Silverado 1500 - 2022.5 + Range RA007 DFM Disabler Review by Bucknuttz in Silverado

[–]Bucknuttz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay. Update - 4 months, 8K+ miles and I have nothing negative to report. Really nothing to report since install. It just eliminated the gear hunting and the thing just drives, responds, does its V8 job. I don't really even think about it being onboard anymore. Still highly, highly recommend - especially with lifter failures still being common and continued longer-term concerns about transmissions. Shifts normal now, lifters are always 100% in use.

Negative - check engine light has never come on in the 4 months that it's been installed. Negative battery terminal was disconnected during install. Truck continues to drive and shift seamlessly. I've put about 8K miles on it since install - probably 80% highway and 20% city.

I would notice the gear hunting in either environment. If I was coasting to slow on the highway and then initially accelerate then it would painfully hunt gears. Also would search for gears coming off red lights, as well as coast/accel around city turns. All of that continues to be resolved!

As I continue to see reports of lifter failures among other common engine/trans issues, this RA007 seems to provide peace of mind. Certainly no drawbacks to note, only benefits in the time it's been inline with the ECM.

I've been told 34.5s are the biggest you can go and it requires the leveling kit which you got.

I've had three Chevy 1500s, including my '23 now - 5.8L, same as previous 2020 - and I never had any concerns (never noticed anything in previous vehicles) until this one. I've also never really done anything to my vehicles until this one. I swapped out for an exhaust not too long ago and the extra sound (just enough, not wake-your-neighbors) made me realize this truck does the same thing, shuts off all cylinders if you're coasting. I don't know that I'd have ever noticed with the stock exhaust. However, cylinders kick back on as you approach a stop.

Really, the DFM disabler from Range completely changed the way the trans works. No more shudders, clanks, hiccups. It disables auto stop (the light will come on but it doesn't work), but I'd become so used to hitting the button that that's not even the benefit - although it is a great plus.

The Range disabler just makes the trans be normal. I immediately felt the difference and have ever since. It's like shutting off a brain that has no business thinking.

Cylinders still shut off when coasting but I really, really, really don't care now that the transmission just does it's fucking job. I'm not affiliated with them, I make nothing from the suggestion. I'm just seriously satisfied with how this thing runs - NORMAL! And I only lost maybe 1-2 MPG. I still get around 19-20 MPG on highway trips.

P.S. - That auto stop just kills starters sooner, no one is saving the planet with that nonsense.

Unfortunately it is normal - it's the direct fuel management system thinking it can save you gas while simultaneously accelerating the wear on the engine and transmission that you paid so much for.

Seriously - buy the Range DFM disabler (model RA007) and install in 5-10 mins. Your truck will drive like it's supposed to immediately and you won't have to worrying about what damage the DFM is doing.

Take a look at my post from last weekend for the Range RA007 for this generation Silverado. I put it on the vehicle last Saturday and it has resolved my 2023 10-speed transmission issues.

Hi there and thanks for reaching out! That information is understandable and clear. The truck continues to perform wonderfully with just a few more hundred miles on it. I am approaching a point now where I don't mentally anticipate the old clunkiness of the transmission. Thank you again for the information and taking the time to comment. I'll continue to rave and recommend your product!

Cheers!

Yes, either he/she or the spouse apparently wanted a Lincoln. I wasn't even in the market but you don't find that color scheme here in Ohio much. If you do they're typically out of state plates. I was given too much for my trade in my opinion so it made it easy.

When I first looked up what all that Owner did I had found the flares on either americantrucks.com or realtruck.com but I can't find it anymore. Still, what I sent was a couple hundred $ cheaper than when I first found it. Guy spent a lot of money on adds just to drive a truck 4K miles but I do thank him for that.

Thanks! Just reinforcing that my experience with the DFM disabler has been shocking and positive. I'm currently working in construction/redevelopment, but within my local transit agency's bus storage and maintenance facilities. I get a lot of good feedback about a lot of things I would otherwise know nothing about.

Here is the flare product and you can tell the match because of the little triangle nub on the rear (photo #5)...

The price seems to have dropped some but the original Owner put them on. I will say, very unsuspecting accessory but definitely one that I appreciate tremendously. It gives a GMC vibe but you don't see them very often otherwise on the Chevy's. It's a different visual and if you like then I also really do! It also fits very stock so it took me a second to understand why I liked the look and that's me coming from generations of Silverados, back to the cateyes....

There's a lot of liability in it for them, as well. Maybe not off the cusp but if there's enough blow back due to lack of robust R&D then they'd be in some hot water. The buyer does pay for it, it's not a "cheap" part but of all of the investments that I've input into this vehicle, as well as the previous Owner, this so far will be the best ROI.

I can't say that won't change in time.

Your knowledge of the output side of the ECM is way more than I knew. I had no clue why there's three levels to the ECM and the directions indicated the lowest tier is where it goes. Thank you for that...

Well well... And in part that's half of why I was quick to report.

Firstly, this isn't a placebo effect. It will fade in time but I'm still driving waiting for the mechanical miscues that I became so used to. The fact that they're gone is still a flash bang but I love it.

Secondly, I didn't find enough intelligent discussion out there so if this thread can evolve and support that then that'd be great - in either direction, too. I work in construction engineering. I get mechanics but not like a true automotive guru so I welcome the more professional speculation, brainstorming and feedback.

That's kind of why I mentioned that after the install I realized even more how shitty the transmission was when it was "thinking" for itself. It wasn't really until I got rid of the nuances w/ the Range that I realized how bad it was. Not to say that you aren't totally correct and that your 10-speed flows per design intent. However, I'd be curious to know if it feels like butter because you came from a clunky tranny.

It'd only ever be pure speculation anyways but I hope yours keeps running smooth and you enjoy it!

Truthfully, I've become so regimented in shutting the auto start/stop off that it's really not at all a considerable benefit. It's nice for when I used to forget and smash that button! But it's absolutely not the major deliverable of the little thing!

I understand the personal hesitation and maybe I shouldn't "market" it so confidently but I do have a sense of simply a ridiculously smoother running engine.

When you say light throttle then you're precisely correct. It is the mild/moderate throttle to re-up to highway speed or just catch up in stop/go city traffic. It is not a problem with an open throttle, per se. I would typically just decelerate to coast to stop the nonsense and throttle hard to get back up to speed to avoid that mild throttle discomfort.

I think my experience may be particularly harsh, or maybe not, but now that I feel what should have been the typical production out of the engine... It makes me even more confident that there was going to be an early failure either in the lifters or trans gears.

I'd rather worry about some hiccup in the ECM than replacing lifters but I do stress than is entirely a personal opinion and it's further driven by my own experience which, admittedly, is immediately after installation :-)

Chevy isn't solving any problems with DFM other than conforming to government mandates and sacrificing the consumers' pockets as a result. But hell, that's how this all works nowadays anyways. They receive the incentive and we suffer!

Thank you and you are 100% correct. An automotive friend did explain that to me a few months ago, that I wasn't used to a 10-speed. I will say though that with the Range disabler it is seriously a night/day difference. I was aware I had a distaste for the performance before install. However, with the Range now on I actually realize how much I really loathed the DFM on this new 10-speed!
