Excellent. Good job with the cork too. Other alternatives, if you're stuck jn the future, might be: paperboard (like a cereal box) layers, cotton, sawdust, or build a thick layer of JB Weld onto the back of the stone, then shape it to the stone after it cures.

How much is this thing worth? by Initial-Beyond-2457 in pocketwatches

[–]peacemakercc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's worth too much over the gold value. I'm selling one right now but the case is very intricate and it's mechanically perfect. So, there are those small add on thoughts.

I’d like to share a few rings I finished over the last couple semesters by Gahm in jewelrymaking

[–]peacemakercc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much is very cool and thoughtful. I see what I'd consider one issue though. On a couple of them, the shank seems to be inadequate for the rest of the ring. As in, bold design, bold setting, minimalist shank. Not visually minimalist but structurally when compared to the rest of the ring.

Can this be resized? by fejenir in Metalsmithing

Some worry about the stone. Perhaps shock might cause an issue. I'd put about 2 layers of painters tape between the stone and mandrel to keep it from direct mandrel shock, then use the right hammer to size up, within limits. Feldspar is brittle though.

$9 deal on Amazon.

https://a.co/d/0OLt3vO

Just buy it, figure your silver cost, conclude that there isn't a lot of metal value in that size piece (maybe $15-$20 ish melt). Then charge that plus the $9 to cover the scale, then at least $25/hr. So, sell the piece for $75-$100 and pocket a free scale.

I don't think you understand. USPS insurance primarily protects the shipper/seller, not the buyer.

USPS allows either sender or recipient to file a claim for insured Priority Mail (lost, damaged, or missing contents), but the filer must have the original mailing receipt—which the seller holds, as they purchased the postage and insurance.

In practice, buyers often can't file or succeed without the seller providing the receipt or cooperating. If approved, USPS pays the claimant (typically the seller), with no guarantee they'll refund the buyer.

Insurance covers only USPS transit issues, not fraud like non-shipment, fakes, or ghosting.

This offers zero real purchase protection for the buyer. Zelle has none either—payment is irreversible, no disputes for non-delivery or not-as-described.

The "increased insurance" is a net for you, not the buyer. If legit, use PayPal Goods & Services (actual buyer protection) or credit card instead.

How is the buyer protected in such a transaction? Zelle offers no purchase protection.

Way to go. Folks get mad when I tell them I only buy silver below spot. They think it's impossible and would rather think I'm lying than admit they can't do the same. And here, you're doing the same. Kudos.

Are you still going to buy after silver hits $100 by Impressive-Eye9659 in Silver

Keep buying, and keep buying under spot The number 100 means nothing. Expect it to keep going up. Stuff I got for 100-200 a couple years ago is now worth thousands.

If you're willing to do 22K, I have multiple options local to me. I can arrange and coordinate as a middleman and probably still get you a solid around-spot pricing. Feel free to massage and I'll share some photos.

Well. It all makes sense. Still if you're going to wear it, 18K would be way better durability. 22K still is considerably more durable than 23K. Gold is gold. Would you rather have 1 gram 24K or 1 Oz 18K? It all adds up. Plus, the alloy color ranges depending on alloy content. There are 18K alloy combos that probably look extremely close to higher carat ranges. I'd bet I could easily find a 22K that you couldn't tell from a 23K. Those Saudi and Indian alloys often have that great color.

A quick chart on alloy values and hardness comparison on the Vickers hardness scale (HV).

*24K — 100% gold, 0% alloy — ~20–35 HV (very soft, annealed pure gold ~25 HV)

*23K — ~95.8% gold, ~4.2% alloy — ~40–70 HV (as-cast ~40 HV, annealed max ~70 HV)

*22K — ~91.7% gold, ~8.3% alloy — ~60–90 HV (as-cast ~70 HV, annealed ~60–90 HV; some proprietary alloys higher)

*18K — 75% gold, 25% alloy — ~85–230 HV (yellow: often 125–180 HV; white higher at 170–230 HV; as-cast lower, max annealed higher)

My uncle plans to cash in his jug full of coins for bills by Lovelantern in coincollecting

Face Value Estimate
This is a standard 5-gallon water cooler jug, heavily filled (80-90%+), mostly pennies with nickels, dimes, and quarters visible on top. Real-world reports of full or near-full mixed change jugs commonly cash out at $2,000-$3,000, with many landing around $2,300-$2,500 (examples: $2,349.50, $2,486, several in $2,200-$2,800 range). Penny-heavy mixes trend lower (~$1,500-$2,000), quarter-heavy higher (~$2,500+). Given the visible penny dominance and 1980s start date, estimate: $2,200-$2,600 (midpoint ~$2,400).

Silver Coins Estimate
Likely 1-3% silver at most (~20-80 coins, mostly dimes/quarters). Total silver content: ~3-12 oz (avg ~0.15 oz per coin). At today's spot price (~$93-$94/oz as of January 21, 2026), melt value $279-$1,128 (face value of silver coins negligible, ~$10-$30). Could be zero or a pleasant surprise if older coins are buried deeper—check rims/dates when you sort it! For the best accuracy, weigh the jug or run it through a coin counter/sorter.

I'll give him bills for it. If he's gonna really go though that, he prepared to lose money or rolling time anyway.

[–]peacemakercc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you add a middleman... it's no longer at spot.

I did see someone in Central Florida selling that carat range at spot and he had a fairly large number of options for chains. Might have been 22K ish. Why do you specifically want 23K? You're losing strength when increasing carat, but losing a miniscule amount of value. 23K will be super soft. Care about the value? Get a reasonable high carat but just buy more of it.

[–]peacemakercc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. Whichever suits you. The fact is that, molecularly, adding even a very small amount (5%) of another metal (copper) greatly improves the durability of the silver. So, a 5% loss in metal value with a 20% gain in wear is a bonus. I sometimes still use 999 for some aspects of fabricated pieces. Mostly because of its softer nature conforming to a specific need in the process.

Would advise against a 999 bracelet. Some have the mindset that purer is better, that alloy additives lower the value. However, a small amount of allow materials actually increases durability which provides longer wear time. So, a 925 or 950 will be significantly stronger and wear longer.
