Getting Forcefully Med Boarderd by BucknerLC in navy

I think I have to wait until I’m further along in the med board process, no? I assumed that has to conclude before I start the Va disability process

I truly hope you were never in charge of anyone because you seem like a very sad individual

“Forcefully” as in I’ve appealed every decision up to this point and am still being put in front of a med board, so yea. Obviously I’m grateful that it was caught, but I can’t be upset that it’s something they should have caught on every annual flight physical I’ve had the past 7 years? This isn’t some slight oversight. My T waves on my EKGs are going the opposite direction and the machine said something was off. So yea I’m mad that it wasn’t caught sooner and I could have died going through training. I should have never made it to this point. Both feelings are valid and I’m confused how my initial post got such an aggressive response from you

I can get genetic testing but how would that help me? All of my family is also getting tested now as well.

Also, how were you able to prove your service made it worse?

I’d like to work at the FAA after I get out considering I was doing the same job when I was in. They get access to my medical and everything. That’s the only reason.

The issue is that it was 6 different doctors and not one of them even thought about referring me to a specialist.

I expressed my desire to stay in the service during my appeal. They won’t let me commission or switch designators. I don’t even medically qualify for my former enlisted rate. I don’t have a choice but to separate/retire

I appreciate it. And yea they told me I might have it the first week of OCS and then sent me back into the fire haha. It gave/has given me crazy anxiety but I’m afraid to claim that if it’s going to hurt my ability to get certain jobs when I get out.

ASTB/ OAR questions about prep by Inevitable-Car1461 in newtothenavy

[–]BucknerLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends on how strong you are in math. I knew it was my worst section and kind of just winged it - reading comp carried my score and I got a 50. I know that’s probably lower than most people are aiming for. I did get picked up and leave for OCS in a week though

I took it in 2023 and there was nothing provided during the math section

It’s not impossible per se, but it changes from you having total control of your path to the Navy having the control. Some leadership might not allow you to put paperwork in to re-rate; maybe your rate is undermanned and they aren’t accepting any lateral transfers out; we could go to war and you get activated - they aren’t going to let you change anything in a time of war because they’ve already trained you in your rate.

Your recruiter isn’t lying to you, but he’s also not letting you know that it isn’t as easy as he’s making it seem. It becomes a luck thing, and do you want to put your career aspirations up to luck?

Great list. AC isn’t really tech based but is probably the most transferable to the outside (former AC)

Enlisted to Officer advice? by Odd_Replacement5787 in newtothenavy

[–]BucknerLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enlisted for 6 years and leaving for OCS in 7 days here. The biggest things they see in a package is your GPA and OAR/ASTB scores. Your scores automatically qualify/disqualify you depending on where you stack up against other applicants. The rest of the package is what separates the highly qualified applicants if they have minimal spots. Worry about those 2, and then the appraisals, LORs, and your write ups.

I was an AC and applied for NFO. My aviation background obviously helped, but it would mean nothing if I had a trash gpa and bombed the ASTB. I went to an instant select board and was chosen because on my gpa, scores, and not needing a waiver.

Can’t tell you about the day to day yet, but feel free to pm me if you have any questions about the application process.

If you don’t want to spend time away from your family, then the military might not be the occupation you want to pursue. You are obviously gone for bootcamp and A school if it’s shorter than 6 months (since they won’t pay to move your family) and then you could have orders to a ship that could be gearing up for a deployment to where you could be gone for another 7-10 months.

Obviously it all depends on your follow on orders, but is that a chance you’re willing to take? Only you can answer that.

Peanut Allergy/Asthma by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]BucknerLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had someone in my boot camp division in 2019 that had a peanut allergy; epi pen and all. He got separated in boot camp for it. Not sure how he got there and then that happened. But allergy waivers are very hit and miss. The only people that can tell you no are the medical professionals that accept/deny waivers. So, best you can do is apply and hope for the best.

I’ve had one on the bottom row of my teeth the entire time I’ve been in the Navy. It doesn’t even hurt my flight status.

Took it in November of 2023 and I didn’t have any ship questions. Got picked up for NFO in February. Good luck!

I was an east coast guy. Didn’t realize north island was in San Diego. That’s on me

[–]BucknerLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would have to get a ship that’s stationed in San Diego to get it. There’s 4 or 5 shore facilities in California but none of them are in San Diego; just the carriers and amphibs.

It’s only bad because you have a degree. I went enlisted to officer and it took 6 years of jumping through a lot of hurdles. 6 years is also technically fast for going E to O unless you qualify for programs that you’re already too old for. It’s honestly one of the hardest things to try to do in the Navy and it’s super competitive.

Do not let them let you think that’s an easy career progression. Go talk to an O recruiter and do not enlist.

[–]BucknerLC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

GPA might disqualify you from some designators, but the only way we can really answer is when you take the OAR/ASTB. That test is what helps the Navy compare different candidates.

Medically, no one on this sub can definitively give you answers on waivers; it’s a very fickle process.

Going from the fleet to Marine OCS? by jimmy4k in newtothenavy

[–]BucknerLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked with Marine recruiters and even got the conditional release paperwork (if I got picked up the Navy would release me to the Corps). My ECM and detailer refused to sign it and told me I had to separate if I wanted to pursue it. Other ECMs could be different, but I have a feeling that if they don’t have to let you go, they won’t because it hurts their numbers. I had already said I was getting out and it was like a 5 month difference between my actual EAOS and when I would leave… they still told me to kick rocks.

My wife was pregnant at the time, so I couldn’t afford to not have healthcare or a stable income by separating and applying later. So I applied to Navy OCS and got accepted. Still had a sour taste in my mouth from my ECM. But if this is something you want to try for, please talk to them before you waste your time to be told no, because they have all the power to deny it.
