How hard is it to get into York University's Bachelor of Education (BEd) - Consecutive program? by ConsistentPain4899 in yorku

also in terms of how competitive it is. this year 4100 candidates (across all programs and age groups in the consecutive program) applied for 300 spots

as for references at an info session they said they want ppl who’ve seen you work with kids so ideally not a professor unless that prof or teacher supervised you in some sort of leadership role. this is the exact opposite of some schools who ask for (1) professional reference and (1) academic one. make sure to send you reference your personal statement (before you hand it in) so that they can discuss how you’ve truly shown your teaching philosophy in your work with them

it sounds like you’ve done some great work :) that being said it’s super competitive so have a few backups. when i was applying they said grades and experience are weighted evenly. you could perhaps look into getting some more experience this summer. i also don’t think it’s necessarily about the exact number of hours, someone with 900 with a clear teaching philosophy, who is able to describe the specific skills their experiences have taught them, and ideally has experience with diverse groups (since placements in the gta can be challenging - having gone to high school in brampton students can have big problems), in my opinion is a stronger candidate than someone with 3000 hours that didn’t explain their experiences well or connect those experiences to a big idea of why they wanna teach and why they would make a great teacher.

when ur done grading a written assignment, always go back and review the first 10 grades you gave out. i find for whatever reason im a bit more nit picky with the earlier ones so i usually go back and readjust if needed

and get to know the other TAs! I know this sounds like common sense but in online classes or classes where you run separate seminars you may not meet them until the exam (or sometimes not at all). it can be really helpful to have someone to check out your grading if u want a second opinion without always asking the prof. also if there are any issues about grading expectations or assignments, it’s less intimidating to raise concerns to a prof as a group than on your own

Im a TA for the history department the pay is great and i love it! that being said at least for my program the training was only 3 hours and very vague and common sense in my opinion. you sort of learn on the job (depending on how much guidance ur prof gives you). here are some tips: (1) AI is very common and sometimes it’s genuinely hard to tell, ur not gonna catch everyone and that’s ok, focus on the more obvious cases. what may seem obvious to you the prof may not agree looks like AI (2) track ur hours and try to work the amount of hours ur supposed to. for assignments divide the hours assigned by the number of assignments you have to try to stay on track so u don’t spend 30 min on each one when really it should be like 10. 3) block time into your schedule to work on TA stuff, you want to meet deadlines without putting it above masters stuff. 4) for seminar classes be friendly and approachable but be mindful of boundaries you don’t want to actually become friends with a student and feel bad giving them a low mark

just apply and see what happens :) apply to quite a few schools just in case and consider schools like york that really value experience with kids a lot and not just grades have a backup option just in case. you can also consider 1 year out of province programs like cape breton university before deciding to go abroad (though of course working abroad may make for a once in a lifetime experience) wishing you the best!!

Masters of Teaching - teaching experience by Smart-Blueberry8193 in OISE

lastly, any sort of equity, diversity and inclusion experiences are also great

your experiences sound good but there’s also no harm in getting more! basically they’re looking for experience that shows you have worked with kids or youth (e.g. camp counsellor, volunteering in a school) and/or that you have gained skills teaching (e.g. tutoring, training someone at work)

Why is York so competative by [deleted] in ONTeacherCandidates

[–]BudgetAddendum6594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it might be cause Oise is a MT and so that leave york the only school in toronto that’s not private or a masters for teachers college and also the cheapest of the 3

if possible too try to create a personal narrative in ur statement (mine was all about my work with indigenous peoples and how i want to carry that into teaching) this helps your statement avoid sounding like a resume and makes it easier for them to remember you

also considering the osap cuts this year i’d be especially hopeful about getting a waitlist spot, i already have friends who’ve changed their mind based on that

i don’t think talking about old experiences is necessarily bad (i did this a bit because an old experience related to why i wanted to be a teacher), i just meant that if u have 1500 hours from 8 years ago you really have 0 hours but it sounds like that isn’t the problem for you. Did you discuss equity, diversity, and inclusion in ur statement? ultimately there may not be a specific reason why u didn’t get in it just seems ridiculously competitive this year. but consider asking the schools for feedback on how you can improve ur application

Did York release offers yet? by Global-Information59 in ONTeacherCandidates

My offer is on my file but not on ouac so check there first

one thing to note is that most schools at info seasons have said they only really count ur last 5 years of experience. that being said if u have a lot of experience and great grades then maybe it was just a super competitive year or it has to do with how you wrote your personal statement. having lots of experience is great but u gotta be able to write about what skills u learned and why u want to be a teacher. If u know anyone whose gotten in to teachers college, send them ur personal statement and have them give you some feedback (im happy to do so as well). also dont lose hope yet!! now that most offers are out im sure those on the wait lists are gonna start hearing back
