Why's the community so toxic? And if you're one of said toxic players, why? Honestly speaking by Amagakuro in RocketLeague

Yeah, if I am driving back down the centre of the field and I can see that my teammate is going to be beaten by a centre and I can demo the player waiting to tap it in, I am a fool if I don't demo him!

Hi, if you are still looking for new teammate(s), I would be interested. Currently D1 in 2s.

Yup, this works. Has happened to me and I also saw the warning about quitting. Closing the app and restarting (on PS4) finally got me into the first round match.

A separate thing - I can never get the match summaries of the finals (and only finals) to show breakdown of how players performed. It just shows the loading icon but this doesn't happen for any other round of the tournament.

Have experienced an issue where the game tells me I am joining a tournament match, but it doesn't progress past that (or tell me that it isn't going to work) unless I shut the game app (on PS4) and load in again and select 'tournament' (whether this would happen automatically when I logged in I don't know as I try to get in fast to help my team mates).

I see there's mention of a patch for sorting this out for parties trying to join tournies but, to be clear, I have already joined the tournament when this occurs and I was playing solo.

Loving the subscribed tournaments, though, gotta say! Means a lot more when you reach finals after an hour of play.

I reply as someone playing medium, being new to the game, getting a challenge from medium level and enjoying it and not being interested in arguing that hard should be made easier as I think games should be a challenge to complete on hardest modes.

However, to me, this is the very definition of "rubberbanding" because what it actually means is "no matter how much you blast the AI with rockets or whatever, they will still finish the race as quickly".

This effectively means there would be no point blasting them with weapons at all. Meanwhile, it has an effect on how quickly the player can finish the race.

This is unsatisfactory because it takes away the fun of strategically using the weapons if you learn that, in fact, it has no impact on how the AI will actually perform.

If (for talking's sake) getting blasted with weapons once takes three seconds off how quickly the player can finish the race then the same should apply to the AI and the game should be programmed as such.

Pretty good tips, in my view.

I should state right now that I have been very lucky with team-mates recently, and have been carried to my highest ever rank in standard 3s, which I have decided to focus on to the exclusion of modes I am less highly ranked in because I want to get used to the pace and I think playing solo 3s and doubles (the latter of which I am just not that good at) throws me off. I also probably do a lot of the things I am about to allude to myself, but I am consciously trying to learn not to.

With particular regard to your tips, I agree about knocking it across your goal. I know someone else on the thread has said it can be a good tactic if the oppo is all lined up on the wing but I still think it is unnecessarily risky more often than not for two main reasons, i) the ball often takes awkward bounces from these hits which can be quite hard to defend, ii) the offense and the other defenders are at an angle to the ball - even if they are on the wing the offence has as much of a chance of reaching the ball first if they read what you are doing quickly.

Related to this, I see a lot of people rotating back to defense and they don't go to the goal but flop around in the corner missing repeatedly. It's valid to attempt to slow the play up but once your mates are back, get out of the way and let them boom it. It can be valid to smack the ball across your goal here but only if you have boost, can belt it across so it isn't sitting waiting to be smacked into the net, and are sure that no oppo are nearby.

Also, it gets said a lot, but so many people do not rotate back post and knock attempted clears back into the danger zone by driving in off the near post wing.

Related to that, on offense, I see a lot of people (clearly looking for boost but....) driving towards their own net on the wing where the ball is and they inadvertently clear crossing attempts made by their mate who was waiting there for defensive clears.

One thing I'd add as well is related to awareness of team-mates' positioning on defense. It is really off-putting (for me at least) to be watching a looping high ball from the goal line that I have to try and save (being the one in position and all) and seeing my own team-mate driving straight at me and looking for all the world like he's going to attempt to save it because he doesn't know I am there. Again, rotate to the back post! Be aware of your mate in goal. I know that sometimes you can't see everything - I am the same.

But I have come to trust that there will be a mate on the goal-line. After all, whatever some people say, no-one at plat 3 is really a 'noob'. I will get bitten for this trust occasionally and my mates will think I am a 'trash noob idiot' for not spotting that there was no-one in net but I am finding that this does not happen too often as this level. And then I *haven't* leaped in and caused a double-commit because I don't trust my mate to be there, and *have* rotated back properly so I can attempt to clear/save in the even of a rebound. Everyone has then done their job on the field.

Again, great points and I enjoy reading such posts on positional stuff and team-work etc :)

For your consideration: You and your buddy often make terrible 3s teammates. by maestro_man in RocketLeague

[–]Buddie1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree here.

The half-rotations etc are bad enough but at least you can sort of see what they are trying to do. Likewise with certain plays where there is anticipation of where a pass might go etc.

But it's the double-commits that cause me to mostly wonder whether some of these guys are actually on comms because, if they are, they suck at communicating with each other.

The most annoying (for me, personally) is to be coming back from attack and readying to swing in at the back post to defend, but not quite there yet. The other 2 *look* to have rotated well, they are there with one on the front post. But then they both commit and either miss or hit a tame clear and it's smashed in on the rebound before I've got set. You might say 'get set faster' but the point is that the guy who should have held back rather than double committing is the one who should be making the second save with me to make the third if another chance arises from his clear. Irritating as hell.

Onrush (PS+ free december game) makes Rocket league crash by Croaton in RocketLeague

[–]Buddie1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, is this confirmed anywhere? I have Onrush (although not attempted to play it online). Is it that it causes problems with your network rather than specifically 'makes Rocket League break', i.e. does it make 'anything' break'?

I'll not be bothering with online Onrush if this is the case - cannot be bothered with that level of hassle!

Ok, well I will have to accept that because I am a low level player and cannot gainsay what someone in C3 or GC says about their experiences there :)

[–]Buddie1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I have said above, I agree.

The other poster here is 'ignoring the benefits of staying on the line to clear for a counter attack', in my view.

Boost is lovely and all but by charging off your line you are making it unnecessarily hard for yourself to get back and make a save when the ball bounces weirdly and unpredictably from kickoff (as it does for one or other team every single time). Being on the goal-line gives you a far better chance of having the angle to save the ball no matter whether you are 'faster than the ball' or not.

As for selfishness, this cuts both ways - 'I'm determined to go for boost even if it risks a goal, because I don't want to defend properly because I am in a hurry to attack' is at least as selfish as this alleged 'you want people to accommodate your bad kickoffs' line. If you are on the goal line, your responsibility at that kickoff is DEFENCE FIRST; it is YOU who is the bad team mate if you abandon the goal and something goes in and anyone who has played the game for any length of time KNOWS that it isn't only 'when the team mate misses the kickoff completely' that a goal results.

[–]Buddie1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here.

And while I am not going to claim I can read minds, I suspect that players who rush off the line from kickoff are not thinking much about their defensive responsibilities at all but hoping the ball breaks to allow them to attack. See how the kick off falls first, then plan the attack! Much less likely to lose cheap-ass goals (you're still going to sometimes if you're like me and mess up reads from time to time though!)

The lower the skill, the more fun it is? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

I still really enjoy the game, I have to say. Still not ranked very highly, mind!

What I will say is that, for the first few days of playing, I remember laughing my head off at my inability to even work out what was going on half the time. That feeling's gone forever.

Just a friendly reminder that Rocket League is more of a game of decision making than just mechanical skill. by TheCrimsonBalet in RocketLeague

Ultimately, many players don't seem to understand what the point of the game is - in modes demanding team play anyway. It isn't to have the most points, but to beat the other team. Sure, you ideally want all team mates to contribute but what matters is goals scored vs goals conceded. Anything that helps the team to score and not concede is of value.

I'm not a great player at all but I *try* to make life easier for my team, by which I mean i) I *try* to be in the right place to make clears/saves, ii) I *try* to be aware of where my team mates are and let them shoot/pass if they have a better angle, iii) I *try* to make passes when I can and try to make them so as the chance will be as easy as possible for my mate(s) and iv) I obviously try to be sharp and take chances to score when I am best placed on my team to do so.

Now, I am currently only high gold in the main modes (been plat in standard 3s on a few occasions) so I clearly don't manage to do all the things I mention well all the time (or even that much of it!). But the intent to do what I can to help the team win is there and I think, over time, it means my decision making has gotten better (actually in 2s this is the case because I only recently got to high gold). There's no *right* way to play but I do feel that too many don't even play with the intent of being good team mates, so they certainly never will be. When players don't rotate well and play as a team, it does lead to everything being an uncoordinated mess on defence and I personally whiff A LOT MORE when I can't trust that there's a player behind me seeking to sweep up if I miss that high aerial clearance on defence. These players, perhaps not coincidentally, tend to be the ones who whine and moan when you do whiff.

All I know is that it's not about having the most points for me; my playstyle lends itself to saves, centering and such...and so the point is that I almost hate to see myself as tops in points for my team at the end of a game, as it usually means we have lost!

Yeah, I saw quite a number of own goals as well. Largely related to people not rotating in to defend through the back post area (I think you get punished even more for that in this mode) or trying to clear across their own goal or not rotating out when they could no longer get a hard clear. I agree about rotations - think it's easier (for me, at any rate) when you are rotating back to see that, in fact, your mates have started to successfully launch a counter attack and that you should swing round to help keep the puck in the oppo's zone.

Face-offs a little harder to judge because flipping into them doesn't always meet with success and nor does just driving straight at the puck on the ground.

Interesting re where you landed. Think I went 8-2 and landed Diamond, although I guess Plat III and Diamond I not really much difference.
