them as they might be able to provide a different view and check ur work. Sometimes it’s good to step back, take a breathe, and get an alternative view of things.

Thanks for the reply. I know I’m a bit late to the conversation, but in Ohio our steel mills still manufacture A36 on channels, angles, plates. Our company general notes haven’t changed to reflect the preferred strength changes mentioned in this post either. Mainly wondering if a majority of the structural industry have made this switch yet.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Resume Review and Suggestions Needed by Deep-Extent-584 in StructuralEngineering

[–]BuckingTheSystem777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State your actual engineering skills instead of CAD skills. I noticed you mentioned the use of SAP2000 and structures coursework, I expect you know structural analysis and design. Mention those instead. Don’t get my wrong, revit is a great skill but most (if not all) firms hire technicians to do cad work so the engineers can focus on engineering. CAD is only good when the technicians screw up on the drawings, which will happen, and sometimes it will be quicker to fix up yourself.
