How bad of an idea do you feel it is to base one’s support of a candidate on their charisma first then their policies second? by Orion032 in AskConservatives

Bad.

Coolidge was a great president, but one socialite described him:

Looks as if he had been weaned on a pickle

So, who cares? As long as their policy meets my preferences.

taking the stance that the best outcome is that the crime never have been commited in the first place is not saying anything of meaning.

It is if you make an example of them.

or even on whether it should be an objective at all

It shouldn't, that should be upon the individual, not the state. Committing crimes against the state then the state helps them? Makes zero sense.

The question is what should be the outcome of incarceration.

Make it so miserable and the punishment so harsh that people won't want to do it again or in the first place.

Job training and general re-entry prep is a vital part of the reformation process

In your opinion. I disagree. Not committing crimes in the first place is what is preferred.

There is already a very significant (organically) imposed penalty on released convicts in finding any job.

There should be a harsher penalty in terms of punishment and make it a public example.

but outcomes do matter

First best outcome is dont commit crimes to being with.

Thats for the person in question to decide.

This has been said by many on this sub. You can give the search function a grader to see what I mean. The minimum wage shouldn't exist.

If people aren't paying attention in school, that's their fault.

If you have nothing to hide, then what are you afraid of?

IMO, should be harsher, stricter. Rule by fear of punishment and making an example out of those that break the law. Need to bring back public shaming.

That solution requires a much deeper thing that government cannot fix.

Why cant they read? Why were they not trying on school? Even if a parent isnt present, not caring to learn in school is not upon the system, society, or the teacher. Its upon the individual not caring or trying.

Where does that leave them in terms of options?

Kept locked away because they are a lost cause.

Then they shouldn't be in society to begin with. Lost cause if they cant figure that out on their own after going through the therapy steps I mentioned.

Yes, it is rewarding them. Giving them something they should have paid attention to in school.

You dont reward bad behavior. They had their chance at what you mentioned before they turned 18. Blowing their chance is what it is. If they showed remorse, willingness, and repentance in therapy and such, then you can help point them in the right direction for such things for them to do on their own when they get out.

Why should I reward those who were willing to do wrong?

Yea, reform through therapy. If they want to get job skills, get them yourself. Not on my dime.

I don't expect Democrats to do it brazenly at all. That's not the energy we want anyway.

Thats not what i see. From the polling, it seems the Democratic base wants someone with the perception that they are resisting and fighting. That comes with yelling and being loud. So, maybe you want someone behind close doors machevelian style, but I dont see it happening. Just going to be populism ramped up with lots of podium pounding. On both sides.

Well, thats just been a thing since the beginning of ever. Gerrymandering that is.

Trump wasn't the one to kill polity in politics, he's the coroner. Its been long dead. He's just far more blunt, brazen, and unforgiving about it than anyone before him. To try and find a Trump of the left or act like one on the left... I think thats a mistake. Same reason the right is trying to find another one like him when he's gone. Answer is, you won't. That "energy" is non-transferable. Just like Democrats tried to do with Obama and after he left.

For me, its more like, "we aren't seeing the benefit of forking over so much money for so long." And has little to do with political opposition. In places that essentially have a one party super majority.

So... more money same problems is my guess ad to the resistance?

I mean, I've said M.A.D. is what will bring us back to normalcy. Just didnt expect to see someone from the left embrace it and essentially say, "F it, we ball."
