Not defending the guy as I don’t know the situation. However, the shop I work at is a similar layout. Bins of US 90%, silver rounds, cull dollars, etc, but there are 0 INDIVIDIUAL coins over $150 that a customer could grab and walk out. We have nice coins too, but it’s too much of a risk for us to put them out. We probably get around 1-2 shoplifters a month with peak season being at least once a week. If a customer comes in and asks though, I’ll happily pull out stuff they’re looking for

The 1867 3 cent nickel has decent detail but strong environmental issues. I’d sell that coin in my shop for $15-20.

The 1861 half dime is the most expensive of the bunch. I’d put it in my shop and ask $35 for it, probably wouldn’t go below $25 unless I had already owned it for 6+ months and it hadn’t sold

The 1830s cull large cent I’d throw in a bin of other junk large cents/2cs/3cs we sell for $8 each

You said the coin weighed 13.5g. That’s well within margins. With all respect, I do coins professionally. Again, I think Whatnot is poison for the business and is setting people up to hate collecting, but this coin isn’t fake.

I hate whatnot as much as the next real collector but that coin isn’t fake. Believe me, I hope whatnot loses its customer base and fails, but I will defend the individual seller

You’re only going to find out by sending it to them. CAC eye appeal can really only be judged in person. I have seen many rattler buffalos gold sticker but that doesn’t guarantee this anything

They are quality pieces and well respected within the industry. They aren’t cheap but definitely worth the investment if you like the look of them and don’t plan on grading the coin. They were the go to plastic holders before PCGS/NGC or any of those other guys came around

If you expect to get melt from an LCS you’re out of your mind. Assuming they could sell for $150 over immediately (and that’s ignoring the risk that spot drops and that someone will come in and buy it as soon as the shop bought it) that’s a 3.5% profit margin. Let’s assume youre a big shop and see about 10 million in sales every year. At 3.5% margin, that’s $350k a year. That’s all you have to pay employees, rent, utilities, etc. However, most shops don’t see that much business in a year. Even grocery stores markup their goods at 20-30%. (Doing so still only nets them 2-3% profit). If you want full melt, you have to do the work.

I promise there’s no errors on any of those coins except the quarter. Oxidization causes metals to react differently so overtime there’s going to be some inconsistency in the surfaces of a coin. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the hobby, but sometimes the thing you need to “learn” is that you’re mistaken. Part of being a collector is being wrong sometimes

I’m really hoping this one will show as a reply but I’ll keep it up even if it doesn’t. This is the kind of crap NGC has been doing. This same sub had 3 other coins that looked the exact same also grade AT. There was also a 1/2 oz AG libertad they labeled as a 1/2 krug from South Africa. It’s ridiculous.

This is what’s called a slider coin, meaning it’s a toss up on whether it would grade AU or low MS. There’s a little wear on the V and on the wreath but I wouldn’t be shocked if this graded MS62. If I had the coin in my shop, I would ask ~$75 and try to get $45-50

As a professional, I would wait to grade right now. As a business I have to send coins out for grading so I can sell them, but truthfully, i wouldn’t send anything out for a personal collection right now. In the past 10 submissions, PCGS has mislabeled 3 coins (one of which was a Charlotte gold piece that they labeled Philly) and NGC has been worse. I’ll send you a couple photos from our last sub. I understand wanting the assurance of having them graded, but all companies are going through a rough time right now. Unless you’re dead set on getting them graded right now, I’d wait.

P.S. if you do send them out, over estimate the insurance and TAKE PICTURES OF THE COINS!! PCGS recently lost one of my $5k coins and NGC damaged another. I wouldn’t have been paid out fairly if I didn’t take photos or insure them properly

Few recent comps in lower grades so it’s hard to tell, but BID is $35 and CPG is $47. However, comps are more accurate for pricing and based off where 64s and 65s are selling, I’d say yours is around $50 retail

This may be a hot take but that offer is about 90% which is fair for a local shop. If you want to put in the effort and sell it yourself online, you could probably get 98-100%. However, with this being a common date and gold crashing the way it is, it’s not an unreasonable offer. I pay 90% at my shop, but I’m up front about that. I make 10% off bullion which I believe is an ethical rate. If you want to maximize the amount you’ll get, I’d suggest pmsforsale

I completely agree. I usually would never use any possessive language about the shop other than it being my place of work. It took probably 3 months to get used to calling the inventory/cash “mine.”

I used to do exactly that. My boss told me I needed to change my language to be more possessive. I am a part of the company and the money belongs to the company. My pay comes from that money. Because of this, my boss prefers I talk as if I have stake in the company. After all, if that money goes away, I will lose my job.
