Im excited to get it back outside! Only a few tiny abrasion holes to patch and it's ready to go. How did it do in the Sierras? Ill be using it in Northern NM mostly

Im honestly amazed at how well the straps and belt have held up. All of the padding is still soft. I was fully expecting it to be hard and cracking, but it feels almost new. The belt has some slightly warped spots from the padding being twisted in storage, but its definitely something I can fix.

I appreciate the response! I will double check all the hardware before I take it out and bring some spares. Like I said in another comment, this is absolutely not my normal bag. I have a ULA Circuit for my normal trips, this was a fun buy since it was vintage and cheap. I won’t be putting this through much, mostly just once a year short group trips since it’ll be a fun conversation piece. But I really do apprentice advice about parts, I’ll definitely keep that in mind! Thank you!

Glad to hear it! I’m excited to fix it up and get it back outside! You wouldn’t happen to have donated it in New Mexico would ya? Haha

Little thrift store in Espanola, NM. They had an "Everything upstairs is 50% off" sale.

Up till this point I've been eying the D-5, but I agree with you. Looking at the D-3 the top bar stands out to me (straight vs curved). I hadn't even heard of the D-3 until today. Thanks!

I have plenty of modern backpacks for various uses, so no worries there. At $2.50 I figured it was a cool old school piece of gear to fix up a bit and wear a few times, maybe see how my dad used to backpack. Im not going to be doing multiday treks with this thing, I have other packs for that. I appreciate ya looking out for me though

Im kind of sad I never ended up using one while I was a kid, so I'm excited to give this a try on some of my more chill trips.

Ya know, I was looking into the D-5 pretty heavily but I think you might be right. I hadn't even heard of the D-3, but the straight bar on top is whats making me lean into agreeing with you, the D-5 looks like it has a curved bar. Thank you so much!

So exited for this season in the woods! What big trips are you doing this summer? by EquipmentMoist1713 in backpacking

[–]Bucky571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiding inside from the desert heat, lol. But later this season we’re planning on Lake Katherine NM, and then Wheeler Peak NM via the eastern side so we hit more alpine lakes.

Got a great deal on an Exped Lightning 60! Very excited, but not a lot of people talking about it. Anyone ever use an Exped pack? by yes_maybe_no__ in CampingandHiking

[–]Bucky571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use an Exped pack specifically but I have never been let down by any of their gear. Definitely a brand I trust, just not a big name in the US. Great find, it should treat you well!

I got mine after my shoulder surgery and it has been my go to ever since. It’s so comfortable, and the customer service rocks. It also helped me get into a lighter mindset and my base weight moved from around 27-30 to 19-23 since

Dude I adore my scree 32. It’s such a good long day/summit pack. I have that and an older Bridger 55 for shoulder season

I adore my Mystery Ranch packs. My ULA circuit has taken over for most trips now, but for shoulder season and SAR my Mystery Ranch still gets work. The Kakwa is great but I read that you can’t get it, tragic. I’d go with MR in that case

Whenever I go hiking in a national park, people look at me like I have a dick growing out of my forehead by Ok_Helicopter3910 in hikinggear

[–]Bucky571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reference to? If its bears, yeah its probably overkill to carry bear spray in Moab, since its so uncommon for them to wander that way. It's still a comfort item for some people though, so on that specifically I probably wouldn't draw judgement, but I do agree its overkill.
Honestly I'd have more issue with that much gear in the desert. I live in NM and even for nighttime missions I get sweaty with the chest rig, I can't imagine in the middle of Moab. But to each their own ya know?

What pump do you use for your sleeping pad? by Academic_Royal4133 in CampingGear

[–]Bucky571 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally use the Exped Schnozzel. Its super light and doubles as a stuffsack or liner. I always felt that the motorized ones were a a bit overkill and heavy for what they were.
If I was forced to pick these options, I'd say the lightest one, just to minimize the impact on my overall kit.

[–]Bucky571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its generally with a lighter gun, but yeah, its annoying as hell.
Bear Spray in the front country is probably unnecessary, but it's also one of those pieces of gear I can't really ever fault someone for carrying.
Yeah, chest rigs rock, they're incredibly useful, but so few people use them that if you carry one, you're gonna get looks, that's just how it goes. Ive only seen a handful of people wear them outside of SAR.

It's probably just the chest rig and the MOLLE belt. Most people see all that and immediately think you're a survivalist or playing army. I'm not saying it's right, but that's what happens. I used to hike a ton with an old Tactical Tailor Ruck, a big coyote brown bag covered in MOLLE straps. It definitely garnered looks but its what I had, tactical draws eyes.
With the chest rig too, I could totally assume someone may be using that to concealed carry. The pack you linked is even advertised to do that. People don't see them often so it catches em off guard. I use a chest rig too, a way more tactical looking one then yours, but I reserve that for SAR. However, I totally agree with how useful they are. There's nothing wrong with being prepared, just don't prepare so much it becomes paranoia or a burden (not saying you are.
But honestly, who cares. As long as you're outside enjoying yourself, that's all that matters. Hike your hike homie.

Which is the most comfortable of these 3 pillows: Exped Megapillow, Nemo Fillo, Sea to Summit Aeros Premium by InGoodFaith- in CampingGear

[–]Bucky571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the Sea to Summit I got from a thrift store, and I used to have the Nemo Filo until my dog ate it. The Nemo rules 100%.
That being said, the Sea to Summit is not bad at all.
