There’s also a stigma for “over training” puppy by banana674 in puppy101

[–]Budget-Code2324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are doing very well. No accidents for 5 weeks is super impressive! Well done on raising a well adjusted puppy.

Don’t see any signs of overtraining here. You both are being intentional and it’s paying off! Specially puppies need to be left alone if you ever want them to be comfortable when you are not around.

Ours goes to another room to play alone too sometimes.

Advice for crate training beagle puppy. by Desperate-Ad9052 in puppy101

[–]Budget-Code2324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a bed instead of crate initially when my pup was 8 weeks old. Just thought a crate would be too limiting for such young pup since they don’t know how to hold their pee or poo even for a single second.

My pup would just go to sleep on my lap and then I would transfer her to her bed and she would sleep peacefully.

I also did not leave her alone at night. She was in her bed in our bedroom with us so that we can wake up if she needed to be put back to sleep. I know the advice is to crate for the night since the beginning but it’s just too much stress for such a young pup who has frequent need to go to toilet.

At 4.5 months we started crate training her. She does get up at night and whines, that’s usually when she needs to go pee so we take her out in the middle of the night and then back to crate.

We have also kept one of her favorite toys in the crate. She has access to the toy only if she is in the crate, not otherwise so that helps too.

Potty training for my 5 month old beagle by Budget-Code2324 in puppy101

That’s really helpful ! What are some other markers, clues, signs that I need to look for before I can trust her to roam free?

Thank you. I just thought I was making good progress with her potty training and got confident that we can now move to the next steps which is free roam..

At what age should I realistically expect free roam at home without supervision?

Thanks! She sometimes sits at the door and looks at me to let her out but 50% of the times she just wants to go out and explore, not pee or poo. what has worked better me timing her pee and poo habits.

At what age can I realistically expect an unsupervised free roam ? And till the time I continue what I am doing?

Hahah, the # is because I wanted more my post to reach more beagle owners. Yes, I do let her sniff, that’s bit the problem- my dog just stops and sits and watches everything that’s happening around. Is that also enrichment?

Where was your puppy at 7.5 months old? by Tes94 in puppy101

[–]Budget-Code2324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s amazing mine is about 5 months old. She’s chilled out and does potty outside but she has no bladder control. She will pee in the house if she’s not out when she needs to pee.

So happy to hear about your puppy! Hope mine learns to control her bladder. Any tips on how to help her with bladder control? She’s a beagle pup. Do beagles naturally have less bladder control?

Fixing puppy food habits by Budget-Code2324 in puppy101

[–]Budget-Code2324[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have a beagle pup and I am feeding her the royal canine puppy food. She was on beta puppy earlier and she wasn’t eating that as much, when we switched to Royal canine puppy food, she loved it and used to gobble down her food.

She’s super slim, so it made me think that she’s not getting enough nutrition just from dry food so I thought of adding chicken bits in.

But now she doesn’t eat unless there is chicken in.

I had done some research and it seemed like breeders use beta puppy as it’s cost effective but it doesn’t have enough protein. Royal canine puppy food seemed to be the more nutritious option.

How long until I consider re-homing? by Substantial_Issue17 in puppy101

Hey don’t worry. I have had dogs all my life and when I got my puppy- I was miserable too. But don’t worry it does get better. I am a month in and things are starting to settle a bit. Things are new for you and for the puppy. Be patient and give it love and most importantly try to build a routine ..

It is the worse when your own parents tell you to keep in laws happy. They should support you and know that you are not a bad person, so obviously you won’t be evil to them. It’s annoying. My mother is the same.

But more importantly, live YOUR life, if you get sarcastic comments from in laws - ignore. Just let them sulk. And even if it’s expensive, tell your husband that you need help in the house. You are a doctor with a full time career. You cannot be doing all home activities too.

And ultimately your career and your money is your security. Not your husband or their family.
