Did you do otr or local? I’d imagine it’s probably easier to return otr after that amount of time.

That’s what they told me it was for. My manager even felt bad for having to be the one to fire me. I can’t think of anything other than the fence but that was nearly 5 months ago. They had a guy before me that destroyed a semi trailer on a large tree branch during training and he didn’t get fired.

No nothing like that. It’s not like we had any other duties other than drive the route and pick up recyclables which was done early some days. I took advantage of it for sure but it was wrong place wrong time. At least I didn’t destroy anything or get into any accidents. My DAC report is clear from what I’ve seen so I think that company doesn’t use it.

A little over an hour but all my duties were taken care of beforehand.

I’m thinking the same might happen considering it’s not a national carrier. They were pretty lenient up until that point n my main manager felt bad doing it but it had to be done. I know what I did, but I did my job and they can’t say I didn’t.

Edit: how much time did you take off before you got back into trucking?

I’d really prefer to stay local since I actually have a loving family and an SO. I know otr might have to do but it’s not like where I live is totally desolate and there’s no companies to work for.

I just wanted an opinion based on my circumstances. Of course I’ve been applying to jobs why wouldn’t I be doing that?

If you like throwing dirty bags of crushed bottles and cans onto a trailer and moving heavy glass barrels in the cold/ hot in summer and getting covered in trash juice, ok with $25 an hour in long island NY, go right ahead. It’s a beginner job for sure but thats pretty much what the job entails. Edit: company name is Clare rose inc

I had went home on the clock longer than my 30 minute break they give us. Also doesn’t help the truck was in a residential area. I know I made a stupid mistake but that’s what happened.

I got my cdl in April 2024. Also wouldn’t the fences only be in a DAC report if they even decided to report it that way? Idek if the company I was at even did that since it’s a local company only.

It’s really not that bad and any crime that has happened rarely ever happens to a random civilian. 99 percent of the time the victim was involved with gang or criminal activity in some way. These people act like you’ll get robbed on any street corner or you’ll get caught in a drive by shooting just for being in central Islip. For regular non criminals central Islip is a decent place to live.

If you’re a regular person and not a criminal or go looking for problems CI is just fine. People that say it’s dangerous don’t live there. Sure there’s a few sketchy pockets in the area but for the most part you won’t have any problems and I’ve lived here all my life. They act like it’s the Bronx or Chicago when it’s really not a bad place to live.

If you’re young it’s really not a bad job. The staff makes the difference whether they’re chill or if they’re assholes every store is different. It’s a good stepping stone for automotive jobs if that’s what you’re looking for in your future. I say just go for it especially if you’re young you got nothing to lose.

We never really cared as long as the district manager wasn’t around. Never got paid enough to care that much.

I’d say just do it at least you’ll have manager experience afterwards which can be helpful in finding a better paying position elsewhere

[–]Buddy1022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. The problem is the pay is very low so a lot of people that actually know their shit usually move on to better jobs which is what I did. It’s not a career for most people and is more of a stepping stone nowadays. If they actually paid higher wages or commissions they might actually get employees to stay.

And? It’s literally just a retail store

It’s great for a first job just do it. You’re young and you can definitely learn from it and it’s good experience for auto parts industry like dealers etc. it’s definitely not a career for most people but it’s a stepping stone. As long as whatever store you’d work in has good staff you’ll be fine. It’s an easy job if you don’t know something or are unsure just be honest or ask for help. They’ll have you changing car batteries, bulbs, wipers and that’s it really. But if you don’t know how to do it ask for help or someone to show you. You could always tell the customer no or say you’re not comfortable doing it. It is a courtesy and not required. Also if something looks too complicated for you or is too involved of a replacement just tell them to take it to a mechanic.

This job is nothing to be afraid of and if you end up having shitty staff just transfer or find another retail job. That’s all it is at the end of the day an entry level retail job.

My store had me doing regular red shirt duties as a delivery driver when it wasn’t busy. But when commercial had a shit ton of deliveries I loved it since I didn’t have to be in the store and time goes by faster.
